IN YOUR FACE, the rain. Wheatley TV spent Saturday at an unprecedented TWO Bassetlaw league fixtures, capturing some delectable club cricket action in the process.
NWLCC 1sts travelled to Derbyshire to take on Killamarsh Juniors CC 1sts (no, they weren't a team of precocious 7-year-olds like you thought) in a rain-hit Champo game before Pecky slogged it back to the Wheatley Oval to see his 2nds teammates battle it out against Sherwood Colliery 1sts in Div 3.
Toing and froing, this way and that, this is half-an-hour-or-so of some delightfully bonkers, 4k club cricket. Oh, and... ROB HUNTER-SHAW GOES BANANAS.

This is excellent stuff. My favourite part is the shot of the scenery and just having the departing bat walk through shot when they're out. Wonderful

Great cricket again, and entertaining to watch. Some great bowling from those two old stalwarts from Sherwood, but then some lovely moon balls, for Mr Hunter-Shaw to clobber. Good idea to return home to film the seconds

I had done a minute-long monologue about how nice the facilities and pitch were at Killamarsh but had to cut it for time considerations! Looks a belting track and the outfield was like baize.

I’ve been lucky enough to play in Wheatley teams with Nick for years. A more laidback, mild-mannered man you’re never likely to meet - but put a bat in his hands and he tears through bowling attacks like Henry VIII eating a roast chicken.

wasn't just the last over the pies were being delivered! that was true absolute village standard with 2 lads who actually could play the game and 9 lads who turned up to make the numbers up lol

Love games like that 2's one, the variety it brings at times actually quite a lot of the time makes for better games than the higher divisions. Think I've played more exciting games when I've dropped down to the 2's over the years than when I played 1's. That left arm spinner in the Sussex replica shirt at the end was a long way from home! Would be interested to know what part of down here he was from and what side he possibly played for.

I still dispute, plumb or not, how an umpire can tick pitch, line and height in a split second, to make a decision.

I know where you’re coming from, Nick. But my mantra is - I would take an honest mistake from a panel umpire over the unavoidable bias of club umpires, which would be the alternative set up.

@@WheatleyTV agreed. I wasn’t thinking bias or anything but fair point and it does happen. I’ve just always been curious on the speed on which lbws are given in general.

Having umpired hundreds of school cricket matches, I can tell you there are those cases when you just immediately know it's LBW. Umpires develop an ability to spot the LBWs sometimes before the appeal, even. I always maintained that, if I had any doubt whatsoever, I'd give the batsman the benefit rather than give him out when he shouldn't be.

@@raytheron I get that, I’ve umpired a hell of a lot too. And absolutely, you get the initial “ooooh, that’s close” in the moment, of course. I just take a couple of seconds to tick the boxes to make sure.

A better ring to it maybe, Matthew, but accurate? There is an anecdote connected to its name but I may not reveal it ‘on air’ - I’ll have to introduce a premium tier of Wheatley membership for that! Also, hadn’t realised that I’d described Rob’s shot in the same clip as a “smear”. How vile.
