West Indies actually was in decline by then but was being masked by the quality of Ambrose and Walsh in bowling and Lara and Chanderpaul with bat. The retirements of Richard's, Marshall, Dujon and Greenidge, all in 1991, with no replacements approaching their quality was the beginning of the end the glory days of WI cricket.
tendulkar only played against a very old ambrose in test cricket in 1997. Ambrose wasn't there for the 1994 tour and tendulkar did not play in the 89 series.
Absolutely right, Ambrose was not 100 % fit, was almost ageing & well past his prime in 1997 when Tendulkar played him. Would have been interesting to see had Tendulkar played him in 1989 on fast & bouncy tracks in WI.
