Used to leave in Ivy road from 1973 to 1978. Studied at John Kelly Boys High School. I remember Gladstone Park and the Library right near the entrance to the Park. Had a Lovely adolescent time in those days.
My mum was from Cricklewood from 1933-47 as well, so I have some roots here myself. I always like going to Gladstone Park which is 10 minutes away from where I live now.
I lived in Cricklewood with my parents and older sister until I was eight years old although very young I have great memories of my time there god be with the days
This brings back wonderful memories! As a child, I lived at 21 St. Gabriels Rd from 1948 until 1957. I'm not sure how old you are, but do you remember they used to display huge colourful old (steam?) tractors in front of the 'Crown' pub at Cricklewood Broadway? And there was a delicatessen down the street called 'Greens'. Every Saturday morning I would walk all the way up St. Gabriel's Rd, down Exeter Parade, (passing Dick's Car Sales), and then all the way down Kilburn High Rd, (passing the 'State' cinema, which I'm not sure is still there) as far as 'Raymond Way', the secondhand car showroom where Raymond Way was famous for saying, 'Have a cigar!". Being a kid, I remember the cinemas. On the other side of the road from the 'State', down a little way, was the 'Grange', at the end of Kilburn High Road was the 'Essoldo', and back at Cricklewood Broadway was the 'Gaumont'. Not a bad memory for a 69 year old, eh? Thanks for posting!
talladale Great memories, my mother and her family lived off the Broadway till 1947 so left just before you arrived, and we went to Leven's greengrocers there in the 60s. Compared to many places it hasn't changed that much besides the shops and the new hotel which only just arrived.
Love Cricklewood, now living in Brazil but I still have my little flat on Mora Rd, the area is getting a 4billion pound makeover as part of the Brent Cross redevelopment.
Just remembered more personal trivia. The first school I went to was Child's Hill School, a big old Victorian place if I remember rightly, and then to Anson Rd Primary School, the year it opened, I think. Then, after I passed my Eleven Plus exams (goodness knows how) I went to Quintin Grammar School in St. John's Wood, where I certainly didn't distinguish myself!
My Dad stayed in Cricklewood, Hendon, drank in the Crown and Galtee Mór. He was in the Irish army and gave 6 months in the Congo as an UN peacekeeper. He did his time in the army and then off to London after that. He gave the 60s working here. Came home to Templemore Tipperary in 69 and met my mother. He's still in Templemore at 81 years and talks fondly of his time there. I asked him was he called Paddy over there, he said we were all Paddy but didn't give a shit once they got paid. His name is actually Andy. People didn't take offense then like now.
They've been talking about doing up the entire area from there to West Hendon for over 20 years, we're still waiting! My mum was born there and lived off the Broadway till she was 14.
Thank you! Apart from filming people I know I couldn't think of anything better than recording where I live. There are many hours on VHS once I can work out the kit to get it on DVD as well.
@paulvernon100 Always nice when expats see their old places on my streams. One ex neighbour (long before I was here) saw his road and returned to visit from Australia. My mother was born in Cricklewood and left just before you were there. I've known it all my life, we used to go to Leven's greengrocers in the 60s as that was the one she used back then if you rememer them.
A good idea but a missed opportunity.. Too much noise from the traffic. Could have been shot early on a Sunday morning.. or with this video shut off sound put some music maybe Irish on the soundtrack..
The sound is a bugger. Unfortunately the cameras (I've used a few) have no mic socket, meaning the built in mic picks up the loudest noises and they are inevitably the traffic. The alternative, which is beyond me, is to add the speech later and fade the noise out, which can still be done given the right training and equipment.
