On September 21, 2022, 7 months after the start of Russia’s invasion into Ukraine, a mobilization was announced in Russia. In the annexed region of Crimea, the Crimean Tatar population started receiving draft notices. The vast majority of them are Ukrainian citizens who were forced to also obtain Russian citizenship following the events of 2014. Most of the draft aged Crimean Tatar men have opted to leave Crimea to avoid the mobilization. In some cases, whole families would depart the peninsula. The Crimean Tatars have dubbed this flight a self-deportation, similar to the Crimean Tatar deportation of 1944.
