It's because they're shallow and only care about aesthetics and appearance. They look what the thing LOOKS like. Or whether said thing makes THEM look or seem better.

It's a narcissism thing. These tourists didn't excel in their normie circles so in their arrogance they try to be the big fish in the small pond by pretending to be into nerdy culture, without really understanding or caring for it, and gain clout like that.

I've spent twenty minutes of my entire life ever playing any Touhous, yet I own two Fumos. I'm mad I missed out on getting a Shumo. I hope Shondo becomes president soon so I can get a Shumo, perhaps one in every room.
The character is Aoi Mukou from Kimi to Kanojo to Kanojo no Koi. Although, having read the synopsis of the VN I can't really tell why people would find the character or the work "problematic."

I thought at first when she said "the game" she meant being an e-girl or something like that and she was alluding to something about the business, but she just meant people liked a certain drawing so they made it their thing and it turns out the source was a weird doujin or a cancelled artist or whatever. I guess if it really bothers you then you could change the design slightly, but I think everyone understands that you just like the design.
