As someone from Houston, it's crazy to think that the Crip's influence defused so far from Los Angeles (thats where I believe they originate but I'm not an expert so please correct me if I'm from). I knew about it from people like Maxo Kream with the 52 hoovers and being from Acres Homes, I've even seen them pass by although they mainly are in the Alief / southwest area. As someone from these environments, I could never understand why someone from the outside would even want a lifestyle where survival consistent of constantly being close to death/ incarceration at every waking moment. If you live a comfortable life afforded to you by your luck of being born into it, please do not take it for granted. I am not a gang banger or anything but I come from the same places and can tell you that even when you're trying to do your best, it's still very hard to make it out of these places and you can become a target for just looking "too well off" when you're only a little bit less poor than they are lol. Houston was not as bad with the gang culture back then, you many had small clicks that wanted to make money. Not that there wasn't gangs it just wasn't as bad as now. The only gangs I really saw were Mexican. You had Houstone, Mexican Mafia, and then came MS13. But in the Black community they were all about making money and breaking bread. But after hurricane Katrina when all the people from New Orleans moved there, there became more violence and actual gangs.
I grew up in dirty ass Pasadena and the amount of middle school/HS kids desperately wanting to be gang bangers and claiming to be from 3rd ward 5th ward sunny side all that shit (most of who I went to elementary school with) blew my mind. The area wasn’t good but it wasn’t the hood either but all these kids wanted to be thug so bad they made up their entire life stories and eventually some actually did start putting in work to hold up the image.
