One went to the highest of Admin,. & exclaimed what' was the hard part of the job, cos they used lots of dru-gs, farm- a,,it wasn't helping. Good friends son, worked there for 25 yrs, he ended his life from seeing too much tradegy..

I live and am impacted by this problem near Johnson Creek in Portland. The creek is full of wildlife and trash everywhere a camper sets up. I've been slapped, pushed and verbally assaulted when I try to get a trespasser out of my garbage or recycling. Sadly, these incidents drain any compassion I once had out of me. I just returned from Philly. One kid lives near Kensington. It is so horrific there, I pray our civic leaders get a grip on the drug problem, before Tranq gets established here. May God have mercy on Portland.

Do you know how expensive it is to escape homelessness? STORAGE is the biggest obstacle to finding employment. Can't just leave my important document and belongings unguarded for eight hours.. Sleep deprived doesn't help. Kicking them out of the shelter at 5 am isn't an incentive to find work. Nowhere to be during the day and no ready access to showers and basic daily amenities makes us unable to be presentable for employment. You don't know the first thing about being homeless.

During the Depression the situation was far worse than today, people were literally starving and yet, there was a sense of shame, no one wanted to admit they were homeless or out of work. And illicit drugs weren’t ramped because no one could afford things like cocaine or opium. Today bums wear the homeless label almost with pride. It’s disgusting. There’s help everywhere, yet still panhandle for cash to buy booze or drugs. America has drastically changed for the worse.

Growing up, everyday we would be at the river trying to catch a fish to ensure we would eat that day,dad found work were he could.The person your commenting against is right . Through will power and determination we escaped that life. You get out of this life what you put into it. If you don't make the decision to leave that life you never will.✝️✡️✝️✡️

I lived in northwest Portland in 1983-84 I had a view of the Freemont bridge and Mt St hellens . I put my ex wife thru grad school. I worked at evergreen stage l I best and got to drive a bus all over the pacific northwest. I loved being there and it was quiet and serene . I guess the times have changed and appear to be getting worse thanks to the treasonous government in place now. If your happy the way things are... vote for obiden . If you want things better again... vote Trump 2024 You're either part of the problem or part of the solution !

Did you look at the charts? Even Fox couldn't make it look any different under Trump than under Biden. Who is the party that votes down programs to help these people and vote to cut every program that does exist to help the homeless? Never seen that party vote to cut subsidies to big buissness, or not to cut company taxes because we need that money for homeless, mental health or drug rehabilitation programs or against creating new tax loopholes for the rich like last time they had a President and made private jets and luxury yachts tax deductible.

I said for decades Republ8cans have blocked everything that would help and everytime they get the chance they cut programs that do help. The closing of mental institutions began under Reagan and has continued ever since. But I don't think the dems have done a great deal themselves, other than for veterans about with stuff like Biden's PACT act.

One of my best friends was born and raised in Salem OR. He backpacked cross country and picked up odd jobs. He did just as many drugs as these people but he found God and cleaned his act up. If he can do it I imagine these folks can as well.

No, Jesus. Trump is just another human with flaws like you and myself. This country needs to go back to our origins. This nation has seen many scholars that proclaimed the Good-news of Jesus Christ. We think that we are progressive, we are actually "down-gressive". Isaac Newton wrote more regarding the teaching of the Judeo-Christian bible and he was super smart, probably an IQ of about 200. Not saying the you need to be smart to be someone, I'm saying that the theory of evolution could not fool Newton if he was born in our time. My father was a drug dealer, drug user, former prison inmate, wife/child beater. Somehow I've never used drugs and at 55 years old, still haven't even tasted alcohol. I made the decision early to never try anything. You don't try it, you can't like it! I feel sorry for SOME of these people, but EVERYONE makes their own decisions and responsible for their OWN actions. End of story.

Portland is #2 in homelessness and we know what city get's the award for being #1 !My friends wanted to send their twins to PSU they came for a visit despite my warning . They had a couple mentally ill people screaming at them, while shopping downtown .Shocked by the homelessness, tents garbage graffiti They checked out of their hotel early and left .

I want this problem to get better but it really pisses me off when I see homeless people turn their camps into literal landfills of garbage. The trash accumulated is disgusting. You can't tell me that they don't have access to a place to throw away garbage because they spend half their time digging through dumpsters and trash cans.

When mental illnesses and extreme drug abuse is involved, you think people have the presence of mind to think about sanitation? Why do you think they're out there in the first place? It's not because they function swimmingly in society. There was funding for shelters, rehab beds, and mental health beds built into cannabis taxation in Oregon but I don't see where ANY of it went. My heart goes out to these people who live out there but look at the garbage that they acquire. They don't even have the common decency to clean up after themselves. Put metal in bins like bike frames and stuff and taking recycle it. Throw the garbage into bins or fire drums so it can be burned. No they just throw it wherever the hell they want. That's what upsets the public. It's not that you're homeless. It's that you leave behind chaos.

God bless you. Growing up most of the homeless were in State hospitals because of PTSD, drugs, illness. Not sure why the program was discontinued. They were in a shelter and fed. Stopping this created a bigger problem.

Oregon like many other states considered having people in mental institutions inhumane so the funding was cut without any options available. The Oregon Republican Senate fought and voted against it but were out numbered by the Democratic Senate and has been for the last 38+ years.

It was a combination of things but a large part of it was the hospitals were poorly managed with abuse and neglect running rampant. Add to that the SJWs of the time decided it violated the rights of people unable to care for themselves and make good life decisions because they had mental illness were being violated if forced into treatment. Just like today many homeless are in need of mental health care but the elites (aka college educated leftist) figure if a delusional paranoid person says they don't want care it's more humane to allow them to freeze, starve and sleep in filth then force them into care. Just like addicts, of course they are going to refuse care if they can get drugs and use them at will because there are no consequences other than their deteriorating health. The only thing they can think about is keeping high enough to not be sick. Yes it is an illness but when one is in the depth of addiction they are unable to make healthy choices. Neither the mentally ill or the addicted are bad people they just can't make good decisions without intervention for a while.

Regan started deregulation and defending of these institutions and programs. It continued during subsequent administrations. Dammasch State Mental Hospital in Wilsonville, OR was shut down in the '90s. The worst cases were sent to the state hospital in Salem. The rest were simply let go. The vast majority ended up off of their meds, on the street. They didn't have the capacity for self care. That's why they were locked up in the first place. When something is wrong, you can usually find the source by following the money.

creating toxic landfills, polluting the air and water, I went through homelessness myself and my main priority was to keep as clean as possible so when I showed up for my $4.25 hour job didn't offend co-workers or customers; was too ashamed to let them know I lived out of my vehicle. Anyone can fall under bad circumstances; you don't have to live like a fn pig. I was in Charlotte NC not long ago and my entire visit I only saw a couple of homeless people. Out here they are everywhere. I used to feel sorry for them until they burned down the place I worked on the hottest day of the year because they were so high they did not even know it was warm out. They built a fire right up against the building. Being a drug addict is a choice. Homelessness may not be, but stealing to feed a drug habit is and they know it. Life can suck….. but if you at least try it doesn’t have to. If you are resourceful enough to feed a drug habit you are smart enough to get your life in order. Try.

Unfortunately, this is not a money issue. Democrats often use this issue to demand more and more money for programs to “help” the homeless, but you CANNOT help someone who doesn’t want to be helped (either because of mental health issues or because of addiction). It will take government forcefully taking these people away from their source of drugs and enforced mental institutions to change this, but to democrats, this is “cruel.” What is cruel, is to leave them in their current condition.

Didnt happen overnight, 2 karens also helped me there names were both karen. Born and raised in Oregon here. From the Portland area, now in Southern Oregon. My daughter works in mental health, and Southern Oregon has got to be the worst place in helping the situation. They do not want to build facilities where facilities are needed they just want the homeless to go away. It is the non-profit organizations and the Christians who are helping them at this moment. Whether that's bringing food or clothes or bedding, or whatever accessories they are in need of. It would be by far worse without the help of these wonderful people.

@weirdshibainu governor Kotek received a 25 million grant to disperse to bigger cities in Oregon, and Southern Oregon said no, we don't want the homeless here at all, so why would we build housing for them? Portland, however, is doing wonderful things with their Grant. My daughter helped start a program on Burnside assisting the homeless, getting them off the streets, and into safe housing. It's going to take a while to see the difference being made, but so far, so good.

When the cops let bad landlord threaten, injure, harm and steal from paying tenants, even disabled, elderly paying tenants... well then, NO ONE is safe. As the same harm the cops let be done to them can infact be done to you and your family as well , and it wont be a crime either. You can be homeless and hurt and laugh at yourselves.
