Hi James. Great stream last night and certainly an exciting November lineup. I've emailed Criterion asking if they would consider creating a 4K "trade-up" program for existing Blu-ray owners (keep the package but, for a reasonable fee, just swap out the old Blu-ray disc for the UHD). With only a couple of exceptions, every 4K release of an existing title has kept the same supplements and packaging, and this has discouraged a lot of people from upgrading. I'll let you know if/how they respond to the suggestion.
@@20thand21stMovies Hi James. I communicated with Jon Mulvaney at Criterion about the possibility of an upgrade/trade-up program and received a reply from him today: "Hi Robert, Thanks for writing and being a supporter of our work! Unfortunately, there are no current plans to offer a trade-in program of existing releases that are/will be available in 4K, or for folks upgrading DVDs to Blu-rays. I'm sorry I don't have better news for you at the moment." So it looks like we will be living in double-dip land for the foreseeable future, but it was worth a try. Enjoy your downtime with the channel this week and we'll be looking forward to your return.
I will get the BFI release of Seven Samurai as like you I have the bluray so have those features and I just want the 4k of the film. A great slate for Nov and all 4ks and in the sale month as well win-win.
Just preordered the BFI Seven Samurai 4K as well! With the additional commentary and Dolby Vision, no brainer for me since I too already have the Criterion blu-ray features.
Paper Moon is the one I’m looking forward to the most but I will also pick up The Shape of Water 4K since I have just the regular blu-ray. I will also be getting Scarface.
@@20thand21stMovies 'Mouchette' and 'Diary of a Country Priest' would be a great start. I would also love a 4K, or hell, even a blu-ray of Victor Erice's 'The Spirit of the Beehive'. I really wish Criterion would do some of the 'lesser known' films like they used to .
I also have the Seven Samurai Blu-ray so i think I'll get the BFI 4K. I'm still skeptical Criterion may do a Kurosawa Box Set down the road??? I also have the previous 4K of Shape of Water so only if there are some worthy exclusive new extras I won't get that. I have the Godzilla Box Set (still need to watch it :) ) so no hurry for the 4K of Godzilla. I have a Blu-ray of Scarface, Funny Girl and Paper Moon but I will get the 4K upgrades. All 3 are great flicks 🙂
If you don’t already have the Godzilla blu-ray it makes the decision for the 4K a little easier perhaps. Depends on how much you want the film in your collection.
I'm sure glad I pre-ordered the BFI's 4K of Seven Samurai. I already own the Criterion Blu-ray discs and I really prefer the BFI's artwork and packaging and the extras like the postcards and the booklet. 👍
I just preordered the BFI as well, Rob. The additional commentary and Dolby Vision sold it for me. Since I already have the Criterion as well it makes sense 😀.
