It’s actually kinda overwhelming that this many movies (both blockbusters and indie Arthouse films) come out each passing year, especially coming from someone who collects movies on DVD (and rarely Blu-Ray and 4K) as a hobby.
@ddc2957
@ddc2957 Год назад
So you have 4K tech but mostly only collect DVD’s? That’s interesting. Just saving a dime or some other motive?
@maxtubb
@maxtubb Год назад
@@ddc2957I have nothing against Blu-Rays and 4Ks It's just that I prefer the DVD format since their cheaper to purchase and they have so much more personality in terms of Menus being vibrant and animated and Bouns Features being lackluster (for the most part) The only thing that sucks about collecting DVDs both on and not on the Criterion is that sometimes Criterion doesn't release some of their films on DVD, for example they recently released Inland Empire (2006) on the collection but its only on Blu-Ray which sucks because DVDs is the format, I prefer collecting movies on.

@@maxtubb I had to upgrade to Blu-Ray as a lot of cult horror now only gets HD releases. 4K is overkill, though.

Yeah, I don’t care to have Blu-rays. I own some from dual format purchases, but it’s a dilemma now that releases are foregoing DVD altogether now. But, back when I bought all my DVD’s there wasn’t really Apple and Google Play and Mubi wasn’t what it is now.

Great video, I used to really like Criterion, but now I find Arrow and Kino do a better job at making special editions and remasters.

Criterion seems to be putting less effort into their mission statement. Special features and encoding have really been lacking lately. They certainly didn't put much effort into protecting their licenses for UHD, and Kino Lorber ate their breakfast, lunch, and dessert. They now seem to be chasing mainstream prestige films that court the Oscars for their latest releases, while Arrow and Vinegar Syndrome seem to be making better choices.

Jafar Panahi was arrested in Jul 2022 for "propaganda against the islamic regime" and was just recently released. He is still banned from leaving the country and making films (but I don't think that will stop him).

@darwinia55
@darwinia55 Год назад
Janus Films partnered with The Voyager Company in 1984 to create a company that publishes films on laserdisc and called it The Criterion Collection. Voyager sold their share of the company to a German holding company in1994, and later Peter Becker and William Turell (owners of Janus FIlms) bought up all the shares and made Criterion into a private company. Even though Janus and Criterion are owned by the same people, they are separate companies: Janus focused on theatrical releasing and Criterion focused on home video.

I guess film bros will be overflowing with joy. For me? Not that anyone asked, of course, but I couldn’t care less about a single one of these films. This is what you end up with, when the films in demand list, dwindles every month. They no longer have a coming format, with which to resell their catalog. There’s no 8K format coming, and even if there were, what would you use to sell it? There is almost no appreciable bump in quality to the naked eye, and people just *barely* grabbed onto 4K. Now, it’s time to mine films that are seriously obscure, and have limited audience, to say the least. I wish them well, but I predict this “new” label, will fade away before they hit 20/30 releases, and that’s me, being incredibly optimistic.

I still want all the unreleased gialli to get put out by boutique labels. There are loads of them.

You are seriously out of the loop if you think films like EO and NO BEARS are obscure. You may not care, but there is an audience for these films, and Criterion won't lose a penny by creating this new imprint. Your concept of a dwindling "films in demand list" sounds quite provincial. Broaden your horizons.
@celluloidtherapy5003
@celluloidtherapy5003 Год назад
@@darwinia55 I’m out of what loop, exactly? I’m not being a wise guy at all, so I hope it doesn’t come across as such. My point was, that of course these films have an audience, but I don’t believe it’s beyond selling 1500-2000 copies, if they are lucky. This approach, though appreciated by a small minority, are exactly why Criterion went through a lay-off, and why they began embracing films with the potential of reaching a much larger audience. In the end, sales matter, and my comment on “films in demand,” refers to films with a large cult audience. You already see boutique labels double-dipping on titles, because the actual sellers that remain unreleased, ARE dwindling every month.

Janus is pronounced JAY-nes according to many English dictionaries. Since it's an American company, its name likely follows English pronunciation.

Huge fan of Godland. It should be buzzed about like Grizzly Man or Breaking the Waves were. I saw The Eight Mountains on Friday. It’s not good. The colors of its cinematography are oftentimes quite muted, combining with shallow focus. EO at times has cinematography like this too, and I wasn’t a fan. The Eight Mountains’ story is also very surface level and indifferent.
