➤Welcome to the “Cities Player Plans” video series. Cities Skylines 2 is out and now we must build! But how will we connect our city to the outside world efficiently? Service interchanges are the crucial last step to let traffic enter and exit your city from the freeway. This video is all about understanding the included service interchanges in Cities Skylines 2!

I love the fact that I ended up learning so much about city planning and interchanges by playing skylines and trying to get better at it. I don't even know how to drive... and my country does not even use roundabouts.

My favorite interchange design came from you; the so called Single Point Partial Cloverleaf design. I have tried it in CS2 and it works fine so far. Although I haven't reached the point yet where it would be challenged by heavier traffic. I do miss TM;PE from the first game. Back in the first game I've built a 150k population city that ran off a single SPPCI and it worked just fine.

The good news is that the developer of TMPE has announced they are working on a traffic tool mod for CS2, and while it will take a while to reach full functionality, they expect to have a basic version working by the time official mod support arrives.

Great video! I'd love to see a dedicated series focused on how to improve the in game prebuilt intersections. For example, in CS2 the standard partial cloverleaf always breaks down and I find myself redrawing part of the roads due to traffic merging where they shouldn't and whatnot.

The SPUI also has a variant which is as narrow as a regular 4-way intersection. You just elevate the highway over the local road and have a regular intersection underneath with the “ramp road”running between the highway directions far enough back that it doesn’t get blocked up onto the freeway. Then connect the “ramp road” to the freeway from the left side. I hope my description is clear enough. Edit: I forgot to add that while this type of SPUI isn’t very common IRL, it does exist and is called an inverted SPUI.

OH! I'm so excited to see that trumpet roundabout! My town has one! Ours actually has the local road going in the other direction (but it's to a very unpopulated area), and to handle the left turn issue once you get past the roundabout and the underpass, our exit/entry lanes are a diamond/with/light, as opposed to being curved into the local road. To be completely honest, I wouldn't normally think of building this interchange, even though I drive on one multiple times/week.

Big fan of your videos, thanks for keeping them coming. If I may make a request, can you do a video on placement of freeway interchanges? I always find myself building a city to ~20k population and then having major gridlock. At that point the city is so established that it feels wrong to nuke entire neighborhoods for the sake of bringing in additional connectivity (I know this happens IRL, hello I-5/I-90 interchange). Having some strategy for thinking about potential interchange locations at the game start would be helpful. It's likely that you did this already for C:S so any links to videos or stream segments that cover that would be appreciated!

The funky merging lanes on the Single Point have a distinct purpose: They manipulate the Traffic AI into merging at specific points on the road, instead of at the last possible moment, which causes the highway traffic to flow better. You can see how not abusing the merging lanes causes issues at 11:49 on the video where the white van with the trailer dead stops in traffic while occupying two lanes in order to switch out of the turning lane it has found itself in. You basically want to add a turning lane next too a strait through lane whenever possible to keep traffic flowing better.
@YUMBL

Sure, but I think it could have been designed much more cleanly. Using fewer than three lanes to begin with. The built in SPUI is very messy in its current state.

@ThaJay
@ThaJay 8 месяцев назад
Yeah, I thought about it but this confirms it. We can not do a proper SPUI in CS2 right now without traffic management. It needs to be a 3 phase light with separate left turns on the local road. Only alternative is to split off the straight direction but that requires a third level or taking off the straight directions from the local road some other way. Oh how I can't wait for the mod update and the traffic manager, advanced road tools and move-it mods. I love CS2 and what they made it but I really miss those mods for my road building. Hardcore landscaping to force the road I want is really finnicky and a lot of work. Oh and landscape not physically snapping to roads any more has its upsides, but getting the landscape to have some fat on the bottom side of the road along a hill is so much work now! So I hope a smooth to road / building landscaping option also emerges at some point.

I noticed that diverging diamond interchanges were not covered in this video. I think DDI's are best used where turning traffic on-to and off-of the minor street outweighs traffic going straight through. Also, I've seen a diamond variant in Georgia where the left turn lanes onto the freeway kind of cross places with each other like: VV /\ V /\/\, looks a little like a Diamond / DDI hybrid.
@YUMBL
@YUMBL 8 месяцев назад
The DDI actually excels in one spot that the spui doesn’t. When the majority or arterial traffic is not crossing to the other side of the freeway but is turning left or right onto it. My recent video explains it better :)

@@YUMBL and at one point, Arizona's Department of Transportation wanted to build a 3-level diverging diamond interchange in Tucson as a part of a SR-210/I-10 improvement project. Through traffic along the arterial (Kolb Rd) would take the top level, while the middle level would be for traffic getting on and off the freeway. Definitely taking the fun out of this. And not having access to intersection asset editor and ped walkways being kinda awful and then jwalking anyway The SPUI gets stuck on the light and pedestrians in game.. 7:06 Not quite. This one is a "dogbone" interchange, not a dumbbell. A dumbbell interchange has full roundabouts at either end (so that traffic approaching the interchange from the local road can turn around without crossing the highway). See 9:06. A dogbone has the two roundabouts at the ends of the highway crossing not fully closed (because barely anyone is using the part of the roundabout that's facing the highway). See 7:06. If you draw a dumbbell, it's a line with circles at either end. If you draw a prototypical bone, it's a thin middle section that flares out into a bulge at either end.

Can you elaborate on the downsides of using a system interchange where a service interchange would be more appropriate? I usually build a high capacity system interchange design to flow directly into my downtown main street. It seems like it might be flooding the first intersection that traffic reaches, especially the first left turn. I'm not sure whether a "weaker" interchange would perform better here.
@YUMBL
@YUMBL 8 месяцев назад
Sure, a system interchange is overkill where a service interchange should be used. Just as using a service interchange where a regular intersection or roundabout is appropriate would be overkill. System interchanges are larger often with more overpasses which makes them quite expensive in real life. Overusing them is an unrealistic waste of space that will lead to improbable city compositions when overbuilt, as well as an over reliance on freeways where the city (buildings and people) should be.

@davidroddini1512
@davidroddini1512 9 месяцев назад
The service interchanges with roundabouts are free flowing service interchanges in low traffic situations. It’s only once the traffic volume leading into and on the roundabouts increases too much that it stops being free flowing.
@YUMBL
@YUMBL 9 месяцев назад
I misunderstood for a moment there. Service interchanges are much smaller and generally lower flow than system interchanges. As such they allow for conflict. One must exit to a small enough road that conflict is allowed eventually, right?
@davidroddini1512
@davidroddini1512 9 месяцев назад
There is an interchange I came up with. It works in CS but is large for the real world. It is a hybrid of the diamond and the cloverleaf. The highway has parallel one-way two lane roads adjacent to the highway. These roads are then connected to the highway with ramps at each end. Then connect the local road to the parallel one way roads using cloverleaf ramps that are bidirectional. For smoother flow use two one way ramps (one in each direction) flared out to connect each end of the loop to the road it connects to. This would make a service interchange variant of the cloverleaf, at the expense of being larger than a standard cloverleaf interchange. That is why it is not used IRL.
@jandin8862
@jandin8862 9 месяцев назад
As they said, being free-flowing isn't necessarily the point of service interchanges. But if you start with the ParClo, split the arterial in 2 1-ways, make it longer, adjust heights and use a bridge/tunnel to do the left turns, that's free flowing. I was looking for a design that would work under heavy traffic in vanilla CS:1 (it's hard to make anything at-grade work well with vanilla lights and lane controls), and got to this.

It always bothered me that interchanges are called 'intersections' in game. Could someone tell the devs the difference.

Even the intersections provided by the developers are no good. Did they do anything right? I can’t believe they are so incompetent! I guess all the money they got from CS1 went to their pockets instead of hiring more competent developers for CS2
