Critical Incident Review 6-20-24 

On the afternoon of May 14, 2024, Kern County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a keep the peace and wellness check request in the 10000 block of Shellabarger Road. Later that day, deputies received multiple reports that a male subject under the influence of cocaine in possession of an AR-15 style rifle was having a mental health crisis at the same address.
Deputies attempted to make contact with the armed suspect. The suspect shot at deputies and KCSO deputies were involved in an officer involved shooting in the 10000 block of Shellabarger Road in Bakersfield, CA. Air Support and Metro Unit deputies issued verbal commands to de-escalate for approximately 30 minutes.
On June 20, 2024, the Kern County Sheriff's Office convened a Critical Incident Review Board examining the use of force in this incident. The use of force in this incident was determined to be within department policy.
