@@jonathangardner4475 A great option, but the issue is readers. Using SEAL mantra: Two is one, one is none. (NOT a SEAL nor will I ever support stolen valor) Other factor is power, while still portable a CD reader will suck a lot more power than something reading SD cards. And finally, durability. If CD player gets wet, it's motor is toast and/or lens on reader gunked-up. IF you have time, money and it's a third option- I'd go for it. Just sitting here thinking of last time I used/needed a CD reader. Last four laptiops, chromebook and tablet didn't/don't have readers. I needed one in relative hurry and nearest Best Buy didn't have one in stock. As always, all ideas and options considered and questioned are good. We all learn by addressing things like this.. TY.
@-Rook-
@-Rook- 6 месяцев назад
@@jonathangardner4475You would need a full computer system (laptop with integrated or external DVD drive) and more power to run it, so it depends on your setup, however optical disks are very robust. An SD Card can be popped into a low power phone but both SD and USB will suffer bit rot, so should be re-written every 12 months for safety. Losing bits in compressed or encrypted data can mean losing everything.

Probably one of the best ways to 'prep' is to buy some rural land within a few hours of your primary residence, and regularly spend time on that land, intentionally minimizing your dependence on your phone, Internet, GPS, and creature comforts. Use a camper if you must but preferably tent on your land at first, and consider building a structure with your own labor, that offers shelter and comfort. Keep it off grid and self-sustaining if at all possible. Cultivate part of your land and learn to grow some of your own food. Explore your land and discover what is growing that you can use for food or first aid remedy. Look for safe water sources that can be made potable with minimal effort, and consider drilling your own well. Learn to think logically and develop intermediate math muscles. Use the Internet, sure, but try to work things out on your own (at least in your head and on paper) first. Include friends and family where possible/practical. Passing on concrete/tangible life skills is perhaps one of the most noble things you can do for young people.

Side note. LM Studio has tons of free, local LLM's. They work, and you can find specialized versions. Mathematics, Biology, Literature, programming. Small self contained AI that will run on a good desktop machine, or even smaller depending on the LLM size.
