God bless you both for discussing this. Don't know why this only has three likes, including mine. I'm currently pursuing a Master's degree in Social Work from a CUNY school (City University of New York) I come face to face with this every day. There are no alternate arguments presented, it's basically indoctrination to this worldview. I will definitely seek out the resources on Niel's website.

Thank you so much for what you do. For the longest time, something wasn't sitting right with critical race theory when I first heard it and then something started to not sit with my views on social injustice, I just couldn't put my finger on it until I watched this video and the other one you did with Monique on critical race theory. This has freed me on so many levels. I'm not one to follow cultural norms and usually seen as an outcast because I believe in standing for God's truth always. If there is antenna raised, I have to do some further investigation before I accept. I give God all the glory for helping me do so. Even both of the American Gospels really enlightened me and confirmed somethings that never really sat right before.

I generally agree with a lot of what is said in this podcast, but wanted to add that I recently heard a criticism of the Meta-Analysis study that Dr. Shenvi cited: while it does demonstrate disparity regarding first names, that disparity disappears when it was the last name that was changed to compare historically “black” surnames with names from other racial groups. This brings the conclusion of the study into question: was unconscious bias truly the motivation behind the disparate hiring practices, or can it be explained by another factor? Why would people demonstrate a bias against the name “Keisha,” but not against “Jones?” It’s possible that the explanation is more about the difficulty of pronunciation (or some other explanation) and not about the ethnic background of the individual. Just something to consider when looking at and citing that particular study.

I think they should do that study again, but choose "White" names that are traditionally less "middle class" -- like Billy Bob, Netta Sue, Bubba (that's a real given name in some parts of Appalachia), Sayward. . . Names that are usually White but usually poor. I think a lot of the bias isn't White privilege but Green Privilege (💵). My Black friends who have names like Keisha are the ones who come from the same type of neighborhood I do -- a crappy part of the South Bronx. Also if one wants to get a job in media, media doesn't want someone (of any race) with a "poor" accent.

This is so informative. I knew there was something very wrong with these ideas, but couldn't put my finger on it. Thank you so much for your podcast and the people you interview.

Reminds me of when satan wanted Jesus to serve him over his Father.

So could it be said that critical theory relies on straw man arguments?

I think it's more of a "Kafka trap". But there's a new book now that explains it well, "Cynical Theories" by James Lindsay and Helen Pluckrose.
