In this lecture from his Fayetteville State University Critical Thinking class, Dr. Sadler brings together two previously introduced sets of concepts: distinctions between deductive and inductive arguments, and implicit or unstated premises. He discusses how inductive arguments involve general rules that admit of exceptions, and how deductive arguments involve universal rules.

You're welcome, and I'm glad you're finding the lectures helpful. When I'm advising students, actually, I try to push them to take classes with at least several different philosophy professors, just so that they can get multiple takes on matters. I passed your comments on to Suzanne by email -- I'm no longer at FSU, where we shot and uploaded these videos.

Thank you SUZANNE HESSELTINE! This is an AMAZING idea. I respect my philosophy professor very much, she knows her stuff, but sometimes when it's harder to grasp certain concepts and she is unavailable, it's nice to look at other ways those concepts are taught. You guys have managed to help a college student from a small Albertan city you most likely haven't heard of hahaha... today, wrote my philosophy final exam and when it came to the implicit premises part, I remembered this. Again, Thank you

This was great! I’ve been struggling in my online class and the instructor helped this make sense to me!

you're very welcome -- but you should also thank someone behind the scenes -- Suzanne Hesseltine, who gave me the idea to record these lectures, and helped me get them into the FSU channel

@Lazdinger Well, one implicit premise would likely be: those who grow up in Alberta know about cattle and stampedes

+Gregory B. Sadler what book are you recommending and do you have education online via the university?

Michael Remington Not sure what you're asking. I left FSU 5 years ago. Whats "the university" you're referring to.

sorry I didn't realize you left, it was your class that attracted me in the first place to inquire about FSU. after 11 hours of watching your classes its my opinion that your a great teacher, I only hope you are still teaching and doing well

Michael Remington Thanks! I am indeed still teaching, online, hosting classes on our company site (ReasonIO.com). I also do ethics training for corporate clients, and a few other things. But, as far as the traditional academy goes, I've left the teaching side of that. If you'd like to get on our mailing list, to see when we've got classes or other events coming up, you can send me an email at greg@reasonio.com

Thanks for the upload. This helps with explaining rhetorical devices with my HS seniors. Did you teach at FSU before Marist?

"Where there's smoke there's fire". Just swap the two terms around....to become: "where there's fire there's smoke"!

Where there's smoke there incomplete combustion. Tires burning out is a misnomer. The scientific explanation is burnouts produce heat vaporizing organic compounds (including water) that recondense into droplets and clump together similar to clouds.

help! "It sounded like a stampede of cattle," Crooks said. "I grew up in Alberta, so I know." This would seem to be reasonably easy but I couldn't get it... what would be a good implicit premis for this???? "There are a lot of cows in Alberta" ??? or " I was a cattle rancher in Alberta"???
