This video is designed to help students, lifelong learners and professionals understand the Fallacy of Straw Man -- a common mistake in reasoning and argument.
In this video, I discuss what the fallacy is, map out its basic structure, point out what goes wrong with reasoning in the fallacy, examine three easy-to-understand examples, and give you advice about how to spot and avoid the fallacy.
This is part of a whole series of videos discussing common fallacies. To see the whole series, you can click here: ru-vid.com/group/PLy91AvVMEx_9q5dUC_w2AFzaS-qBN3mEg
Intro music is RU-vid's public domain mp3, "Keep It Tight," by John Deley.

Guys, I think we should consider letting Dr.Sadler's commercials run so that he can at least derive a mere drip of income. It's the least we can do to compensate the man for his time and energy!

This series is wonderful! I've heard about many of these fallacies in passing before, but rarely understood them in-depth. I feel like I'm FINALLY getting a good grasp on them thanks to these videos. I'm going to watch them all. Thank you for making these!

it was a long time ago, but when we did the straw man fallacy it was only to misrepresent the argument of the other person. The entailment that my position was therefore accepted was not included. Thank you for all your work.

That's a variant on it. Usually the motivation for engaging in Straw Man is to steer away from one position and towards another

yes...I think we separated straw man from false dilemma, but I won't quibble about it.

So if you are seeking to clarify someones position you can commit a straw man fallacy without knowing it. As it might seem you are trying to attack or weaken it when in fact you are pointing out something and questioning your own understanding. Am I clear in my question? Plus do I understand it correctly?

+NoirMorter If you're misrepresenting their argument, in order to make your own position look stronger by comparison, that's a straw man fallacy. I'd say from a pragmatic perspective that, if you're finding that people are often interpreting what you view as just "pointing out something and questioning your own understanding" as attacks or criticism, you probably want to take a look at why that interpretation is occurring regularly.

Critical Thinking, Logic, and Argumentation (ReasonIO) Thank you! I figured I would start to do more research on a topic before I start to have a conversation about it. That would be the basic, I also have started to make it clear I am just asking a question when I do ask one.

Another very common fallacy -- will we see less of this now that election season is over? Probably not!

The Straw Man Fallacy ... also called the Richard Dawkins/Lawrence Krauss Fallacy .... :)

+Jo van de Kragt They hardly have the market cornered on contemporary uses of it. Better to say it's a fallacy they fall into, rather than add their names as synonyms for it

question, doesn't oversimplifying bring both parties in the argument to the base subject matter that was/is evidence for starting the discussion in the first place? a simple misunderstanding of sorts? to bring to a plane, an equal ground of standing to conduct discussion? if one cannot understand something per-SE.... in a lawfully enforced contract doesn't simplifying the matter to the point of clarity produce remedy?? instead of intentionally over complicating things to forcefully submit the other party to concede? what if the beguilement harms the other party? and what about information transparency? a meeting of the minds? im just curious
