I’m not looking to make a living from photography. I just enjoy it as a stress relief doing street photography. But it’s still a lot of fun watching all of all of these.

After reading and listening to Dan for several years, I have cut back on the number of photos I keep and even less than I share. At the same time I am printing more. Prints do make you edit more carefully. Now I am taking pictures just for me.

I very rarely edit ... And keep everything ... I always shoot for me .. art is about you .. the best photographers and artist like Robert Frank and Garry Winogrand did it because they loved what they did .

It's only when you try to choose a photo to print that you realise what makes a good image, and the importance of everything being exactly right - the screen is forgiving of blown highlights or slightly-missed focus. Printing forces you to become technically better. A really interesting conversation - thanks Marc & Dan.

When I was a child, I remember that my parents asked me the typical question "what do you want to be when you grow up?" I replied "national geographic photographer". At that time I didn't know what I liked about the photographs I saw in the national geographic magazine, but now that I've been practicing photography more, I think I'm beginning to understand it. Those photographs told stories, they weren't just pretty images of random people and animals, they were stories of people living on the other side of the world. Now I realize that and at 28, I have realized that I really like photojournalism, telling events in images. I bought my camera about 6 or 7 years ago, and just this year I started to really use it. I made an instagram account in which I upload photos almost daily, as something that motivates me to go out to take photos, but I have the great desire to find a good story, print my images and maybe make a small book. This channel has helped me realize that I really like this. Thank you very much for sharing, greetings from Mexico.

The "Yellow Magazine" is still a goal for many, many people. That org has really branched out into things like television which has really saved them as Gen X didn't subscribe to the magazine. Nor, apparently, has any generation since. They still do good work but have been impacted by budget restraints like the rest.

I started going through photos I took inn the past 2-3 years, And feeling sorry for them "Collecting digital dust" as someone said in an old interview with Marc. So now I edit them, design the prints and print them, On my dime, for the family and for my colleagues at work to hang in their office. I may be stupid to spend that money on giving prints to other people - But there's nothing more enjoyable than to see the print hanging on a wall. Any wall. And I agree - I'm very critical with myself at that point.

When I started teaching myself photography 10 years ago I went on Alibis and to thrift stores and bought very inexpensive photo book I could. I bought at least 80 over a couple of years. I think just absorbing looking at all those photos helped me develop my eye.
@marcsilber
@marcsilber 4 года назад
Yes putting your prints in book form is so important.
@gstefanos2792
@gstefanos2792 4 года назад
I too think that's the best (or should I say the only?) way to go, absorbing the printed work of old masters. On the other hand, you don't need prints to realize you're not a real photographer yet. This moment of epiphany can come with shooting digital too.
@newsbatavian
@newsbatavian 4 года назад
@@gstefanos2792 FWIW: I think I made two mental breakthroughs about how I imagine photos, and hence, how I take them, after I'd been shooting a while. The first came from deciding to teach myself to draw and hence studying a lot of art. I began to look at composition in new ways; the second came when I started shooting video more frequently. That changed how I see light.

This is a fantastic RU-vid channel. It is so refreshing to see something that isn’t focused on gear and which brands are shit and what you should be throwing your money at. Stuff like this inspires people to go out and make stuff and improve themselves in whatever capacity they strive for. Thanks! And keep it up.

I agree about the gear talk. I understand why people are enamored but when it comes to photography it's about the take. In the end, nothing else matters.

As a long time picture taker, aspiring to be a "photographer", I always struggled with being satisfied by the pictures I took. What looked promising at first was actually a bad picture. Words in this video that greatly impacts me is that most photos we take will not stand the test of time with respect to their being "good". Hearing professional photographers say that is very freeing. Thank you.

Great conversation. Thanks. I once heard someone say that "an image only becomes a photograph when it's seen". I interpreted that as "an image only becomes a photograph when it's seen on paper". Whether it be a book or framed on a wall, my photographs acquire a different, better quality when they're on paper. Thanks again.

Truth is we define and redefine all of these things and their parameters. There are no absolutes in art except that a creative mind be behind it. The beauty of the human being is that under any circumstances and within any parameters... the soul can speak. When one generation thinks the art has died it's just reborn in a different place or in different way. Photography is just one of many mediums used to express our humanity. When the elite begin to erect the walls of constraint and tradition the new soul searches for an avenue of expression without the constraints of someone else's definition. Yes, there is the sacred, but be careful what one is sacred about.

I am a Canadian documentary photographer my 2 most interesting and inspiring photographers are Robert Frank and Saul Lieter , I am not a big fan of "the decisive moment" thing but hey learn from who inspires you ... I print not all but safe the best for printing . I am an artist painted for years I would take some work and enter some local art dealers and ask for them to see my work . Not all would look but some did ..

I think this video has just rejuvenated my photography. I only touch my camera maybe once or twice a year for events because I have no desire to take photos anymore. I have a local photo shop and I'm going to buy a small album and go through some photos and print them out. Now I want to take my camera out and try to capture something that I would pay to print out and put in my new album. Thank you.

7:00 i wonder how the clothing a photographer is wearing effects Daniel's impression of their work? Is it like, you believe their fashion sense can be a predictor of the type of images they'll have created? What is an example of an outfit that might make a person's portfolio of prints seem not even worth opening? (Cause I hope it's not something I wear!)

I think a lot of us have been thinking these things, but it's been disjointed. We're aware of it. On the tips of our tongues, at fingers' grasp. Daniel is spelling it out. OK sure, he's evangelical for printing - it's Blurb after all. But sometimes a company is smart enough to find an ambassador who believes what he's saying. That's Daniel. Tell me he's lying...(he's not)

The least religious guy in the world is the "evangelist." The irony is not lost on me. As for my printing addiction. It's real. As you mention. I've been doing this for almost thirty years. I'm hooked. Regardless of brand.
