Just a note on the Netflix resume at 5:26, my understanding is that companies don’t like it when you put your photo on a resume since it opens them up to bias allegations on the grounds of things that can be gleaned from appearance, and many HR departments discard them to avoid exposing the company to risk. Plus they tend not to play well with automated resume readers. The more you know! 🌈💫

Actually there is forced diversity where big tech companies must employ POC and women, and that is really stupid because computers dont care about your gender or color and whats point in employing people based on color or gender? You are employing less competent candidates who will probably not do job because of lack of knowledge. There is no such thing as someone rejected because of color or gender, this is felony and person that got rejected will for sure sue them. It would be all over news and company would be buried. "Especially in tech", dude, that is most untrue statement ever heard. I can sent you article if you want to read why there are so much white/asian men in tech even thought others have it easier.
I really enjoy this series! So insightful + I know that it's such a great resource for aspiring and early in career software engineers. I think I would be too afraid to go back into my old resumes but that may be a fun thing to do one day just for kicks and giggles 😛
I own and run a software company I started in my late teens/early twenties. Up until a few years ago, I would handle all the hiring myself. And one thing we absolutely avoid is any resume with a photo attached! A lot of companies, especially in Silicon Valley avoid them like the plague. There are ethical/legal challenges that can quickly arise and is something I would strongly encourage folks to avoid. Also - it's varies widely between companies in regards to including an "About Me" section. Generally you want to avoid it as most employers, especially at the larger company level, are more interested in your skills and what you can contribute versus getting to know you as a person - that's partly what the interview process is for - not the initial screening! I mean this with the utmost respect, and no offence to the artsy folks, but your resume is more common and typical amongst the graphic design folks I see. Not a bad thing necessarily, but I would avoid that format if you're a newer engineer (which I know you aren't!)
I love these career building videos from a mid-level perspective. I feel like most of that content are geared towards your first job or just graduating, but I want to improve and not just review the extreme basics again.

It's interesting for me to see technology and software engineering resumes because there are opportunities to insert more character to them, like what you did with the Xcode formatting. Having worked mostly in corporate, resumes tend to converge around certain styles and layouts. I do like the About paragraph in your pre-Netflix resume because it's concise and feels specific to you, which is important. On photos, I know that outside the U.S. they are more common. Having worked with a few career counselors and recruiters, I believe the recommendation to leave photos out is to eliminate the possibility that a recruiter or manager makes interviewing decision based on looks. That's something we clearly don't want to happen. That said, there are also studies out there that say discrimination can also happen against resumes simply with names that don't sound "White" enough. Too many factors impact hiring... In any case, thanks for showing the progression of your resumes! It's pretty informative to see how a software engineer or technology professional can demonstrate career growth through resumes!
I'm curious as well, but just imagine studying with a full time job. Most likely 45-90 minutes a day for a couple months :) this is something I will be doing in 2021 so I've been watching her videos to gage a healthy time to spend because she's obviously successful at it
Having the colors with the Patreon resume isn't really necessary as it wouldn't really help with the ATS. It could help with the recruiter though, but it would need to be easy to read. Black text would work just fine. The major flaw with the Netflix resume is the picture because that will be a problem with the ATS. If you really want to display yourself, a link to your LinkedIn profile will do. Also, it is good to remove icons also due to the problems with the ATS. The ATS is mainly good with plain text without any special characters.
I'm trying g to get a job as a data analyst. So I'm structuring my resume for this purpose. However I looked at several formats. Why would someone structure their skills sections at the top rather then the traditional bottom?
There is actually numerous ways you can write your resume, i found that some formats didnt work for me, because i either did not want to include it in my resume or didnt have the information for it. It is easy to find Mayuko's resume format on Word, because they have a template on there. Anyways, you can always google a resume and find what works for you. I guess the best way is really to seek help from someone who has done it before, someone whom you trust and has some forms of job experience. Hope this helps! :D
