Critters in Glen Croe

A walk in the shadow of the Arrochar Alps, partly on the old military road running through Glen Croe, between 'Rest and be thankful' and Arrochar. Along the way we see critters: a lizard or newt, sheep and cattle, all doing their best to survive in this harsh yet exceedingly beautiful landscape.
This 7 or 8 miles walk passes between some of Scotland's most rugged and impressive mountains - be prepared to have your breath taken!
From 'Rest and be thankful', sitting between Beinn an Lochain and Beinn Luibnean, we head on to the old military road that runs below the A83, a road often blocked and made impassable by landslips. Perhaps one day they will build that tunnel or series of tunnels and put an end to an unacceptable series of road closures that saw traffic diverted many tens of miles and communities put at considerable disadvantage.
Close to temporary walls or defences constructed to keep falling mud and rock at bay, we chance upon a lizard, or maybe a newt, a creature we don't get to see too often these days, while up on the lower slopes of Ben Donich a sheepdog is doing its best to round up three ovine escapees.
Under the rocky shards of The Cobbler, there's a short yet dangerous walk on the narrow grass verge of the A83 before picking up a steep forest track by a car-park, and we stop for lunch with views way down into the glen.
At the head of Loch Long, on the edge of Arrochar, we ponder the huge volume of plastic waste that has gathered on the loch shores, and realise that this, and the microplastics they create, now pose a major threat to every living thing on Planet Earth, even that wee lizard, or newt, and that mankind is now fighting for its very survival.
A stunning little walk with a sting in the tale.

Wow what a beautiful place , walking through the mountains... The animals living there plus modern day traffic just travelling through with the odd cottage here and there..a wonderous time to live. Pity about the plastic....l was happy with paper and cardboard back in the day.

Thanks Lynda. We managed quite well with paper bags; we even had grease-proof paper for wet goods. I fear the use of plastics is now having a major detrimental effect on us all.

Love it Ed and love that whole area! You've given me an idea for me and my pals to go hiking and hammock camping now, we'll catch train from Wishaw to Glasgow Central then as you suggest, bus it from Glasgow to the Rest and be Thankful ✊
@EdExploresScotland
@EdExploresScotland 6 месяцев назад
Sounds like a plan. Remember that you have to book the journey in advance if you want the bus to stop at 'Rest and be thankful'. If not, it simply will not stop there, or pick up from there. I recommend the bus timetables found in bustimes.org.

@@EdExploresScotland that's great Ed, much appreciated, I definitely wouldn't have known that and ended up in Inveraray 🤦‍♂️ other places I've hammock camped and hiked are Loudon Hill and Glen Trool in the Galloway Forest, maybe you'd be interested in the history of the Bruce and Covenanters In these areas too?

I and my friend where heading towards Ben Lawers and found a ram in a bog right up to it's belly and managed to pull it out.

Well done. Not just as easy as it sounds. I had a similar situation right here in Glen Croe many years ago with a sheep stuck in mud. I was unable to lift it out, and have always felt guilty that I didn't try hard enough. Only thing I could do was make a call to the farmer and let him know, but the sheep was almost dead when I came across it, and wouldn't have survived.

Hi Ed, I've found one of your more up to date shows. It is so beautiful. How lucky you are ! My home in Australia is so different. I am too old to do much walking now anyway. However I'm coming HOME next week, so I'll be able to see some of my beautiful country. Also I will be wandering around Glasgow and Kilmarnock for a short while. This will probably be my last visit. So keep making your shows and playing the beautiful music. By the way there are lots of quite large lizards where I live.

Great well video along Glen Croe Ed. Been along that way many times. Just not on foot to which you have got me intrigued for a walk in the future. As for the rubbish in the Loch, I noticed that on my last visit . Simply appalling how some folk treat our country / beauty spots etc. do we still do flogging for the guilty culprits? lol. Well done , great scenery and a very pleasant video. All the best Andy

Great video Ed. Done lots of hill walking there last year. But never walked along Glen Croe so that was nice to see. It really is breathtaking. Hoping to get over again soon to bag Ben Donich. Thank s for making these great videos Ed. Ps..agree with you about that wooden cutlery-it’s awful!

Wow, the views in Glen Crow are stunning! 😍 Looks like a challenging walk but worth it. I understand your frustration about the landslides. I'd be so nervous about making sure I took the right path 😬

Hi Ed, that was a nice wee walk. It's a shame the big supermarkets have done away with the wee greengrocers of our youth. The places where you went in and got the totties straight into the auld bag that was kept for the purpose. All the rest were in paper pokes.

Absolutely. With regard to microplastics I fear they are the potential cause of so many illnesses and diseases, and that we are now only beginning to realise that that is the case. If so, we have to implement pretty quick measures to control the amount of used plastic. But I also fear that it is too late, and the damage is done. For me, it was a light-bulb moment when I heard of the link between dementia and environmental microplastics.

I've used the word "magic" to describe the Highlands so many times I cringe when it leaves my lips. That's my problem because they Are Magical! Bit of a cold walk. Thanks for taking one for the team Ed! Wood Spoons! 😞Small Shops, Paper Bags and Glass Bottles..... a Proper Bottle!

Thank you. I suspected it might be a newt. The tail looked a little fatter than that found on lizards.
