WOW! So much of your guys' input thank you so much! In regard to GROCERIES- yes, I think I did make a bit of a mistake🙈- I would say it's definitely more like $120-150 a month 😱😱 I'm sorry for the mistake! I hope then now you can DEFINITELY see what the real cost of living in Croatia is like, including with the average salary. love you all so so much!!!!
@dbabicwa
@dbabicwa 5 лет назад
Kal, the real cost is extremely difficult to find in Croatia. One example are kinder gardens, right?! They are cheap, but subsidized by the local Government, namely Bandic. Than Public Transport, very very subsidized, ZET is paid by City budget, which is a huge taxation on City dwellers. A lot can be said about schooling, Universities and Zdravstvo (Public Health). All subsidized. While this might not be a huge problem for wealthy countries, it is unsustainable for Croatia, I'm afraid. So, good luck to them and you!

Health insurance in Croatia is taken out of your paycheck every month...depending on your paycheck. It's 15% of your paycheck each month... + you pay 'dopunsko' which is 70kn each month.
@zoki5550
@zoki5550 5 лет назад
No, she said correct, the employer pays for health care (+15% on your gross salary), but your gross salary is deducted by 20% for pension
@zoki5550
@zoki5550 5 лет назад
just google it,... you can call it gross 1 and gross 2 gross 1 is calculation for your neto salary (includes pension and taxes you pay) gross 2 is for your employer, he must add 16,5% of your gross salary (16,5% for health care), and that sum is all total salary cost example total salary cost = ? gross salary (example 10 000 units of HRK or $) (gross 1) 1. gross 1 = 10 000 2. contribution from gross 1 = 2 000 15% for pension =1 500 5% for pension = 500 3. income 1 (1. gross - 2. contribution) = 8 000 4. tax break = 3 800 (min tax break on salary in CRO) 5. tax base (1. gross - 2. contribution - 4. tax break) = 4 200 6. tax (is progressive by group 12%, 25%, 40%) country (4 200 puts you in 25% group) = 1 008 county / city (10% is most common) = 100,8 7. neto salary (3. income 1 - 6. tax) = 6 891,20 (this is what you will get) 8. gross 2 (gross 1 + 16,5% of gross 1) 16,5% for health care 1 650 (changed from 15 to 16,5 from this year) = 10 000 + 1 650 = 11 650 (this is what employer will pay for you = total salary cost) math is good but everything else is loosely translated, sry 😅

@@coldwarrior5 Might sound like much but it is still way cheaper than here in US. Recently I've cut my hand which required 10 stitches to fix, cost me $1300. I did not have insurance because it would cost me just about $400 a month to maintain health insurance with $10,000 deductible and 20% co-pay. A day spent in a hospital can cost anywhere between $1500-$35,000 depending on type of care received.

I lived in Croatia when I was young and I remember my parents stressing over money. My parents were college educated (many people in Croatia are) but life was not easy financially. There were times when we'd run out of money towards the end of the month before they got their next paycheck, or my dad's boss wouldn't pay him on time. Now I live in the US and while I miss Croatia immensely and I miss Croatian kind hearted people, it is at least nice to never have to worry about money.

It is very important to put things in perspective FIRST. A 20 minutes video with most important information at the very end makes a lot of viewers lose interest, stop watching and draw completely wrong conclusions. This also could have been avoided by translating each cost into a percentage of average pay in the respective country: US rent 1000$ or 33% of average wage, CRO rent 375$ or 44% of average wage, etc.

Vedran Jurić Well, it’s her video, she can film in which ever order she decides fits best. What you’re suggesting is what makes most sense for you. Besides, the title says “costs of living” and “america vs croatia” and that’s exactly what she did (first), she compared them.

Just because you are free to do whatever you want, it does not make it right, or correct. Health insurance is not free in Croatia. If you're employed, your employer automatically deduces a percentage to pay for the general health insurance, along with taxes and pension fund. You can also choose to pay 70 kn per month for additional health insurance (which covers more medications and medical procedures). If you compare your net salary (money you get after deducing everything) and your gross salary (money your employed needs to pay out), the net salary is ~55-60% of gross salary. A huge amount of money you earned goes to the government. That is one of the reasons salaries are small and entrepreneurs stay away from Croatia for the most part. In Croatia, when we're given our paycheck, we receive net salary with everything deduced, while in USA they receive gross salary and pay their taxes and insurance separately (if I'm not mistaken), which is why certain things seem "free" in Croatia. They're not free, you just don't think about them here because it gets automatically taken care for you.

One of the reasons your utilities are more is that the Seattle non-metro area is one of the cheapest electric and gas rates around. In fact the state is the 2nd cheapest almost cheaper than Montana. The residential rate is about 9.75 cents per KW outside seattle city limits (so the surrounding cities). The US average is 14 cents and Croatia is 15 cents. Natural gas is cheap and popular. Propane even in the US is about 3x more money. Also, much of the power comes from hydro which is cheap and some pretty large wind farms.

Monthly salary difference is also the biggest factor why people in Croatia (young ones) stay longer in family house together with parents. While in USA they move out sooner. It has its own pros and cons. Living in caring family is actually good. You dont alienate from parents. However living alone helps you become different person (maybe better, maybe worse). Perhaps that could be the subject of your new video? Young people and their perspective (or if its case sensitive, not perspective but their habits). :)

So basically we're a shithole, not that I didn't know that before. Adjusted for salaries, the cost of living in Croatia is very high. Most families spend the majority of income on food and utilities, and very little is left for everything else. Food in particular is very expensive in Croatia: while eating out is cheaper than in US and most Western countries, you can actually find cheaper food in supermarket in Germany for example, than the one in Croatia, which is ridiculous. As you mentioned yourself, if everyone actually paid all of the costs on an average salary, we'd be in debt, which is why an average Croatian citizen is cutting costs whenever possible, including taking public transportation, chasing discounts, and yes living with parents. Great video though, your best one yet. Informative and fun. Hopefully we'll see more of that in the future.

At the coast for that money you can live under the bridge. Average salary in Zagreb (dec 2018) $1095 (after tax) --------------- Once again Zagreb is quite cheap comparing to Dubrovnik or Split. I really dont know where did you find your numbers ... Also you dont have to pay schools or universities in Croatia as they are free. 24 min video reading stuff from Numbeo. If you wanted to make a real comparation you should put more effort in all this ... not just effort in making your video 24 min long to read 7 prices ... And what food do you buy for $90 per month? Yeah, I don't know how you get expenses down to 90$, really? Is it because you're woman so you don't eat much? I'd say it's closer to 150$ here as well. And that's really just basic home made food 😉

Health insurance: its not really truth that its free. Your employer pays you insurance every month, and its about 15% of your salary. So it doesnt matter if you are sick or not...you are paying it. And on the other note: it DOES mean that if you need to go check your heart/ lungs/ brain/whatever, you are probably not going to pay for your check at the hospital BUT ALSO you will probably get your check in a 6-12 months 😁😁😁 My dad has really bad neck and arm pain from november last year. He needed to get that checked in hospital (for 'free') and he got the appointment in june thia year (so for 3 months😁). But since he couldnt sit, sleep, work or drive from the pain, je decided to go to private doctor (which is not free...and you have to pay a lor of money for it). So he got the diagnosis amd apllyed in hospital for psyhical therapy....and he got appointment for 6months from than 😁😁😁 HAPPY DAYS!!! To cut this story short....in last 5months about 1000$ of his salary is given for his health insurance, and he didnt even use the hospital but he paid about 2000$ more to get a diagnose and tp start his therapy, which is still not done. So, for us croatians, when people in the states say we are lucky cuz we have free health insurance...its tragically funny. Cuz here, you can die before you even get your appointment in the hospital and you paied it in advance. The end of Story about croatian health insurance 🇭🇷😁🤘🏻

That medical insurance thing is a misconcenption; if you’re a citizen of croatia you do get medical but if you work it gets taken out of your paycheck for the universal healthcare depending on how much you earn. I have my own business and i pay around 500kn monthly. It’s like a tax here.

You really have to be brave to live here instead of US.. get ready to be waiting for months in couple of years when you get old in hospitals,get ready that an usual people-arent really important,its all about the ministers and their families. You should know that the 1.number one enemy is political party called HDZ,you also should know that people living with about 450-500 US dollars payment per month and about 100-200 pension payment after they retire,living here depends on what you doing for living,most of the people dont have money for basic stuff,but oh well if you found croatia as a good country to live in,best of luck.

In which US city do you only have to pay $1,200 for an apartment!? That must be in the south or mid-west where cost of living is cheaper. But where I'm from, that's the price of a cheap, older apartment in a small town about an hour's drive from NYC - and it may be in an area that's not the safest. And if you want a nicer, newer apartment in a safer area, you'll pay at least $1,600 for a one bedroom. If you need more rooms, it easily costs over $2,000.

Lets be real. In Croatia if you are not rich everything is expensive. So expensive. I am a standard person ( so neither rich or poor ) and let me tell you, i have to save some coin if i want to buy anything that is good in quality. Food is especially expensive, i literelly spend almost all the money on it. Horrible. The standard is too high for our salaries. Also, the health insuracne is not free, they take, i think, about 15% of your salary for health insurance. I would say people are leaving Croatia because they would rather live in foreign land like kings ( which most of them never do ) then live in their own country like their ancestors lived before them. They are all spoiled. Look at our country, it is beautiful! Insted of saving her we are destroying her form the inside. Fight for yours, that's what i would say to those people. You can find a good job here and live normaly but people want to live like they are royals. Pf.

In America on the rich get richer, with tax loopholes for the rich. Middle class Americans slave long hours, without benefits, 99% of Americans live on credit, and are debt ridden for life.. The Banks are the richest and will buy everything out soon....Americans go on vacation with their credit cards, and often it is the poorest who spend the most.
