Croatia, your safe, authentic lifestyle destination would be my tourism slogan for this country. While many people are emigrating from Croatia, there are so many reasons to live in Croatia, especially now with the remote work revolution. As I say in the video, it is that addictive mix of Absurdistan, with the best lifestyle in Europe and a sprinkling of Balkan insanity on top.
Having lived in Croatia for 20 years, I don't think I could live anywhere else. Here are 8 reasons why I think Croatia is the best place to live in Europe. Do you agree?

Dear mr Bradbury, thank you again for promoting my small, astonishingly beautiful and peaceful country! Yes, we Croats are embracing you as one of us and wish you long life, peace and abundance of hapiness! This is my nation of appreciative people, not prejudiced, not racist, not bigoted as many mainstream politics and media trying to implicate. This is a nation of martyrs, as entire Croatian land is brimming of mass graves filled with innocent civilians and soldiers right after second WW. Once again, thank you for choosing Croatia as a country to live in. You are blessed, along with your family! You will not regret your decision! One's experience of living in Croatia differs greatly depending on location. I moved to Zagreb two years ago and life has been extremely bittersweet. I spent 5 months in Dalmatia before living in Zagreb and to me, they're like two different countries. So region plays a huge part in how you might feel about Croatia as a foreigner.

Croatia is great place to live if you are at least middle class. If you are on median salary ( net 840E month), you are one bad day away from going into nasty debt. Also, there are not that many job opportunities outside major cities. Most good companies have their offices in Zagreb and even there, if you manage to get job in one of those, vertical mobility and chances for promotions are rare. Cohesive family structure is only thing that prevents many people from being completely broke.

@@PaulBradbury Remote work is possible for some people. Mainly design, IT, marketing, online sales, some counseling and similar jobs. But for wast majority of people, they rely on local economy and job markets. Croatia has very little industry. My background is in mechanical engineering, have lot of friends who are mechanical, electrical, civil, chemical and biochemical engineers and pool of good jobs and carrier opportunities is very slim, even in Zagreb. If you are in Lika or Slavonija, it's even worse. Also, everybody doesn't want or has capacity for being good or even decent entrepreneur. There is a good reason why lot's of young educated people left Croatia. Personally, left Zagreb for Munich and number of good jobs in industry is overwhelming here in Bavaria.

This is our main problem in Croatia, always trying to find a reason to be negative and pesimistic. What other area in the world could be compared with Bavaria? Dubai, Swiss, London, Florida, Singapur and few other areas and that's all. Croatia has never been a better place to live in history than today, I am pretty sure we never had some much opportunities if you know/want working than today. We have a "custom free" market of 500 millions People to feed, cheap and almost free credits litteraly given from EU central banks, empty fields and cheap Houses few km from Zagreb etc. Anyway, I know everyrthing is not perfect but where is it?!

Listening from Germany all of those reasons I said yes x 8. Man said everything and it's all true. Problem lies when you are young and you have no money... Than Croatia can be hard place to start, or support your family. Young families can be tired from stretching their incomes from month to month barely covering basic needs. Here in Germany its easy to live. Its like you played game on computer on very hard level and than you switched playing same game but on a easy level.

Over 35 years ago, my parents moved back to Croatia. They built a house. Getting builders to work took effort. They came in their own time, expected a cooked morning breakfast and lunch, with coffee during coffee breaks. My Mum was putting in a few hours a day just serving them! Then there was the 'under the table' approvals and deals needed, you had to grease a few hands to get anything done, especially if you had to get medical care. Might be different now, but when I visited a few years ago, I found the same tone going on. Mind you, same stuff goes on in the West. In Australia, you don't have to pay 'under the table', the theft and corruption is out in the open with the number of taxes, hidden taxes, fees, licences etc to every Tom, Dick & Harry. But, I was happiest in Croatia. People can still get together and chat. Community life has died down a bit, but that's what too much tech & internet does to society.

We might have more expats living here, but a lot of local people are moving out of croatia. If you dont have a house or an apartment and you have to rent you can be in a bad situation. Also chances of buying a house or an apartment are really low for an average person. The minimum wage is really low compared to a cost of living, but i understand that if you have some savings and are working for a foreing company Croatia is great.
@MK-ln6nb
@MK-ln6nb Год назад
Born & raised in Australia, it's the same here. Cost of housing for last couple of decades has been over the top and getting a deposit together almost impossible for average income earners unless parents help out. I think it's the same everywhere, the lower the income, the lower the standard of living. Somehow all my maternal family in Croatia, in the 80s, all owned their own homes, never wanted for anything. Shortly after the war in the 90s there are friends and relatives there who managed to buy a house somewhere, maybe not in the city, but close enough. Something I've not been able to do here.
@markmarku8169
@markmarku8169 Год назад
It turns out that Croatia and Romania have the highest percentage of real estate ownership in the EU, that is the only reason we are able to live well on such low salaries, with the realistic average being 800 euros a month.
@markmarku8169
@markmarku8169 Год назад
No one mentioned the fact that "As many as 91% of Croatians live in their own property, which is 21% above the European average, according to a survey by the EU's statistical office Eurostat". That is why so many Croatians are able to live on a measly salary of 750 euros per month. In countries like Switzerland, most people rent most of their lives, you have to be a millionaire there to buy a house. It is easier to buy a home in Germany but even there most people rent. If Croats had to live like the Germans and rent most of their lives, life would be much harder there. That's probably the main reason Croatia hasn't seen a large population exodus. Why else would so many Croatians stay in Croatia and complain that they can't buy much or save on a 750 euro salary. It is because most own their own homes.
@PaulBradbury
@PaulBradbury Год назад
Agree with you that the home ownership is not often factored in, but even with it factored in, it is hard here - just look at the recent euro to euro comparisons with Slovenia on prices and wages. I assume home ownership rates in Slovenia are similar (but don't know).

This is such a great video. The humor part made me laugh because it's so spot on. I'm a bit too honest at times but after leaving Balkans decades ago(lived in Croatia and Bosnia) i came to US and Canada and i've gotten tired of multiculturalism(i can notice 3-4 different languages at almost any place i go to), fast paced life mostly about work, identity politics all over including news, and lack of closeness(as you mentioned the communities back home were so tight). Amongst others like great food, humor, etc, that you alluded to. I am looking forward to moving back even though i'm also afraid that with so many foreigners moving there it'll ruin the nation long term(not talking about you but people from far different cultures, with different values, etc). I can already see some in the comments saying "we're not racist"...Why do people always need to point this out? Your country is unique and shouldn't welcome everyone, isn't that a normal thing? Do you want to open it up to everyone and become like USA where border isn't even taken seriously? Crime is so rampant even in the most "liberal" cities...People are strange these days and get pissed off when you tell them that in order to have a safe country you must have ways of keeping people of similar cultures together...There's plenty of land in this world and others can have their own nations and we can be good friends and neighbours and hopefully all live in peace(otherwise we'll be having conflict over religion, ethnicity, race, etc, again)...But anyways...
