Awesome footage of this mean looking machine, great sound too! Interesting design with that large radar dome above the rotors, never seen one like that before.
It´s not a radome.. there is just optics in there, called MMS (mast mounted sight), FLIR, laser, TV and so on. Which is a pretty interesting choice of placement, as it means a ton of vibration dampening needs to be engineered.
It is an armed scout helicopter, so the camera / FLIR system can pick up targets while the helicopter tries to stay as concealed as possible behind tress or hills for example. It can either relay those images to other combat units or engage those units itself without breaking cover.
@@MonostripeZebra The dampening and stabilization required to mount the MMS actually reduce overall vibration in the entire mast and rotor assembly, thus prolonging its life. When the MMS is removed, the service and inspection interval of the transmission mounts and other components are drastically reduced.
The Kiowa has less range and armament and a smaller cross section signature but other than that can carry the same things Apache can hellfire ,2.75 ff rockets 50cal depleted uranium tip ordanance
They don't carry DU rounds, and the Apache has a 30mm Bushmaster autocannon not a .50. When the US Army used them they carried standard and tracer .50cal rounds. DU is for punching armor, and the 58 Delta is not meant for that. I worked on this airframe for 7 years in the US Army.
