I use a $2 vertical swivel paper towel holder from Daiso and it does the job. Can’t see myself spending $25 - that’s the cost of a skein of fingering weight. Thanks for testing it out for us^^
As soon as I saw it I thought "oh, a paper towel holder." A thin dowel or chopstick through the cake that's then stuck through two sides of a basket also works.
Do you cake the yarn before you do this? I don’t have a yarn winder but was wondering if the paper towel holder works with skeins from the store ‘as is’ or not.
@@kathyd7506 I don’t have a winder either so I use the skein as it is. Of course this means I can’t use the center pull so I’ll have to knit or crochet from the outer strand but that’s not a big deal. Whenever I want to use a center pull, I put the whole skein in a small plastic bag and allow a little opening on one side at the top for the yarn to move freely through. This way even if the skein drops it doesn’t get dirty or unravel too much (for lace weight yarn or those that unravel too easily). If you’re working with two or more strands at the same time the best option is to put them in an organizing tray/caddy with the vents on the side so you can thread as many skeins through the individual gaps. That way you can work with as many as 7 or more colors at a time without getting tangled. ^^
I’m not sure. I think it’s cool and it visibly does a good job, but I think I’d be just as happy with a small skein/cake/donut in a yarn bowl. I love that I can use a yarn bowl on my desk, coffee table, bed, couch, wherever, and I just don’t see that happening with the yarn Jeanie.
I don't see how this would take up any more space than a yarn bowl... I'd love to use skiens w/o having to wind a ball to use from outside which you have to do with bowls🙂
This is like yarn through butter! I had my guy make something similar, and you wouldn’t believe how it feels. It’s like the yarn is floating, without any pulling or drag of any kind.
Haha, this was designed & is manufactured fairly locally to me in the UK. If you're not getting a D&S Components one, then it's a knock off. Such a simple but genius solution. They sold like hot cakes at the yarn shop I worked at 😊
I love my Wool Jeanie. No winding, no yarn vomit, no searching for a center pull, no tugging at an outter pull. I got it from Amazon for 20 dollars. I love the portability of the Jeanie. I can leave my gifted, expensive yarn bowl at home now.
I watched your video shortly before I decided to put in an order for one of these. It just came today. I am totally delighted with mine! I do notice that sometimes the spindle will start to spin a little too fast. I am just using prewound cakes of yarn. I wanted to share how I slowed down the runaway spin. I have some small plastic coated clips that I purchased at the Dollar Tree. I clipped one to the top of the metal stem above the spindle. I fed my yarn (worsted) through the opening in the inside back of the clip. This does not prevent the free flow of the yarn. It just slows the unraveling speed while you are using it. I wish I could show you a photo of how I rigged mine up, but this sure works for me. 🤗💗
Great review, Toni! I would try it but as it is plastic, I wouldn't buy it as it doesn't seem substantial enough to not break. My biggest concern was that the yarn would be too heavy to hold large cakes/skeins, not necessarily in a yardage perspective but in the chunky, bulky sense. Overall, I wouldn't have one because of space. The last thing I have is room to place another gadget, especially when I'm perfectly happy with pulling my yarn as needed when it's sitting in my yarn bowl (aka, one of mom's serving bowls, lol). I've had two of them for, um... 7? years. Had to get them shipped from the UK because there were no US sources at all. I needed two because I was doing a lot of stranded knitting at the time. Neither of mine are broken at all--they both look brand new. They are advertised as being able to hold 200 g but I've put 300 g on them without any problems. At least in my experience, placement is not all that fussy. Depending on where I am working, I've placed it well above my working level to well below and it makes no difference at all. I've never had the spindle fly off the stand, either. If the spindle starts rotating too fast, the yarn just starts passing under the spindle (you could see it doing so in Toni's video), no big deal.
I bought one several months ago and use it everyday. Love it. I recommend get the extra shaft too. Great for when using more than one yarn color in project. Can't wait to see if you like it.
A friend gifted me one of these after I saw a video online. I’m absolutely in love with it (but you are right, colors would be nice). Being confined in a hospital having to have staff rescue my yarn every time it fell off the bed was embarrassing. With the wool Jeanie it stays put on my tray table and makes crocheting so much more relaxing.

I can see how this item would be helpful to people, but I crochet in public and knit in public too much. I once brought a ceramic yarn bowl with me to a SnB, and that was pain enough (I crocheted myself some yarn bowls since for travel).
Thank you Toni for your channel. You are the first RU-vidr That I've come across that has correctly called the new numbering system for yarn sizes, "Categories". Thank you for your depth of knowledge and your pleasant manner. I know I wouldn't purchase this as it is made of plastic and metal. Plastics take from 300 to 800 years to bio-degrade into micro particle which are still harmful to wildlife. Wooden ones, made from at least the 40's onward are just as effective and are eco-conscious. At $25 there is someone who is making an enormous profit. More power to them if people buy the product. At $25 it is about $20 above my budget. Over all, a well done and honest review. Thank you and Brava!
I got one of these a few weeks ago. BEST THING EVER. I always center pull skeins and cakes and thought I was happy... nope nope nope. I haven't stopped using it since I got it. I only regret waiting so long to order it. I got a 2nd one and I plan on getting a bunch of spare spools for color-work. It's a must try!
Hi I would like to try that. I've been crocheting for 7 years and I always have problems with my yarn falling on the floor and the strings of yarn would get caught in my wheelchair ♿️ . It's so frustrating at times. But I'm definitely going to get a yarn Genie. Thanks for sharing 🥰💞
I find that working from the center end of the yarn helps to stop the yarn from jumping around as well. You keep the wrap of the skein on and just pull out the end in the middle part and then it unwraps as you go as well.
I bought a fake in Aliexpress and is a must for me works fantastic!!! I have tried bowls wooden ones etc. nothing but a waste of money and patience, but this is the best gadget I have ever bought smooth, with no tension just easy to put the yarn in a store wound or cake magnet it up and BOOM!!! no issues 🙌🧡🧡🧡🧡
Mine just arrived yesterday and I am so in love! My only regret is that I didn’t order a second needle for another color - honestly it’s not that hard to just swap the yarn out but for frequent color changes it would be nice so I’ll probably order one when they’re back in stock. I’ve tried mine both at my desk and on the couch. It worked well with both but I am not as close to it on the couch and that does seem to work better in that I don’t get any of the wild spinning I got a couple of times at my desk. Some of that might’ve just been me readjusting to not needing to pull my yarn free. I have some chronic pain issues and I think this will help me be able to crochet longer before I need a break that I’m not having that extra pulling motion needed.
I got one of these a few weeks ago and I'm obsessed with it. I keep waiting for the awesomeness to wear off and for it to become another dust gatherer, but that's not happening any time soon. The other day I had three separate cakes on it for color changes and it held up fine, it must have a super strong magnet! Love not having to find the center or tug my yarn constantly.

I LOVE this gadget! What a difference it makes with feeding my yarn while I'm crocheting/knitting. No more tugging or getting stuck! Those bowls and cheapy towel holders just don't hold a candle to this!!
*FOR LEFT-HANDERS* - this is a must have! I find that I can more easily use just about any yarn now without it twisting up in the wrong direction. And for $12 I bought extra spindles for when I have a couple of projects going at the same time. I am careful not to leave it connected magnetically all the time as directed. Also, this thing has fallen off the table more times than I can count and it doesn't break. Now is it perfect??? Of course not. But for 90% of my projects - It's always being used! Much love to TL for turning me onto this clever device.
I'm a complete gadget hound! I wound up my skein of yarn using a winder and just placed the cake on the Wool Jeanie. I LOVE it. It's really not the same as pulling the yarn from a dowel or paper towel holder (which I tried). This effortlessly turns with the help of the magnetic tip and you don't have to think about pulling or untangling yarn. You can keep knitting until the yarn is gone or you've tired yourself out. I wanted to mention that the Jeanie recommends using a skein or ball up to 200g but the yarn I'm currently using is a 225g skein and it's no problem at all. I also like that you can "park" the ball to the base when you put it away or one of your cats discovers how nicely it goes round and round.
I used this video as a guide to put mine together and found the disc the yarn sits on should be cone side up. now that I've turned it around it definitely makes a difference. 😁

I think this could absolutely help. There's a lot of potential tension that comes from yarn feeding from the ball, and this manages that quite well. Hope you like it!

I love your reviews, Toni! You've been so helpful as I've been dipping my toes into crochet 🙂. I've been a knitter for years, and one thing I noticed right away about the design of this spindle is the way it swings like a pendulum. If you knit continental, it probably wouldn't be a big deal, but as a "thrower," that swing would have this gadget back in the box in about five minutes for me lol. I wonder if there's a similar difference in crochet styles among different people -- a "yarn forward" vs. a "hook forward" approach, so to speak?
I'm pretty content with my yarn bowl, but I'm totally with you on making it more aesthetically pleasing. I would definitely want one if it was wooden or a pretty resin maybe to match my Furls hooks. I know that would have to be more expensive, but I think people would pay a price similar to a high end hook or swift. Maybe they should partner.... I think so!

I actually bought a yarn winder, an adhesive toilet paper holder and about 10 plumbing pipes with small flanges. We cut the flanges to match the winder's spindle notches. The toilet paper holder is put on the wall vertically where I crochet (with the spindle facing upward). I tape the beginning end to the pipes and then wind the yarn onto them so they are in cake shape. I can then just swap out the pipes on the tp holder (with the flange at the top). It's easy, it's fast and no tangling.
I have seen it before am yes I would try the Jennie as soon as I can afford it. It would be perfect for me . Thank you so very much for trying it out and giving your honest opinion.
I'm honestly inclined to agree with the people saying a paper towel holder would be just as good 😅 I mostly use dollar tree bins/clearance Halloween candy containers because they work as a ball holder and I can put my whole project in there when I'm not working on it (I'm also in the minority in that I usually use hand wound balls lol)

Just started using my Wool Jeanie this past weekend and L.O.V.E. it! I was getting really frustrated before having to pull lengths of yarn, which interrupted the flow of my work. With Wool Jeanie, that is no longer an issue!

as a fast crocheter, I think the issue you had halfway the testing is due to the fact that the inertia makes the rod bounce back and forth while you pull the yarn in one direction only, and that movement is slower than yours, which is not ideal. I've noticed it on myself using similar tools before: I find that I have to slow down to accommodate the tool's pace, if I make sense, and I don't really like it. but I can see how this item can be appealing, and even helpful, for a beginner.
I think you're absolutely right. My crochet movements when I pull the yarn just aren't conducive to this tool right now. If I'm going a little slower, it would likely work better.
Great review! Not for everyone, for sure. I'm a center pull kinda guy. Wind up a cake, throw a bit of netting around it, and you have a perfect setup. One concern I had was the number of pieces you had to put together. Too many points of failure for me and MG anxiety. A yarn bowl would be better to hold my cake. Also, subbed! Definitely going to be supporting another crafty channel!

Second, I would lose one of those pieces for sure. I have a wooden spindle that I use and LOVE. It's similar in design to the one you showed in the video and it works great...and it doesn't separate...so I don't worry about losing it. As always -- great content. Actually yes, I would try this product. I immediately thought about how useful it would be to stack 2 different colors/types of yarn (like mohair & something). I think this could work greatly

I’m using my wool Jeanie while watching your review. I love mine… I don’t know if anyone else has mentioned it, but you’ve got the bottom plate on the spindle upside down. The cone shaped side should be on the top & the flat side on the bottom.
I purchased one of these a number of years ago for a friend who hates pulling yarn from the center of a ball (hates it with the fiery passion of 7 burning suns, ha!)....and he LOVES it! :-)
I have had one of these for a few years. It does work and well for the right kind of work. Crochet and knitting works however a knitting machine Addi or Sentro etc does not work so well. Best to cake the yarn first. Sometimes it pulls faster than I need but it does not pull too much unless you crochet too fast. It does make a difference on the tension as it does not stop the yarn going to your hook. It is better than having a ball of yarn in a bowl. It also encourages making your use of tension by yourself. So many crocheters on you tube do not use tension or the hooks correct.stitch size.
Loved the wool Jeanie. I wished you had this before I went to buy them at Amazon and it’s in UK. I paid double the price however it made my crochet easier.
Great review. I got a yarn holder off of eBay about 3 months ago works great for 19.00. It takes small or large cakes/skeins. I found that if you crochet or pull at a very fast pace, the yarn will tug/catch at the bottom. But I can deal with that. It beats having to continually tug on my skein from a project box or bowl. I like that it works like the lazy susan style yarn holders but since it is suspended from the top the pooling thread doesn’t wrap around the base and get caught. Definitely going on my wish list.
I have three of these and I love them, especially if you are using more than one colour. Would definately recommend. This is a lovely small business in the UK with great customer services. I got mine from Amazon. I even bought one for my fellow crafter.
Hi, I am not convinced about this product, because I think when we knit, the yarn unrolls too fast, if we have a big ball yarn. The yarn is vertically and I prefer horizontally. Finally I bought it... lol and I am satisfied
Great review. You keep a good pace and are interested in this item. Love mine. I hoped to use it for my csm, but no go. The backspin screws with the tension. For handknitting it is wonderful. My son made me a bunch of spindles and I glued metal balls to the top for extra spindles. Works great! Note: you can get the thingverse 3d pattern for free and print your own. Or use cardboard cones and glue a metal marble. I used mine to hold a ball of new yarn and wound it into a cake. That sucker spins like a dervis. I did have to start slow and speed up or it reverses and causes the problems you are getting.
I love the Wool Genie. I currently have one on my craft table and have probably purchased about 8 of them. When I do yarn swaps, I love including one in my swap box.
