No one knows for sure, but some researchers believe it either came from Arabia or indigenous south Americans, the oldest form of needle work that could be considered crochet is from ancient china, as far as we know.
Crochet as we know it in the modern day was created around the 15th to 17th century. It is important to note that although the first published crochet pattern emerged in 1824, there is substantial evidence to point to crochet being taught word of mouth rather than written. In the 19th century there was a huge rise in crochet. It was mainly used in a form now known as Irish Crochet, which takes the normal needle and bobbin lacework, and simplifies it down to really intricate crochet. Crochet was given a tremendous boost by Mlle. Riego de la Branchardiere, who was best known for her ability to take old-style needle and bobbin lace designs and turn them into crochet patterns that could easily be duplicated. She published many pattern books so that millions of women could begin to copy her designs. The rise in popularity did not end there and it continued throughout the 20th century. In the early 1900s it was used to make practical things like afghans and potholders along with some simple garments and rugs. It was during this time that potholders made their first appearance and became a staple of the crocheter’s repertoire. It was during this time that many types of yarn also came with small pattern samples and crochet guides. It didn't stop there it continued in popularity all the way through the 1960s and 70s where it was seen as a more free type of expression, especially in terms of clothes.
I watch a lot of crochet tutorials and I have to say, your instructions, the speed and delivery and description, are perfect! Thank you so much for sharing!!!
Ive been struggling to find someone who makes clear Instructions while I try to expand my skills and you have truly led the way. Thank you so much, you’ve saved me so much time.
New subscriber - I use to crochet and just had emergency Spinal surgery with fusion so I am down for 10-12 weeks & saw this beautiful 🌻 pattern and want to start crocheting once again to give gifts to loved ones and for us. Thank you and to ROOTS & REFUGE you-tube channel for mentioning you and putting your link in her description. God bless you 🙏 ❤️
Thank you so much for subscribing, it is lovely to have you here. I hope your recovery is going well and that you enjoy making this blanket - it is a lovely one! 😃🌻
I absolute love this pattern. You are such an excellent teacher. I am really glad I found you. I have been crocheting for over 60 years but since the pandemic started and I had to quit working I have learned so much, I am 73 so old doggies can learn new tricks. A happy crocheting lady in the USA. Thank you!❤️🤗
This is one of the sunflower square tutorial I've watched. I've watched several others just for my square come out uneven and "wavy" because it was completely flat. I have no idea why in the tutorial theirs came out flat while mine didn't, i know i was following the directions accurately because i focused on every detail to make it perfect. All that trying discouraged me to stopping crochet for a month until i finally got the courage to come back at it and i found your video. This video not only helped me make a proper flat square it also gave me back the courage to pursue crochet. Thank you thank you thank you, your work is very much appreciated.
Thanks for the help with puff stitches as I didn't know how. We all start somewhere with everything in life. Always good to learn something new...I'm enjoying crochet here in South Africa.
Omg. Finally a tutorial I can follow 😭😭 literally started learning less than a week ago and I now have one of these sunburst squares! Going to make a blanket :) thank you SO much!!!!
Hello Robin, I absolutely love the patterns you have posted a tutorial but this is my favorite and your voice is so easy to follow and soothing to hear as I follow the tutorial video. Thank you for your yarn creations . Love it ! God bless
15:35 "Crush it flat." I always feel compelled to do this with the virus blanket 😂 There's just something wonky about working projects in the round when they have a bunch of stitches at the start. Always turns out fine.
You are amazing, everything you do whatever it is, you show your followers every little detail and this really is so helpful. The simplistic instruction, when we are learning to crochet can be a massive problem, but you think of everything. I really love crocheting and you have opened the door for me to do lots more. Thankyou 😊
Thank you so much for this awesome tutorial! I am a beginner and a visual learner. I was able to successfully complete my very first granny square by following your tutorial! 💖
i've been into crochet for just some month, and I managed to creat just a top. Now I want to work on a cardigan done with these and I was disperate because I never found a clear tutorial (for anything). But deam this is so clear and well done, I almost remember it by heart just watching it one time! Thank you a lot!

You are a fabulous teacher Robin, and I couldn't believe how easy you made this look. I watched this on youtube on my television and then used my tablet to LIKE it and save to my Favourites list. I'm definitely going to watch the other link also. Thankyou so much for sharing your wonderful gift. By tbe way I absolutely loved watching you and your hubby LIVE a couple of months ago, and I really hope you do another one sometime in tbe future. You are breath of fresh air Robin. Big hugs from Jenny in Tasmania ❤
Fantastico, Robin! I did 5 rounds before the squared one! And it worked at the same! I thought to have to add stiches in somewhere but I didn't have to! And the colors where wonderful: green, yellow, orante, light green and punk, then amaranto in the last round! 💚💛🧡💚🩷💜
@@HookedbyRobin Oh yess! soo much, I'm still crocheting other granny squares! I wanna do my first top!! 😍 maybe you have this project to show? :) it would be really amazing, otherwise I can only follow my fantasy! ahahah!
Love this square!..normally not a fan of grannies, but love the more solid ones...just don😑’t care for the holes in most Granny squares...this so cute!..I can see it in Pennsylvania Dutch colors.....
you are an amazing teacher! I'm still very new to crocheting and yet your tutorial was by far the easiest Ive tried to follow along with. Thank you for your amazing content!
Hello 👋 Robin! Omg 😱 I’m in love with this square! I love sunflowers 🌻 and although I’ve seen other sunflower 🌻 square tutorials I know I will be able to do it with your tutorial! Thank you so much! You are the best teacher I absolutely love you and all you do for us my sweet sweet friend!
Excellent tutorial, thank you so much. Just one question, I'm fairly new to crochet and I made a few of these squares following your tutorial and they turned out great. However I think I might have messed up a bit because my square , the bit where I did the 3 hdc, there's a tiny bit of a dip. Is that normal? Can I do 3 dc's to make sure there's no dip and the square is a square without the dip?
I love your teaching technique. I’ve been crocheting for many years but you have taught me so much . Do you have any videos on how to crochet Easter bunny placemats? Thanks! 🌸
I love all your tutorials especially this sunflower one, I am having trouble with my straight side it has a little curve. What am I doing wrong. I follow this tutorial step by step.😢
Thank you! What a great and informative video, you explain and show it so well! And now I'm thinking, could you also do this with 8 or 32 or even bigger, if you just make the middle chain smaller or larger as well?
I absolutely love this and I already have sunflower 🌻 yarn colors so this will be on my to do list 🤗🥰 I also have to say your nail polish is very pretty, what brand and color polish is it? I absolutely love your videos 🥰🙏🏻 thank you for sharing
Hi Jose, I used a 6mm hook with the cygnet chunky yarn. I always say use whichever hook size is recommended on your chosen yarn ball. I hope that helps.😃🧶
I know you posted this video a few months ago, but I was just wondering if there's any reason you make a ch 4 loop instead of a magic circle to start? Just curious, because you end up using the ch 4 loop kinda like a magic circle. Thank you so much for the lovely tutorial! :)
I used a ch4 as I made the squares for a cardigan so needed to be triple sure they wouldn't come undone after multiple washes etc - you are more than welcome to use a magic circle instead tho! The double magic circle might be a tad more secure for these squares purely because of the sheer amount of stitches going into the ring: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bvQsM7VzRMo.html
