...How do you consider Donkey Kong Country dark? the only time I thought K Rool was threatening was in the opening of DK 64 and that was only in the opening cutscene.
@@jeremyknight9980 -Somber/suspenseful-at-times music -Villain uses a giant gun in one game, some others use swords -Atmospheric locations like abandoned factories, medieval castles, e.t.c. It's a different type of dark but it's also not what you'd conventionally except from a wacky 2D platformer in the Mario universe
@@supermakermatic2111 Oh, that makes sense. Even Mario has went that dark so yeah I'll agree with you on that. the problem with Sonic is that there's an edge to the series and there was a time where they did get it right.
the difference is that sonic was always like "modern sonic" - if you looked at japanese material and the actual games, that is. have you forgot how sonic 2's super forms are from dragon ball? or how sonic 3's special stages are also just a giant dragon ball reference? or the main implications of sonic 3's hidden palace prophecy that was also explained in it's manual? or how we can see from prototypes of sonic 1, spring yard zone was originally a colorful sparkling zone? they could have kept it as the colorful neon zone, but yet they chose to tone it down, make it more "real" and dark-colored, with neon lights being much less of a focus. or how marble zone originally had ufo's? and yet, they removed them entirely - making it feel more like an actual temple. or how sonic cd's bad futures were made to specifically use darker colors and intentionally use unique versions of objects that are destroyed? it only makes the game easier, as damaged enemies attack worse, and yet, they still did it. even sonic 2, the game that had it's entire original storyline and almost half of the zones cut from it, still has some moments like that - wing fortress, death egg. what are those? why did sonic 2's design documents specifically specify things like "medieval era" and other things? why did sonic rpg, a sega saturn game that began development a short while after sonic 3, with all of sonic's original creators working on it, become sonic adventure? why did sonic adventure get approved by those same creators and still is? why does the creature from sonic 3's japanese manual have so much connection to the main antagonist of sonic adventure? why does sonic adventure 2's story tie so much into the aforomentioned sonic 3 hidden palace prophecy? though, everything after sa2 i understand - most of sonic's creators were slowly starting to leave after sonic adventure 2 was released, and starting with sonic heroes, everything just starts making no sense and being either overly dark or overly stupid, and in both cases it has nothing to do with what sonic 1 to sonic adventure 2 had going for them.
Cacophony: a mixture of unpleasant sounds... pretty right... it somehows sounds unpleasnt, and yet I imagine they captured the croc's death roll with the splashing of water how it would sound....
It's strange because even though it's meant to be unpleasant, I can't help but love the sort of groove of it. Even replaying the game 20 years on and getting to K.Rool it's like right you son of a bitch time to get DK back, then this song just lays down the perfect tone and usage of instruments - focus, anger/offence but with this rhythm going through it all that keeps it all in one piece of tension, the toll of the battle, dodging those barrels, the suspense, son you're fighting bloody KRool mate, it even says it in the guys name, KRuel, so you better keep your wits about you, but you aint gunna go down without a fight, you aint gunna leave without DK! That's what I get from this song man, it's beautiful. Then you get DK in front of you tied up, the noise over the music, it's like yeah one more cannon ball you scum and you're in the water.
I love in the first game, K Rool is angry cause he wants some of DK's bananas, then in the second game, he gets an entire island, kidnaps DK, and SHOOTS HIM WITH A GUN. Holy cow the games escalated quickly. We go from someone who wants bananas, to that same person with a gun, who isn't afraid to shoot you. That's what I loved about classic DK games. They need to bring K Rool back in a main line DK game.
Have you seen the 'decline of K. Rool' video too? It's one of the best insights into a video game villain I've ever seen, and there's definitely a couple more villains deserving of such a video!
KitsuneDzelda I get the comment, and it kinda sucks that it has to be that way, but now I can’t take the name Bowser seriously considering he has the name of Mario’s villain.
I personally think the final boss in DKC3 was worse than the regular final boss in this game. As long as you got the patterns for this boss, it's not that bad. Meanwhile, the secret final boss in this game... That's without a doubt, hard. Good thing King K. Rool instantly gets defeated if you throw the cannonball in his blunderbuss as he's vacuuming.

Damn this boss was so tough! I probably died more to it than any other level in the game. And the scary thing is, I haven’t even unlocked the second fight yet! I fear for my sanity.
