From the Film Australia Collection. Made by the National Film Board 1949. Directed by Lee Robinson. In the estuaries and lagoons of the Northern Territory, freshwater and saltwater crocodile are hunted for their hides by both Indigenous and non-Indigenous hunters. This film shows Aboriginal people using age-old hunting techniques to land crocs either for food or for skins. The methods employed by the professional hunters, who earn as much as 3000 pounds during the season, are also depicted, followed by a brief look at how the hides are skinned and prepared before being transported to the leather factories of Sydney and Melbourne.

The aborigines are without a doubt some of the gutsiest toughest people I’ve ever seen. Living in one of the most dangerous countrysides in the world. Generations and generations of surviving off the land and still existing today. You cannot help but admire their customs and traditions. Very great video

I doubt the men in the water were in too much danger then. The "gators" ( Salties) as you can see, were hunted to the point of almost oblivion and were very shy. I was born in the Northern Territory and went back in 1968 for six weeks. We swam and fished in the Katherine River in many places, without the slightest fear, as well as other creeks etc.. The Salties were as far from man as they could get, way back in the remote areas. Then they became protected and on another visit in 2008 , I wasn't game to go near the water , as the "Snapping Handbags" as my brother calls them, are just everywhere! Loved the film, and the dug out canoe , and watching the Aboriginal men , with their tribal scars, go about things. Saltwater Crocs are now right down the east coast of Australia, and about 100 miles north of Brisbane. It will be exciting to watch when they finally make the northern surf beaches. It'll be "Save the women and kids, follow me"!!!

Same thing in the United States with alligators. There is a point where back in the 60s in the State of Florida there's only estimated to be a thousand individual alligators, now in the State of Florida alone there are over 1 million!!; But honestly every year at least a few people get eaten. Usually women walking their dogs

We were still doing that in the late 70's in the Kimberley, (unofficially of course). The skins were sold to the Chinese crewmen of the Bakke ships who came to pickup processed beef from the Wyndham meat works. They apparently sold them in Hong Kong.

My grandfather was a croc shooter and taxidermist. I still have a 6 foot and a 3 foot crock he did after their last trip in 1974. I've got a "kuyu", a type of harpoon head he made. Nowadays there are crocks everywhere, the days when we could swim pretty much anywhere are well and truely over.

@gregoryross.303
@gregoryross.303 3 года назад
@@dcrog69 Those trucks were both Fords and Chevs, all were 4 x 4, and were built in the USA for the Allied militaries during WWII, and were commonly referred to as 'puddle-jumpers". In 1970, I went halves with a mate in a used one in Christchurch, New Zealand. It was a faultless Chev, with only 43,000 miles on it. I recall we paid $600 for it. We used it for wild venison recovery, as the truck was ideal for fording deep NZ glacial rivers where the deer live and you could load about 30 deer carcasses onto it. Ours still had the machine-gun mount on its roof and a trap door on the cab so the passenger could pop open the trap door and man the machine gun in a hurry if they came under attack. After the war ended you could buy one of these trucks for a song, some as new, and many went to Australia and New Zealand to work on remote sheep stations. They can carry quite a few tons, much much more than a Landrover can haul. They are low-geared, and top speed of ours on the open road was around 40mph. And very thirsty on gas. During the war, something like 1.5 miilion Jeeps were built for the Allied military, and you could pick one of those up after the war for next to nothing, in new condition.

Let's have some sanity and common sense. Put people before crocodiles. Cull the crocodiles humanely and let's get back to enjoying our waterways without the risks resulting from the senseless "conservation-at-any-cost" attitude of the bleeding-hearts who are happy to see the country be overrun by dangerous reptiles. It was once safe to go for a swim in our beautiful rivers, but not anymore, and crocodiles were never at risk of extinction.

There were less than 3000 crocs in Australia in 74, 4 more years of hunting they’d be eradicated Same as the Saltie is in Vietnam Cambodia laos Thailand & Burma, from a population of 200,000 before the country started commercial hunting in the 30s, the Northern rivers of Australia are home of the crocodile and not for people to be prancing around in you’ve got swimming baths for that & water world , nothing stopping you from having a dip in the Mary river though ….

There's a documentary about an Outback postman , from recollection it called ' Back of beyond ' . The route was Adelaide to Birdsville . Basically a story of the struggles en route , features similar vehicles . There was a book published as well . I'm sure you would enjoy both .
