We cycle for 5 days between Nipigon, Ontario, and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario along the north shore of Lake Superior. This section of our cross-canada cycle adventure covers 715 kms. This took place all on Hwy 17 which is part of the Trans-Canada Hwy. It was marvelous in parts and hellish when the shoulder disappeared. Not for the faint of heart.

Thanks for the videos, I came back on the 15th of july from my cross country trip. We rode on the same day to Cranbrook but we did not see each other. I love watching the places that I've been and it's still fresh in my memory. Have a safe trip!

Thanks for the great video. It brought back memories of my trip around Lake Superior in the early 1980s. Black flies, hills and no shoulder with heavy truck traffic nearly the entire way. I'm glad you made it safely.

Thanks...we were quite relieved to get to SSM, too.

I’ve often heard horror stories of Hwy 17 in that area and your video confirms it. It definitely looked unpleasant confirming my reluctance to cross Canada. Chapeau on your perseverance.

To be fair, 95% of it was good to very good. Only 10km was truly awful. It needs to be repaired and widened before someone gets killed.

You made it!! Lake Superior looked beautiful but the trucks on 17 were brutal. I think the sign on the road helped 😂.

What a scary highway! I refuse to ride the 1 West of Golden, but this is another level. Feels like it hasn’t been updated since the 60s! At least the hills break up the continuous line of trees. Hopefully you guys have outrun the heat and smoke, it’s getting real bad out west, 30+ and smells like a bonfire in Calgary. Congratulations on surviving the bush, looks like you’ll be rolling through farmland again soon enough!

Thanks! We were worried about smoke but fires haven't affected us yet. We are following the tragic Jasper fires and hundreds in BC. Near our home, tornadoes are the constant summer concern now. We are headed that way... :/

Well, at least I know what I'm getting into in a few days when I leave nipigon on the same route...won't stop me from riding the same route but I'll know that it passes and to get off 17 ASAP near Sault STE Marie! Thank you for sharing this!

We took 5th line east (toward the KOA) just before SSM. It doesn't avoid the worst of it but it gets you off Hwy 17 as you get into town. The worst section was right after crossing the Goulais River. If we had known we would have taken the 552 east (north of the Timberland General Store) and rejoined Hwy 17 at Heyden. That avoids the worst. It is still a stressful ride...best done in light winds and dry conditions. Enjoy the good 95% of the ride, it is gorgeous country!

Throwing away half of your coffee to get away from the black flies... 😮 "They're a-swimmin' in the soup, they're swimmin' in the tea The devil take the black flies, let me be".

😂 I was certainly thinking about that song a few times. Strangely bugs haven't been an issue at all since Schreiber. Magically gone!

I did that ride three years ago. I had to show by E-mail, my vaccination record card to the folks at Arrive Can. Then in the Grand Marais public library go on line and announce what day and time I would be crossing the border. I hit the north shore of MN on memorial day weekend. MN state parks have a policy of no turn away for those who arrive under their own power. As it happened the weather was so awful, rain, wind and low temperatures. People were canceling their bookings for the campsites and I got to have my pick of spots to camp. Took me about thirty days to ride from Saint Paul MN to the north shore , Sault Ste Marie and back across WI. I suffered a kind of PTSD from all the hills. Grinding up in my lowest granny gear, then screamer down hill and start up the next one .I wonder if you counted the hills on from Nipigon. I lost track. I also lost about 25 pounds body weight down to 270. The trucks (transports) were really nice to me. The only bad truck encounter was between Thunder Bay and Nipigon. I had a semi pass a line of trucks while I was in the oncoming lane with a very loose shoulder that I would have crashed my rig on. I went from Provincial Park to Provincial Park after Nipigon. I erred in not resupplying in Nipigon, I got to Terrace Bay on a Sunday and the only grocery store in town was closed. I stayed at Rainbow falls, Neys, White lake, Obatanga, Rabbit Blanket, Agawa Bay and Pancake Bay. Obatanga was officially closed and I had to haul my rig over the barricades to get in. I set up at the entry station in the firewood shack. I had my dinner and took a walk further in and came upon a couple of cyclist's from France. (not Quebec) As I found out later from a west bound cyclist just out side of Sault Ste Marie, there are camper cabins farther back in the park I could have stayed in. As it was, the mosquitos were epic! Then, after Sault Ste Marie it was on to the US and back across Wi. I had to get back home for a Medical appointment and family reunion. Every hill in MI and WI got cursed at. LOL I only saw one moose, a dead one in the ditch. The Parks Canada folks had shipping pallets strewn in lines along the roads and nearby areas to keep the moose from crossing the roads kind of like cattle guards in ranch lands areas. When I saw them there for the first time I thought that maybe there was an uncleaned up truck wreck there. The same Park Ranger who told me I could, (probably get away with staying a night at Obatanga) told me about the experiment with the Pallets. Anyway, your trip is amazing and I wish you safe travels. I always say, "May the wind at your back always smell like home".

Wow! That is an epic journey. Sounds like a memorable trip! The Obatanga park is still barricaded...wish we had known of the cabins. lol I don't know about the winds smelling like home but today's ride LOOKED like home. Instant change in topography on this side of The Soo. Amazing!

@@Shannon_Marco_Travel I was pulling a BoB trailer with a solar panel to charge the batteries for my C-Pap. The wind at the back is kind of a pun on leaving town with a tailwind and the fact that every town has some kind of odor that reminds a person f of their home.

I am very happy to see this video. But I was getting nervous just watching. Some scary sections. I used to drive from southern Ontario to Thunder Bay. The northern route is said to be shorter and very flat but few scenic views. I'm glad to be retired from that crazy traffic. Thanks for sharing. Best wishes along your way.

17 from Mattawa to Deep river is the worst section. We biked 1/2 of it in the gravel! Yikes!!!
