In this Haven Knox-Johnston Cross Channel Adventure, John and his team visit Roscoff, known for its picturesque architecture and also as the car ferry port and the departure point for Breton agricultural produce. A ferry port might seem an unusual destination for a cross channel adventure, however, just 5-minutes away from the Ferry port is the brand new Bloscon Marina that aims to be the top marina on the Brittany coast, offering every facility a boat owner could possibly need.
Roscoff offers a wonderful selection of places to eat and to explore the best French cuisine, whilst the town centre has a constant buzz created by locals and visitors. If, like many, you are also looking to stock up on French wine, Roscoff is the perfect place to do this affordably.
A little further away, Saint Pol de Leon, known for its 13th century cathedral has all the atmosphere and charm of a Brittany town - but without the hustle and bustle of the ferry traffic.
Just a few nautical miles east of Roscoff is the town of Morlaix, which lies in a deep valley 8 miles up tidal river and through lock gates. One of the appeals of Morlaix is that all the facilities are within easy walking distance, making it popular with young visiting families. The river runs dry during low tides in this area, so it is vital to research the best times to visit, however once inside, mooring is easy in a peaceful setting.

There is more to Roscoff / St Pol / Morlaix than excellent seafood & cheap wine supplies. Coreff is the local brewed ales, the veggies grown in the fields fertilized by seaweed and of course the famous onions, most of the onion johnnies came from here. Buckwheat crepes are everywhere for a sweet or savoury snack. We always have Breton madeline cakes on board & at home. Between 1975 & 2003 I visited the area from my Plymouth home, be it weekends by foot passage or cycling & motoring further afield. Finally in 2003 we went for it and moved inland from La Rochelle.
