What isn’t explained in this documentary is the reason for the shutdown. They figured out that the water that supplies south Florida doesn’t come from rain fall but instead from the interconnecting fresh water aquifers that supplies south Florida. The more they dug the more water they compromised and shutoff water flow southwards. It’s a fact, I’m a resident born and raised in Levy county. If you are from around here you would know that is the answer.
At least there were only a handful of traitors in the GOP back then. The wholesale takeover by the nazi half-wit wing has ruined Florida far more than the ill conceived canal would have.
Yes, you can be sure if this project was started by liberal democrats, it was never intended to be finished, it was intended to drain the taxpayers' wallets and feed the liberal special interest. I am sure it was just another liberal pork belly project. 🤣
The dam should be dismantled, and any existing canal returned to a natural state. Florida's water, wildlife, tourism, sealife and beaches depends on the integrity of the ecosystem. Projects like this destroy the ecosystem. The importance of the ecosystem isn't about "tree hugging", it's about the economic viability of Florida!!
@@Artoconnell the only thing it stops flooding of is wetlands lol its purpose was to be part of the canal not "stop flooding" which damns never do well anyways they concentrate water in a repository and increase flooding chance upstream of damn
These assholes fucked up the Oklawaha river, which was like going back millions of years and time if you’ve ever been on that river! I spent many a day floating that river back in the 60s. I will be forever pissed at what they did to that part of Florida.🙏
That river is beautiful. Especially the parts they left the hell alone. My first time there it felt like I went back to the beginning of prehistoric time. Other trips I got to see those ugly man made channel cuts. I'd like to see it put back as much as possible. To be as wild as it once was.
I'm praying that DeSantis doesn't see this film - he'll want to resurrect this project. 🙄 Just look at all the natural resources we can exploit and, besides, the experts say that it won't harm the environment! Think of the jobs! Bigger! Better!! Faster!!! More!!!!
@@Couplescience Just what florida needs, more ship-filled artificial ditches only considered rivers by name... not like Florida has some of the finest (yet relatively sensitive) blackwater and spring fed rivers of the nation, oh wait...
@@russellspear4911 do you honestly think that if they'd continue cutting the Barge Canal across Florida and severed the entire aquifer that the State of Florida would be better? Since they cut the aquifer in half, the State of Florida is constantly in a Water Crisis. I lived there 30 years. I know this to be a fact. There's not enough water in the whole Southern half of the state for the amount of people that live there and the entire State of Florida isn't constant Water Crisis because they tried to cut an idiotic Barge Canal across the state to save rich people money. Are you rich person? Would that Barge Canal has saved you shipping cost to ship your merchandise from the Gulf to the Atlantic? Are you just some moron who's flapping his lips without knowing at all what he's talking about? I think that's actually the case. I think you should shut up and read a book instead of running your mouth off about things that you don't know about. Maybe you should start with a history book.
