0:55 Ahh, the marvelous magnetic wand. I've got one. I use it everywhere. Especially when I dropped my carburetor cover's wing nut down inside the carb. Magnetic wand to the rescue! Dropped the wrench under the engine where I couldn't reach. Snatched it back with the wand. It's got a million uses. Sometimes it just holds important notes on my fridge. Always a pleasure to watch a genius at work. Thank you!

I just bought a similar vise this morning at a yard sale for $20. I'm not sure what the brand is yet but it is vintage. The first thing I did when I got home is watch this video. Thanks.

This is so instructional! I have an older import that is very similar. I love the crank handles. After watching this I believe I can tackle mine.

If only more people would breathe new life into old things the way you do. Beautiful to watch! But what exactly was that tiny metal pellet you had to fetch from the floor?

I have an chinese clone of that vise. Problems I have solved (so far): the leadscrews from both axles have a 10mm shoulder, passing through an 15mm bore, so it was very sloppy. Fixed with turned brass sleeves with shoulder. The plate to hold the leadscrew (the one you replaced with brass screws) is very thin and so it's all bent/warped/dented. Will make a beefier one out of steel or stainless (that's what I have now). The dials are useless, will throw them away. I did a 51100 thrust bearing collar in brass, that turned out beautifully, but I made it somehow short, since it's the thing that will make the preload on the leadscrew. Will probably cut threads on the cilindrical portion of this leadscrew and add a nice brass tension adjuster. The handles are sooooooo cheesey. Will probably turn something (thinking about a beautiful hourglass-like design). I did scrape the bearing surfaces (except the dovetails) and put them to machinery specs (under 0.001" flatness). It was off by a lot (1/16"!). I did flatened the gibs on the diamond stone, but still not satisfied. Found a strip of teflon that is exactly the same thickness, will probably try that. Maybe I'll do a video and post it here. Haven't give a though about the adjusting scews. Probably will make a central thumbscrew to lock it in place and two smaller for adjusting, maybe with a knurled handnut as well, all out of brass (beautiful) or stainless (strong and shiny after polishing).
