This a great video! I also grid but I discovered that I could find my place by gridding only the horizontal lines 10 stitches apart. I also switched to 4lb. Red fishing line because I found it easier to pull out than Sulky Sliver. I have seen a few too many posts on IG regarding struggles to wash out grid lines from pre-gridded fabric. I cover the piece when I am not stitching and wash my hands before stitching.

Those are all great tips! I also use grime guards and it definitely makes a difference. I have also seen people struggle with washing out gridlines so that is another reason why I find it worth it to take the time to do it myself.

I think I would keep pregridded fabric for full coverage stitching. Then it doesn’t matter if they don’t ‘disappear’.

hello Gemma, thank you very much for sharing. That's great. It's tedious at first, but it will be very helpful and you don't have to buy an easy count. Just started gridding. First time doing it. What I did was do the centre line in each direction in a 4lb fishing line. And then the verticle lines in one colour thread, and the horizontal in a different colour to help me know which way is up.

Awesome tutorial Gemma...thank you so much for making this video. It will be very helpful when and if I try to grid with sulki sliver...right now I've gridded my Cardinals by putting a dot at each 10x10 corner. I was worried about the lines maybe not washing out or coming back. As it is now,you can't even see my dots under my stitching. But I am stitching on 18ct 2x1...maybe if I was stitching on higher ct with 1 thread, you might be able to see my dots 🤔 What i like about your way of gridding is you mentioned that you can still see your sulki grid after you've stitched and it helps with counting. When I've stitched my corner dots,I do sometimes have to be very careful when counting because I can't see my 10x10 anymore. Hope that makes sense.

Yes exactly that is why I find it worth the time to sew on my own grid, as it goes between the stitches then it’s still visible. Then I never have to count higher than five as I can count from either side of the box.

I use a 26 tapestry needle, it is not a ballpoint, I have not tried those yet

@@gemmastitches I also have always used a 26 tapestry needle,but just got a 26 ball point and im not sure how im liking it....im tying to be patient and give it a fair try,but its really slowing me down . I didn't like the brand tapestry needle I was using, the eye was ruff and terrible but its the only kind that Hobby Lobby sold. Dont have a LNS nearby. I did win some peace maker needles on flosstube,but they havent arrived yet. What brand is your tapestry needles??

I plan to make a Legend of Zelda project I found on Etsy here www.etsy.com/ca/listing/1140521058/zelda-stained-glass-cross-stitch-pattern?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=legend+of+zelda+stained+glass&ref=sr_gallery-1-5&tr_rank=11&organic_search_click=1&pro=1 I do prefer this method as I can still see the lines even on areas that have been stitched. And also the gridline actually goes between the stitches, while with pre-gridded fabric the gridline is on the line of stitches and you have to decide if that’s row one or ten. I know I would mix myself up 🤣

Do you think it is possible to set this up if you know your margins for border/dinishing.. if you could count off from top left instead of having to find center and then start counting and gridding?

What are you sticking the pins into? What project are you doing? What count is that fabric?

I put an old blanket down on top of my table so I’d have something to stick the pins into. It is 18 count aida

Thank you for this tutorial. I’m a little confused why the midpoint of your fabric isn’t the midpoint of your design?

I am placing the midpoint of the design at the centre of the fabric, that’s why I folded it at the beginning to find the centre, then I match it to the centre on the chart, I might be off by a stitch or two but with enough extra fabric on the outside it should be fine

Do you intend to frame your pieces? They’re all so huge I would have to take out a second mortgage for the cost! 😂

Haha no kidding! I actually make them into wall-hangings instead of framing. I have an upcoming video tutorial about how I do that, it is much cheaper (and also not so heavy, I framed one piece and my husband had to reinforce the frame so it would not pull itself apart lol)

Yes, I’m marking it off in 10x10 squares so it matches my pattern, makes counting while stitching and parking easier

The real question is how long did this take to do? 🤣. I'm a heathen and refuse to spend the time doing this

🤣 If I only work on gridding then it takes a day or two. But I usually just pick away at it, do a couple of gridlines a day in between working other projects so by the time I’m done stitching my main piece my next one is ready to go. I find in the long run it saves me time because I make fewer counting errors and fixing mistakes is easier, but I know many stitchers never grid so do what works for you 😄
