Hello Mr Langford Crossbasket house has changed quite a bit since l filmed this, Historic Scotland allowed them to strip the rough cast of the building to reveil the beautiful sandstone and its now opened as a hotel and wedding venue its a gorgeous building that on the At risk register and possibly be lost and thanks for your comment.
The renovation works were carried out in a most professional and safe manner. Between 2013 and August 2015, this listed building saw an incredible transformation take place. at the start of August 2015, it opened as a 5 star wedding venue, with exclusive access for the happy couples and their families. Its not a hotel. Your little video is now a good record of what it looked like immediately before it was renovated. Thanks for that. I'm sure anybody who ever downloads it from here, will always make sure they mention "Intercity1251" as the origin and credit. (it would be shameful and wrong on so many levels not to) Well done.
Loved staying at this place, it was a wonderful ministry to many people in this community, outreach to teens in 1996. I spent around one month staying upstairs in the castle. A university group of us stayed there with a couple who owned the castle, were full time missionaries there, wonderful hosts and cooks, quite hospitable. Not at all haunted or bothered by bad spirits when I stayed there, lots of prayer and praises at that time. I loved quiet mornings by the creek-Calder. A once in a lifetime gift to spend a summer in Scotland and in Ireland as well. I would love to stay at the Crossbasket now that it is completely renovated into a hotel, very pleased it is being used for a happy purpose, wonderful windows. I spent quite a few mornings cleaning floors, stairs, walls of the castle. I spent an entire day pulling weeds in the garden and planting flowers in two garden areas. The landscape was amazing, the green was brilliant, mossy grounds, light mists, sound of water in the creek, skies barely would get dark in June. Clydesdale Horses were my daily friends as well, magnificent memories...
Anna, thanks that was a lovely comment i knew Crossbaskets house quite well and as a child in the 70s played in the grounds and later met the Americans missonarys that where based there and they where friendly and approachable,it was my late mum who filmed the clip she was a special needs teacher and had visited the house at some point in her career and i took her down for a look, but want to thank you.Iain
In the 60's the house was home to a college for physically disabled students. When it was being altered to accommodate the college, a pair of red cloth shoes with long upturned front was found inside a cupboard but they crumbled when they were touched. The story that went with them was that Mary Queen of Scots had hidden in the house at one point but was disturbed and had to leave in a rush with the shoes staying behind. When I stayed there, I was shown a hidden - and rather dark and scary - stair from the second to the third floor.
Thanks for this interesting bit of history. I assume this is what we see driving down from EK to Blantyre on the dual carriageway? I will take more notice now and maybe even cycle down to look. I hope it is up and running now as one of your viewers seems to be suggesting. Beautiful building just needs some TLC and a £1M or so spent on it.
Beware,The house is haunted by a ghost.During renovation the watchmans alsatian dog went down stairs to basement, came runnning back up tail between legs whimpering.Watchman went downstairs, nobody to be seen,he felt a very cold shiver in basement
