No need to change the mech. And it wasn’t ahold clear problem. It’s the motor brushes.

That’s not what a hold clear is for. The problem is a motor brush. A hold clear is only used to hold a gate up. Once it releases it free spins. The downward motion is slowed by the brushes in the motor. The hold clear has nothing to do with the gate dropping

@@kaseyaldrich4746 If this is a motor-brush issue, I would not expect the gate to go back up so easy, while it looked fine doing so. Brushes aren't directional. I think this is a switch problem: switches on the axle the gate is attached to actuate on the position of the gate itself and either use resistors or a special sequence of shorting windings on the motor to brake the descent.

@@weeardguy I cant tell you how many times I’ve pulled out dirty brushes and just blown the carbon off and out of the motor, after pushing the gate back up. Also stood there and replaced pawls and ratchet wheels. I don’t say these things because I made it up, I say them because I’ve taken these calls one to many times. You’re never going to take a call that is absolutely the same as the last one or the next one you’ll take. Could it be the brushes? Absolutely. Could it be something else? Absolutely. Thats why we try and tell the younger guys to pull your brushes on atleast a quarterly, clean your contacts, watch for arcing, and if you came figure out, call one of your adjoining maintainers regardless of what time it is.

Yes that would have helped stop in from hitting the ground, but still would do damage to the rod. CSX did fix it the next day and no one was hurt, luckily, like you said.
