Crossing Maine's Infamous Knife Edge

Mt. Katahdin in Maine has an infamous trail called The Knife Edge. It connects some of the more prominent peaks and eventually leads up to Baxter Peak which is the tallest in Maine. It's known for being one of the more dangerous hikes because of its ultra skinny hiking areas and deadly drops on either side. Recently, I traveled up to Baxter State Park in order to take on this sketchy trail.

I was born and grew up in MILLINOCKET, but I never made it up the mountain. The one time I tried, it ended up pouring, and by the time we got to Chimney Pond, the top of the mountain was in clouds and some of the trails were closed due to the weather. Thanks for taking us with you!

I have been on many dangerous hikes, but nothing like this. When you make your way across the country please stop in Nevada for another hike with a view of Area 51. Tikaboo Peak is much easier then what you did, but a great look at Area 51. I'll even take you if you want to do it. Loved the video thank you!!!

I've hiked the Knife Edge, both ways. I was with a friend who is a hang glider pilot, he was crossing on all fours clinging to the rock while I was just walking along the Edge...I was a chimney sweep and heights mean nothing to me, while my pilot friend stated that he was uncomfortable being so high, yet so close to the rocks!

That's been on my bucket list for a while. It's a big commitment simply to drive all the way to the mountain and make the arduous hike just to start Knife Edge. Thanks for the inspiration.

Haha I remember hiking this trail 2 years ago. We headed up cathedral trail and our plan was to go across knufe's edge. It was extremely cloudy, very sketchy, so we decided to go out a little bit, we felt comfortable even though we couldn't see much of where or how far we had gone. Eventually the wind blew away the cloud and we were able to see we were around half-way! It was quite beautiful and I enjoyed it. People say it is much narrower than it actually is, and I only remember one really thin part. I am a little sad that you didn't show the chimney though as that is my favorite part of the trail. Great video though. Greetings from Maine😁

That is scary, not the height, but the rocks that could simply come loose under your feet. Looking forward to your visit again in Calif. You did a video here at Stout Grove inland from Crescent City, CA. Just north in Cave Junction on Hwy 199 are some caves! You might be interested in that. I don't do caves, so if you do it, I can see what's inside, if they let you video it. Be safe, and thank you.

i fail to see the thrill of hiking on such a dangerous trail but that is my opinion. Who pays for the people who fall and break a bone and need help getting back down?
@MobileInstinct
@MobileInstinct 5 лет назад
I guess everyone has their own interests. I believe The National Guard handle most of the air lifting of injured people. Don't think its that often but they use it as training exercise. Every state and park is different though.
