Crossing the Columbia River Bar: Graveyard of the Pacific
Columbia River Bar: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbi...
From Wiki: The Columbia Bar, also frequently called the Columbia River Bar, is a system of bars and shoals at the mouth of the Columbia River spanning the U.S. states of Oregon and Washington. The bar is about 3 miles (5 km) wide and 6 miles (10 km) long.
The bar is where the river's current dissipates into the Pacific Ocean, often as large standing waves. The waves are partially caused by the deposition of sediment as the river slows, as well as mixing with ocean waves. The waves, wind, and current are hazardous for vessels of all sizes. The Columbia current varies from 4 to 7 knots westward, and therefore into the predominantly westerly winds and ocean swells, creating significant surface conditions. Unlike other major rivers, the current is focused "like a fire hose" without the benefit of a river delta. Conditions can change from calm to life-threatening in as little as five minutes due to changes of direction of wind and ocean swell. Since 1792, approximately 2,000 large ships have sunk in and around the Columbia Bar, and because of the danger and the numerous shipwrecks the mouth of the Columbia River acquired a reputation worldwide as the Graveyard of the Pacific.
Graveyard of the Pacific: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graveya...
List of Oregon shipwrecks: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...
The Wreck or the Peter Iredale: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_I...
Peter Iredale was a four-masted steel barque sailing vessel that ran ashore October 25, 1906, on the Oregon coast en route to the Columbia River. She was abandoned on Clatsop Spit near Fort Stevens in Warrenton about four miles (6 km) south of the Columbia River channel. Wreckage is still visible, making it a popular tourist attraction as one of the most accessible shipwrecks of the Graveyard of the Pcific.

Crossing the bar would be relaxing, if it weren't for the pucker-factor for a potential rogue wave. The one time we were hit sideways by a rogue wave, which almost rolled us, our Go Pros were off to save battery-life for the actual fishing. Missed the perfect video...

That was an unusually calm day for the region. One of my uncles used to fish out there and he showed us some photos of some really rough days, taken from shore after they ran the boat back to Astoria. They were never foolish enough to stay out for "just one more set."

Yes, this was very calm. But what makes the Columbia River Bar so dangerous, is that it can change from calm to deadly, in a matter of minutes. I've crossed the bar when it started off this calm, and then out of nowhere it was waves over the bow and people were tying off to the safety lanyards on our 72 ft. sailboat.

Thank you for this video. It brings back memories. On May 4th 2004 I put at the mouth (from the parking lot at Fort Canby). I canoed in a 17.6 Old Town to the Snake River. I would not trade the experience for all the money in the world, and I would not do it again for all the money in the world. 😳 😆. Thanks again.

Thanks, and yes this one was. But there was one bad run, that we didn't get on film, where the boat got hit by a sneaker wave, and it almost rolled completely over. One minute the boat is plowing forward through the waves, and the next minute it was on it's side with sea water coming in the driver's side window.

The thing about crossing this bar, is that the conditions change so quickly due to the converging currents. So, it can go from sunny and smooth as glass, to overcast and swells taller than your boat, in just a few minutes.

Yeah, it's funny how that works. On the way back in, when the cameras were off (cards full, batteries dead), we got hit by a sneaker wave coming from the side, and we almost lost a couple of fishing poles; you know it's bad when you are suddenly sideways and look to the right and see sky, and then look to the left and see water coming in.

@BM22TechReview
@BM22TechReview 3 года назад
The problem is, this bar changes so quickly, you don't know how it will be, from day to day, hour to hour, or minute to minute. Cameras have to always be running, working, and ready to go when you leave the dock. We've had a sneaker wave hit us so hard, we were on our side, and nearly capsized. But it was on the way in, after a day of tuna fish 150 miles out, and the camera's batteries were dead. So to answer you...yes, we try to have the cameras up and running each time we cross, and we see what we see. But remember, as much as I love making videos, the purpose of crossing the bar is to go ocean fishing, so that is our main focus. It's not worth the risk (because this is a dangerous bar) to spend a day crossing back and forth over the bar, in hopes of catching a near miss or near sinking on video. So all we can do, is try to set the cameras to catch the video when and if something actually goes wrong.

I'd have no second thoughts about going through this in my sea kayak???? WTF
@BM22TechReview
@BM22TechReview 4 года назад
I did have a plan...where I'd bring my kayak out here to the bar, and if it was calm enough, try to paddle out in it. But every time we tried it, it was way too rough. The other issue is, that no matter how buoyant your kayak is, or how good your life jacket is, when you come across places like this where several currents come together, you are at risk of getting sucked under. I learned that the hard way when I approached within 100 yards of the base of Willamette Falls in Oregon City (if you don't know that one, do a quick G search). It's not an overly large falls, but there is very good salmon fishing in that area as the fish rest before swimming up the fish ladder. The currents around it are horrendous; my kayak was sucked straight down under water, and luckily I was wearing a break-away skirt which allowed me to escape.

About how deep is the water there?
@BM22TechReview
@BM22TechReview 3 года назад
It is dredged to 55 feet officially (60 to 65 when actually dredged). Not counting sandbars, the average depth runs from 45 feet 50 feet, but because the bottom is very active and always changing, we've seen much deeper on our depth finder. BTW my first answer usually is, the depth is a lot deepen when you're on top of a 20 foot swell, and a lot shallower when you're down in the trough :)

The problem with the Columbia River Bar, is that it can change from this, to 20 foot swells in the blink of an eye. On one trip we had a calm day like this, and were hit sideways by a sneaker wave, and it almost rolled the boat. There is a reason this bar is considered one of the most dangerous in the world.
@jenniferlans8687
@jenniferlans8687 3 года назад
But if its dangerous why show it to people to show its so calm and any one can come out here ?
@BM22TechReview
@BM22TechReview 3 года назад
We try to film the bar each time we cross it... just in case something happens. Sometimes the footage is good enough to upload, sometimes not. When the poor weather sets in, you'd think it would make for a better video, and sometimes that's true...unless the cameras fog up, or there is too much rain or wave splash on the cameras, or the visibility is hampered by heavy fog. Also, there have been times when the camera batteries were depleted when we returned from a day of ocean fishing, and missed some very good footage. In addition to the converging currents, one of the things that makes this bar so dangerous, is that it can be so calm...and then not. As a kid, we'd cross the bar in a 12 ft boat, with a small motor on it; as an adult, I've even crossed the bar in a kayak...all with no trouble at all. But I've also crossed the bar on a 40 ft boat, that barely made it safely across.

Ya have huh? Damn. Also what i kinda am concerned about is the currents in the bar. Never seen a shark in my life before Sounds pretty uncomfortable either way
@BM22TechReview
@BM22TechReview 3 года назад
Currents are always tricky...especially for divers. I always check the currents before getting into the water, because things can change quickly. For the most part, I've found currents to be my friend...they bring the fish in to you (as they follow the food source), making life easier. With that said, the current here changes rapidly, so I always check prior to getting in the water, and look for any changes while I'm in the water. And it's always the subtle current that gets you; when you surface and find you're miles away from the boat, when it seemed that I had not moved at all. Eventually I learned to always carry signal flares...just in case. And these days (I'm smarter than when I was younger), we always leave someone up in the boat (dive tender) to monitor conditions and track us on the fish finder...which of course was not the case when we were younger. Good luck.
@jakethedog2934

Hey thats actually smart! That's cool. I don't got much fear in the water but i rarely ever dive but I train a lot for it though. Hoping to experience something new soon, thanks good luck to you too.

@BM22TechReview 2 года назад
And that's how it tricks you. It can be "tame as can be" and then in minutes change to be the worst thing you've ever seen. It was a calm day the time a sneaker wave came in from the side and nearly rolled us; instantly the sidewall of the cabin was our floor. And anything loose on the deck became property of the river (unsecured poles, tackle boxes, and clothing).

@@BM22TechReview I have crossed it a bunch, only at the helm a few. I was not kidding anyone, that is as tame as it gets. It can kick your ass. I have never crossed without a life persevere on, even on the Shake and bake. . 2 hours later it is a monster. If you get a swell coming in, say you were out too long fishing on an outgoing tide trying to come - uhhh.. This crossing had no wind waves. You got unlucky with the sneaker. I have never crossed it in Feb. - God bless you. Get a fiberglass boat that won't sink and self bails.

I have shorter edited versions of various bar crossings. But when I post those, people claim that it's being edited to make it look worse than it really was. On many videos (like I did with my Atlantis submarine ride), I post a condensed version, and then a full version. Last week I filmed an hour's worth of video in a shark cage up on the North Shore; 5 minutes of sharks is pretty cool, but a whole hour of sharks can be a bit boring :)
