The video shows the crossing of the Danube on the new bridge built between Braila and Galati. The direction of travel is from Dobrogea (Tulcea) to Muntenia (Braila). The footage was taken in August 2023, shortly after the inauguration.
The Braila Bridge over the Danube is a suspension road bridge that has a total length of 1,974.30 m, a central span of 1,120 meters and two lateral spans of 489.65 and 364.65 meters. The central opening is located 38 meters above the maximum flood level of the Danube.
The total width of the Brăila suspension bridge is 31.70 m, of which the bridge path with 4 traffic lanes is 22.00 m, to which two at a time additional lanes for pedestrian traffic, bicycles and maintenance are added.
First studies for a bridge in the Lower Danube region were done in 1986, but the first prefeasibility study was conducted in 1996. The final feasibility study was finished in 2016 by ISPCF [Ro] and Pegaso Ingegneria. In 2017, the bridge project was awarded to the Astaldi (now Webuild) and IHI Infrastructure Systems association for an estimated cost of €434 million, and the construction works started in December 2018. The European Union co-funded the project with €363 million from Cohesion Policy funds. it is the largest bridge over the Danube, and the third longest suspension bridge in the European Union. The bridge improves road traffic accessibility of the Galati-Braila area to Constanta and Tulcea, and connections of the Moldavia and Muntenia regions with Dobruja. The bridge was inaugurated on July 6, 2023.
