I'm curious to know what your opinion is of tweeter/mids speaker combos that have a passive crossover. I bought some a while back and they have been good, but thats my opinion and it keeps my set up simple.

I suggested a video ago that it would be cool if you explain in more depth adjusting input gain on a DSP before the amplifier... You told me you weren't going to waste a 10 minute video explaining something everyone knows... Now were back to videos explaining crossovers!? Is this something you believe your viewers need a 2nd video explaining crossovers?

I have a pioneer avh-x4800bs in network mode. Tweeters on front channel. Midrange on rear channel and subs on sub channel. Can I run the midrange on the FULL instead of HPF. As long as I have it crossover to the specification of the speaker. 155hz - 10khz

I have noticed setting my low pass at 200hz with 24 slope this gave me the most full sound from subs. I would normally use 65 or 80hz with 8 slope but there is alot of bass lost when I lower the frequency below 125hz.
@_N4VE_
@_N4VE_ 3 месяца назад
what kind of sub do you have? I have a pair of DS18 6.5 subs and they recommend a 160hz LPF. Which is pretty high. I run it with DS18 6x9s in the doors and they recommend a 120hz HPF. So I’m wondering how to set up my crossovers? Rn I have the sub LPF 150hz -24db slope, and the 6x9s HPF 150hz -24db. Not sure if that’s optimal, but I’m only just learning about tuning and saw that -24db is best for when you set your x-overs at the same hz.

I really wish I could find a stereo installer thats as professional as what you guys show on this channel. Im blown away how many hack shops Ive encountered that dont go anywhere even close to this level of depth when installing stereos amps and subs. They always just slam the hardware together fiddle with the eq, generically set crossovers and they call that professional.

Just after 11 min mark you take about setting the crossover on the head unit and turning it down on the amp not all the way but some as an added protection incase something happens at the head unit. How much further away should the number be to work effectively? You have your head unit crossover set to 125 and the amp to 40, but what if you have it set to 80, do you keep it set to 40? Or will it effect the slop more?
@mildaudiophile3879
@mildaudiophile3879 9 месяцев назад
Yes you want to set at low as possible so you have full range sound at the amp but you can make you cuts on the head unit but I’ve learned pick on other the other depending which one sound better I use the amp crossovers on bc it sounds better but it could also be bc they don’t have 80 on the audio control amp only 100 90 or 75 at 12db. The advantage of using the head unit is that it has the ability to adjust the slope

Cutoff slopes also tend to have a bump around the cut-off, depending on the filter design. Especially if you overlap those from the headunit and amplifier filters, you can get weird effects. Two filters chained doesn't always mean it filters harder.

Hi Marc! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with others. I just want to add, that Pink Noise looks as flat line only if you using RTA Analyzers. If you use devices with true FFT, pink noise will roll off at higher frequencies. Because actually Pink Noise is a white noise with a 6 dB/Oct LPF applyed. It is important to know when using FFT analyzers

so to confirm, if I wanna use the LPF on my head unit, I turn the LPF on my AMP all the way up since it doesn’t have an “off” option? And for using the HPF on my head unit, I turn the HPF on the AMP all the way up as well?
@Khans0120
@Khans0120 3 месяца назад
@@_N4VE_ yes indeed. Otherwise both sets of filters will essentially "fight" each other so you want one set of them to be set to the maximum to allow all the frequencies through that they're receiving.

@@Khans0120 so for HPF I set it to max as well? because in the video he had it set to the lowest correct?
@Khans0120
@Khans0120 3 месяца назад
@@_N4VE_ yes, set both on the amp to the maximum if your headunit is doing the crossover work(max in this sense turns it "off"). Setting the amp to a lower setting when your headunit is already set to do that work will only make your amp work harder than it needs to and it can have an impact on sound quality. You'll be creating phase and signal degradation issues setting both sets of crossovers to the same settings.

Does using two xovers mess with phase? As you know, the 6db/8ª slope rotates the phase in 90 degrees. 12db/8ª - 180 degrees. 24db/8ª - 360 degrees, which doesn't matter. And it goes on and on and on...

@_N4VE_
@_N4VE_ 3 месяца назад
Your sub will still hit those low frequencies. You just can’t tune your LPF below 50hz. Which you wouldn’t do anyways. Many Subs are tuned from 80-100hz but that doesn’t mean it WONT play lower hz. If you set it to 50hz, your basically beginning the cut-off at 50hz, so you’d actually get less bass out of your sub from anything higher than 50hz. Don’t worry, your amp is fine for a subwoofer. Most commonly, subs tune from 80hz-100hz.

Thanks for this video, very useful info despite I already knew a lot :) we always keep learning! My system uses a head unit with built in DSP and active crossover settings (Kenwood KIV-700), seperate amp for subwoofer (Raveland) and seperate 4-channel amp (DLS) for the speakers (DLS). The speakers itself in both front and rear uses their own passive pre-set crossover filters because they were a complete set. It works great, but after 15+ years of use I finally came across these video's and now I want find out if I can improve the crossover and gain settings :)

For a high end aftermarket system an aftermarket head unit is best for sound quality and control.
@ryanwilson5936
@ryanwilson5936 4 года назад
If it already sounds good TO YOU with the company fitted head unit then it’s most likely a waste of money just so it “sounds better” to your friend. It’s not your friends car, it’s YOUR car. Now, if you are interested in diving into audio tuning in general or you actually enjoy hearing the subtle differences between instruments/sounds/locations and want to be able to adjust individual settings to your exact liking, then an upgraded head unit may actually be worth it. Company fitted head units do not offer much in the terms of sound customization. Sure, you may be able to adjust a few things but your control is usually severely limited AND most company fitted head units have weird EQ curves (that you can’t change) that change depending on how loud the signal is. Usually meaning that the louder your volume, the lower the bass (to protect company installed speakers from being damaged from loud playback). There’s two positions you can be in here. Position 1) You just want to play music and have it sound good with the least amount of user input so you don’t have to go messing around with multiple in-depth settings to achieve the sound you want. Like I said above, if your current company installed head unit already sounds good TO YOU, you don’t have to do anything more and you can stop reading and just go enjoy your music. Position 2) You want your aftermarket speakers to sound the absolute best they can. That’s usually why people get into aftermarket car audio to begin with. They want better sound quality. A bonus to doing this, if you also get an aftermarket head unit, is that you are now allowed to adjust the signal going to the speaker and the sound coming out of them. In 2020, a new aftermarket head unit is pretty much a dash mounted DSP (digital signal processor) giving you control over how your system performs and sounds. If you want to change settings to get the “perfect” sound then an aftermarket head unit is a good idea. Also, depending on your components (speakers, amps, wire quality, etc.), being able to control the signal path may help protect certain other components in that signal path from being over/under powered, help with frequency interference (crossover control), and help to deliver an all around cleaner signal and power path. Again, if your current system is installed properly and YOU enjoy how it sounds, an aftermarket head unit may be a waste of money. However, If care about pushing your system safely to its highest potential, then an aftermarket head unit might just be the thing your system has been missing and you don’t even know it because you haven’t heard your system with an aftermarket head unit yet. I don’t want to make your decisions for you but if it were me, I’d choose control over convenience when it comes to audio. Meaning, if I had aftermarket speakers/subs/amps I wouldn’t hesitate to also get an aftermarket head unit. IF you can afford to upgrade units and YOU WANT to, go for it man. If not, keep enjoying what you have.

Set the crossovers on the head unit to 100 hz (both the lpf and hpf). On the amp turn them off if possible or set the hpf to the lowest setting and the lpf to its highest setting. The passive crossovers that come with your speakers are doing something else. They’re filtering the door speakers from the tweeter. Those don’t have adjustments and are just wired according to the instruction manual.

i NEED SOME HELP HERE LOL! Ok so my factory deck died so I bought a new double din. I was upsold to a kenwood excelon. Decided They may as well give me new speakers as well...that became upsold to an amp, new 6/9 in back and 6.5 components in the front 280 rms at 4 ohm. THEN I lacked the bass so I got an extra 1000w amp and 2 12" kenwood excelon subs in a custom box.. running 600w rms at 4 ohm. Here is the thing ... I bought pretty much the best speakers I could get from visions electronics. I also bought a 4 year warranty on all equipment and a lifetime warranty on the install. OK SO the excelon deck has all these super crazy settings ... just unreal and a 24 band eq ect ect. It also has options for slopes... this is where i get lost ... both amps are capable of 12 slope and deck will do 24 but run at 6 and honestly my music doesn't sound the way i like... seems flat. for $5000 you think they would tune it right ? I play mostly trance and some rock ... OK that doesnt matter been almost a year and trying to figure out the slopes. I am guessing go back to visions and get a tune but the options truly come down to deck. I pound it hard and thats about the only way it sounds the way i like it lol. Deck has slope options for each speaker and the subs am I doing something wrong here or is the only way I can hear mid is at full volume? fronts are underpowered. its component system that can take 250rms? feel stupid here but somebody send me an answer haha. furthering the confusion is the eq, bass remote for subs ect .

One issue here is that the output channels of a head unit, may be much more limited, than an amp, and especially output of a dsp unit. A head unit may provide 4-6 channels, a dsp 8+. Or even an amp with two inputs but 4 or more out. And a pre out. Imo today it’s best to use dsp, and use the crossovers in the dsp.

@@CarAudioFabricationSo to confirm, If I wanna use my head unit x-overs for my sub, I turn my LPF on my AMP all the way up? Since it doesn’t have an “off” option, correct? And if I use my head unit for my door speakers HPF, I turn my HPF on the AMP all the way up? correct? Currently bridging my amp for the 2 door speakers, and channel 3-4(passenger speaker) has LPF-FULL-HPF. Which setting should I use and how do I set it if I’m using the head unit instead?

That likely has something to do with how your system is wired up. I'd need a bit more info on what you're running to figure out what's going on. Best guess is if your head unit has pre-out settings they may be set wrong, which would send subwoofer signal to the rear speaker outputs.

I have a Benz, C230 Kompressor Coupe... What can I do with all that sadly produced 80's rock on my playlist given that I only have 3 speakers (dash, doors) and a Diamond 12 ported sub in back? I don't have an amp for my new headunit just the sub. I want just enough to Rush's Best Of from the rear seat are. Are crossovers necessary to hear YYZ as it was meant to be heard?

Cannon thanks for your rich explanations. Kindly advise, I have in my car a a mono block dedicated to the sub and another 6 channel amp dedicated to all other midrange and tweeters and lastly a an equalizer.I however do not still appreciate 20-30hz wavy/ air bass, can adding an aftermarket crossover cancel off the punchy bass and give me only the wavy bass of 20-30hz to the sub. (All equipment and speakers I have are from pioneer high end)

If you could, I know you are talking about crossovers, but I have a question about the head unit. I have a Pioneer AVH-2400NEX, I can't see the model #of the unit that you have, but I mostly had played all my video on DVD, but when I switched to digital media files, I noticed that my unit would play the video just fine, but I would get NO audio whatsoever. I have tried all different types, WMV, MPEG, AVI... all types that this unit is supposed to support. I have the latest firmware updated, but still no luck. Also can't get any answers from Pioneer customer service. Just wondered if you had tried video files on this unit, or have heard of this problem on Pioneer units. Thanks in advance.

I have infinity 2 way speakers up front. Unfortunately I just hooked them up to my amp and its way to much power for them more than double. Gain is set with oscope would I adjust the power with the gain? And do I set 2 ways to full range or hpf?

I chose the pioneer head unit that is displayed in this video and was disappointed. The low-pass for the mid-range (which is actually my mid-bass) only goes down to 1.2 kilohertz. I need to xover the mid-bass blend into my horns at 800Hz. It will only let the mid-bass and horns xover at 1.2Khz. Now I'm going to have to buy an external crossover.

I have a 05 Sierra Ext SLE with a 8.1 Oreo Android head unit and recently connected my subs RCA's to my speaker wires via splicing into them, my problem is that 1.) I can't adjust my subwoofer equalizer on my head unit and 2.) I don't know if the equalizer settings on my head unit for my crossovers is a high or low crossover

Hi Mr. Mark, I have a quick question if you do mind me asking. I purchase the Taramps TS-400X4, I know is a very cheap amp, but is for my daughter first car, my question is Could I connect one speaker on a bridge on ch1/2 and a second speaker on just ch1 on the same bridge side, I am trying to maximize the RMS on at least one speaker.

I have a quick question that I hope you could help me out with, I've tried searching online forums as well as some DSP tutorials but haven't found a solid answer to my question. It's my first time going active and my question is in relation to tweeter channels on an active setup, as far as the "tweeter channel level" goes within the dsp software. What I'm trying to get at is that as we all know a tweeter doesn't require much power, say its a 4ohm tweet rated for 25w for example so how would you go about "dialing back" the power to a safe level on the "tweeter channel levels"? Within my dsp software its -60db to 0db level control per channel, and assuming that since +3db is doubling while -3db is halving power I would be adjusting in increments of -3db? So for example say my amp makes 150watts at 4ohm by setting the "tweeter channel level" at -9db it'll bring it down hypothetically 18.75w? I really don't want to smoke my expensive tweeters, I think I got a general understanding of "+/-3db" on some passive x-overs. But if you could shed some light as far as me heading in the right direction that would be great as well. Enjoy your informational videos btw! Keep it up!

What is a general rule of thumb, for pairing a 4 channel amp, lets say 100 watts RMS per channel, what would be the watts for the the subwoofer. The goal is to have a balanced system from 20hz to 20,000hz, not crazy volume. It gets as loud as I'm comfortable.

I love that you're explaining this to beginners but I feel like you simplify so much sometimes, that you allow errors. Everyone who set up a DSP himself and read a little something wouldn't recommend what you did. A Butterworth 24db/oct and a 12dB/oct Linkwitz at the same frequency. Sometimes you can't play safe but have to watch your Phase.

If I'm using a 3-way electronic crossover for my two sets of 3 way door speakers and a sub, do I still need to set the crossovers on both amps or do I leave the amps un-adjusted (all settings lowest) and simply use the settings on the crossover or do I need to blend the settings (freq & gain) on all three devices?
