Lesson, performance, and discussion of "Crossroad Blues" by Robert Johnson. I demonstrate how I believe Robert tuned and used the capo for his slide style and go over the techniques and phrases involved. I do not believe Robert's recordings were sped up and demonstrate my reasons. What do you think?

I never believed the sped up theories. Johnny Shines heard these recordings in the 60's. So did Son House, Honeyboy Edwards and others. Nobody ever said anything about the recordings being fast or sounding funny. These are people who knew him. That's why I never bought that story.

I absolutely agree with you. My uncle worked in the recording industry in Italy, and I asked him about any of those theories he told me it’s impossible, 78rpm’s are actually very accurate on the voice and generally the higher tones have more fidelity.

@@giacomopandiani6290 Thats a cool story! Yea, plus his records were made in 3 diff locations, at diff times. Just doesnt make much sense at all once you look into it.

i still dont get that tuning?. is that a string to a flat ? or how are all tuned.... i find only open g tuning online like keith richards and am sure its not that but i cNt follow it anyway.. i know the 3rd string 6x 7th ffret and then the high E. but then around the 13th i dont know what you do
@rebelrouzer5318
@rebelrouzer5318 Месяц назад
You tune the low E, A and high E down a full step so the notes are D G D G B D. With a capo at the 3rd fret its in open A. Also most slide players will have the B string slightly flat as it sounds a bit better.

Your playing an LG2 right? I play it in G on my Duolian. If I put a capo on it the strings are slappin the fretboards.

For slide you need a slightly higher action or a very light touch. Try putting a little bit of paper under the saddle peice.

“This is it this is the place where it all happened. I’ll tell you what you gotta do, you see, you go over there and start playing a piece.” “Why?” “Cuz there’s a fellow I got to see and if you playin it right, he’s gonna come around.” “Right Willie, who is this guy?” “Don’t ask me who, you know damn well who!” “Keep it going you standing at the crossroads now, this is where it counts.” “I thought I wasn’t supposed to go down the crossroads Willie?” “We ain’t here for you, we’re here for me.” “You all need a ride?” “What’s you waitin for huh?” “Cmon Willie, lets get to Fulton’s Point huh.” “What time he comin round?” “ What time who! Comin round?” “You don’t be foolin me! I’m talkin about Legba!” (laughter) “Legba? Where you been slick? He done changed his name to Scratch!” “ I don’t want none of your sass! I got business with the man.” “Mean old bastard!” “Forget him honey, he’s crazy.” “ Now you sure you all don’t need a ride?” “ I ain’t ridin with the likes of you smart ass, nor your bitch neither!” (laughter) “Suit yourself, old man!” “ You lookin for me Willie Brown? It’s been a longtime hasn’t it Willie? “Yes, yes it has.” “ Willie, what’s going on here?” “Yes sir, been a longtime. You were about 17 when we saw each other here on this old crossroads wasn’t it? What can I do for you Willie?” “ I come to sees ya, to tell you the deals off!” “Oh no, according to this here piece of paper the deal’s still on!” “You can tear that up, and give me some peace!” “Now why on earth would I wanna do that?” “You sloughed up on your end of things I didn’t end up with what I wanted. I didn’t end up nothing, I didn’t get nothing!” “You got what you we’re supposed to get blues man, ain’t nothing ever as good as what we want it to be, but that ain’t no reason to break a deal.”

I agree they weren’t sped up. The best proof for me is that if they had been, both Robert Lockwood and Johnny Shines (and others who knew them) would have mentioned they were.

Sounds great man. is that a L-00 your playing there? Thanks so much for the lesson. All the recordings he did in the hotel were on a Kalamazoo kg-14. The guitar was considered a cheap guitar even though Gibson had bought them out but still makes it.

Thanks! A big help. It seems Robert Johnson in his songs sometimes let go of the regular 12 bar blues but sometimes add a bar and then goes to the next chord (like in come in my kitchen) which makes it hard to keep up.

@jameslimerickkerr8614 2 года назад
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Yes you are exactly right. I love the way the great solo acoustic blues players from the 1930's were not bound by the 12 bar form, which became locked in with bands. There are sneaky extra beats and measures thrown in with Robert, Blind Lemon, and Charley Patton etc. Robert's timing is incredible. Cheers

McTell were,and in part because of his classical training and elocution sped his voice to higher ranges.I believe Robert L.Johnson may have used Bb Eb Bb Eb G Bb,but slack G as Ab is likely.For McTell, my life work try A D G B E G or E A D F# B D,lute vahuela dual tonality.Its a fact that 78s before 1920,step slow in playback speed,after 1920,up to two steps faster.As Henry Townsend emeritus said " once the artist signs it s recorded commerce,accent, broadcast etc.Chtis Young an old Fiddler of Albuquerque NM

@jameslimerickkerr8614
@jameslimerickkerr8614 3 года назад
Thanks! In my experience the fit of a thumb pick is more important than the brand. Try a few and find one that fits and feels right, you want it pretty snug. I use a Blue Chip which has become the gold standard of picks but they are pricey. I also use Golden Gate and Zookie.

Whilst this version sounds sort of ok, it is not particularly accurate to either of the Johnson Crossroads recordings. It quickly becomes apparent in the first verse, which does not match either recording.

G but the capo makes it A. You tune to g and use a capo as the strings go slack. To tune to open A you have to tune up.
