Thank god Bonamassa is more open minded than the majority of his fans below. This was nothing but a treat to enjoy for those present and us to watch. You really need to get over yourselves and get out more.
Two musicians having a good time. It's not one against the other. It's two guys having fun and ripping. They both sounded great. Music isn't a freaking competition, it's an art. Try getting up on stage with Joe B cold and see what you can do. LOL. Hats off to both of them.
i like that youtube has become a place were the most kindhearted comment wins. but not here my friend, he honestly is just out of key, i know how he feels i will realize that sometimes when no one tells me the key at a jam or im not close to my amp lol but bonamassa sounds good here tho i like the way he sounds more then the way zack sounds tho i like him also. and thats my truth.
I agree. I have emg 81/85s in a esp I own and I also have seymore Duncan’s, and while the emg are heavy and all, it’s like the seymore Duncan’s just have more articulation and warmth and feel. It’s like comparing the emg 81/85s to seymore duncun blackouts. The blackouts just have so much more tone, and it’s less sloppy, and you can really hear the notes so much more clear !! Idk, but I use to love emgs but the SD are just ridiculously precise
I don't even care that Zakk Wylde doesn't exactly sound his best. It's Joe Bonamassa and Zakk Wylde rocking out together to Crossroads. Automatic 10/10.
My mother would call me uncouth but I believe you're completely wrong about zakk Wylde barbaric image? That's for the stage! But inside his soul? His guitar love and spirit guitar rages@@yudhasibarani8476
two amazing guitarists from different backgrounds who completely nail a performance combining metal and blues/rock, a joy to watch. it aint about who is best, it's a showcase that encompasses the best from both guitarists covering a classic nothing more.
Two guitarists from different backgrounds? Nice way of putting it, after Zack Wilde was destroyed to pieces by Joe Bonamassa. Zack is a one trick pony. Joe masters all of it!
@@AffiBlues I would say it’s the exact opposite with Bonamassa being the one trick pony. Zakk Wylde is a metalhead who can chicken pick, that seems pretty versatile to me
@@dirtydanthesecretsauceman8519..and Joe doesn't. I don't think Zack can do anything on a guitar, where he's as good as Joe - Smokin' Joe. We have just seen Zack being destroyed live. Are you in complete denial, or don't you play the guitar with any experience to determine, who's in tune and who's not. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KBT4fEkxVqU.html
100% !!! Seen this a few times , Joe ate his lunch and dinner. I saw him last year and he was incredible , I was blown away how crisp and clean sounding he was , unlike Zakk who unfortunately has gotten sloppy.
You guys who leave comments crack me up when someone is true to their self and playing from the heart you put them down. Keep up the good work of not doing anything with you life. \m/
I get so sick of reading comments from shit-tubers treating these videos like they're some kind of competition. In this video you have 2 entirely different types of guitar players coming together for a tribute. It doesn't matter if one is better than the other. Just watch, enjoy, and shut the fuck up.
John Michael Your comment 'Zack Wylde could rip my head off and shit down my neck' tells me all I need to know about you son. I suspect you identify with him because he is a clueless dip shit as well!
Andy Thomas you made the statement that he was out of shape and overweight. I simply corrected you. If you don't like people correcting you, then you're going to have a miserable life.
HA! Here's my comment i was thinking as I was watching this (before I read your comments) I love Zakk, HUGE influence on me, but wish he'd get back to his roots a bit and play more like his P&G, BoS, skip 2 albums then Hangover Music days. He needs to bring back his rebel les paul with the the beer caps etc, Still love ZW though
lol . P&G , BoS are amazing! I even love the first 4-5 BLS albums, but find since Mafia , its been too repetitive. Still love Zakk and BLS. I'll always bleed black , SDMF
I'm SO thankful for finding Bonamassa, on our local PBS station, quite by accident! Wow! What an amazingly talented artist in EVERY sense of the word! Thank you PBS for the intro- I watched that program 3 separate times! I'm a fan, & now my brother in Mississippi is too! Y'all are great!!!
At about 4:40 I thought the shredy Thor had a chance to redeem himself and take a shot At Joe. But then Joe pulled off an awesome sounding run and I went nah never mind..... Lol
Both of these guys are great guitarists. I have watched them both grow and become masters of the axe. I know that Joe is a bluesman, and Zakk is a rockman. They both bring huge amounts of skill and talent to this video. Joe has an edge here, its his band, and obviously his style, and although Zakk is still kicking ass, he is a weaker bluesman. Doesnt mean he sucks, and his style of playing has sent many slingers to the woodshed, as has Joe. For all of you Zakk haters, I think his career speaks greatly for itself, and Joe is probably on top of his. Ive worn the grooves out of my Zakk CD's. And I love both of these guys, its awesome to see them both jammin. As for their appearances, Zakk has his 90 Biker look, and Joe has his Matrix profile. Who the fuck cares, quit hating. They both rock!
Exactly Alan, I also agree with you, Zakk is a great player too, Joe is incredible and was playing on his own field, what I most like about Joe is his versatility when it comes to play from Hendrix to Clapton and from Beck to BB King, however he still has a way to develop his own voice...maybe next time Zakk could invite Joe to play some Ozzy and Sabbath hehehehe
I will only defend Zakk's playing to this point, He is a metal shredder and blues is all about feeling and emotion, so for all you metal shredders out there if you don't fee it, don't play it. I will take an emotionally phrased 12 note blues lick over a 300 note metal run any day of the week and I like metal...
***** Neither Page or Hendrix "shredded ." He is referring to actual feeling. Guys like SRV and Hendrix could play fast but with emotion that especially thrives from the blues. The real talent lies within being able to create musical personality within a 1-4-5 progression. Rock/Blues is hardly a stretch from any other blues because It's all the same at the core. Zakk doesn't bring much feeling. You could mimic his playing in this video by running your guitar neck through a sowing machine.
I guess you are right in the fact that they were shredding relative to previous players. I guess I should have been more specific. What I'm saying is that I don't admire Zakk's playing here because his fast and unnecessarily noteful licks and runs don't suite the scenario. Also, he wasn't very consistent and his tone wasn't very good either. Joe has a nice full tone and his dynamics and timing were nothing less than spot-on. His phrasing and control fit the scene perfectly. It definitely isn't a contest but I just think Joe is the better player. Zakk wasn't in his element, whatever that may be.
***** Shredding aims at a different effect than blues playing. Sure, you can wow people with fast runs in either genre, but shredding is more mathematical and abstract, sort of like Bach, whereas blues is more intimate and emotional.
This notion that someone that can shred can't possibly have feeling when playing blues is really fucking stupid. Much like you - really fucking stupid.
Zakk gets scorched here and plays his solo through the second verse vocal, Joe stops and then takes him down heard. Does Zakk even know what key this song is in?
I think Zakk is a badass and always has been, and regardless of what you fickle minded music listeners think he is still a highly regarded guitarist with lots of respect in the music business among guitar greats.I don't think Joe did a song with him for the sole purpose of "showing him up" Joe respects him. So should you.Joe usually picks great musicians to surround himself with.
Eric bee Yeah, Joe knows many styles/approaches (and I completely prefer him) but I'm hard pressed to think of occasions outside clinics and demos where he actually plays bluegrass or country or whatever. A few moments on albums, but generally they seem like he's saying "this is the country song, now we can get back to blues rock". The vast majority of the time live he's doing his (far from) standard lead guitar, or mixing it up with some slide. Now, Zakk can do country/chicken picking stuff just fine, but like Joe tends to stick in one stylistic area. Especially these days.
And there's the difference: attention to phrasing. Wylde isn't phrasing with any sense of an interesting voice, whereas Bonamassa (like Clapton on the original) has a clear sense of punctuation and articulation. Wylde's solo sounds like an uninspired run-on sentence of scales; Bonamassa's actually 'speaks'.
+Bubblez Beano Yeah, as much as i love Zakk, it sounds like he is lost and reaching for the feel. And tone leaves a lot to be desired. Doesnt sound like hes understanding the dueling guitar bars either, and he seems to loose timing. You can tell that Joe, ended the song early, there was no feel. But they were both smoking.
I love those jams! So true and un-prepared, but the great musicians involved always deliver! The second that Joe's going to singing after Zacks' solo and Zack isn't really there yet...awesome! Zacks' look: "Shit man, I m not done yet, is it over already??" just floored me....and Joe goes: "oh, sorry bout that, thought you had enough"...LOL!
Thanks for pointing this out. AWESOME moment. Joe totally cuts off Zakk, and Zakk shoots him a "wait im not done yet!" look. Joe stops and lets him finish. Pretty sweet moment.
the funny thing about all this, ZACK is a HUGE fan of SOUTHERN ROCK!! in fact, like JAMES HETFIELD, its his fav music [hetfields juke box in his house is ALL lynyrd skynyrd :)]. so, what does s-rock have to do with crossroads? on the album ONE MORE FROM THE ROAD, skynyrds live album from 1976, ALLEN COLLINS did this song as a tribute to his idol, ERIC CLAPTON!! the most smokin' version of this tune EVER!! collins had been playing that in their set for a few years. in a clapton interview i think from 1976/77, they talked about some of erics new bands he liked, if any. LYNYRD SKYNYRD was one of his top mentioned. the writer asked if he had heard skynyrds cover of his classic jam and what he thought. clapton replied, "it's great! allen collins played the song like i SHOULD have played it!". pretty hi praise. and, if you do not have ONE MORE FROM THE ROAD, or you think skynyrd is 2 songs, you are in for a HUGE surprise!! anyhow, as i said, zak is a HUGE skynyrd/southern rock fan. i have seen him twice on tv doing s-rock stuff, one on an hbo skynyrd special concert where zak and tom keifer from cinderella and PETER FRAMPTON, [another huge skynyrd fan] did a killer acoustic skynyrd set before the show and i was so surprised at zak and how well he knew those tunes. SO......, i see this tube video and click on it expecting to see zak rip this song up as i know ONE MORE FROM THE ROAD is one of his fav albums. WOW!! what a HUGE letdown!! its almost like he never heard the song. and this isnt any difficult tune for a guitar player, its simple blues stuff and zak IS an accomplished guitarist/musician. and watching him totally fug up that pass back to joe for the vocal was wincingly amateurish!! he was obviously so into his own "soloing" he lost himself in the jam. joe b? very cool guitar tone and always good playing, as always. but you could tell he too hadnt rehearsed that song and it was brought up on a wim. he didnt even know the words and sang all the song in one long verse!! but, he was in it!! simple 1-4-5 blues jam. zak was embarrassingly bad and stretched his call WAAAAAAY to long. i like zack. but, i dont care for his black label band or his penchant for constant pinch notes. and i dont have posters of either of these two plastered on my walls [although i do like joes playing and over all TONE better]. my opinion isnt a "my guy against your guy" thing. those who are saying how great zack was in this and the "other guy sucked" and especially the "joe blew it trying to sing over zaks solo" are LOST!!. those saying that have NEVER been in a imprompto jam, especially a blues jam. zak hardly ever looked at joe b for "ques" or "calls" just walk over and face him and wiggle his fingers around like he was doing things far over joes head. zak is a WAY better musician than that. it just really surprised me , not only how bad he was in the jam, but how OFF he was in a song he should have aced and blown the house down with! but, signing off, i will say, in TOTAL neutrality that like the previous poster stated, "joe can do EVERYTHING that zak can but zak can not do everything JOE can". as a professional guitar player who has played, taught, toured, recorded and studied the instrument for over 40 years, my opinion comes from a different motivation and knowledge than the "that guy in the suit" sucks crowd. joe bonamassa is THAT GOOD!!. like his music or not, he is a much more better all around player than zakk wylde. but that doesnt mean "zak sucks", it just means he sucked in this video and NO ONE should write him off because of a bad take. and some of you better start listening to joe b and watching more of video's. get over the suit and glasses and LISTEN!!!!
I think Zakk has gotten lazy over the years. You can look up his guitar solo with Ozzy on the No Rest for the Wicked tour, and look up his solo for the last BLS DVD and you can see that he still has a lot of the same passages he used in 1988. I think he is at a point where he isn't trying to break new ground. He is giving everybody what they expect, a fast, over-the-top shredder, so he does the same things over and over. When he left Ozzy, he broke new ground, at least as far as his playing goes. I saw a guitar clinic of him right after the No More Tours Tour, with Scott Travis playing drums, and they played southern rock all night, with the exception of "War Pigs." Pride and Glory was his southern rock band not long after that, where he played banjo as well as guitar. Now it seems that he isn't interested in trying new things musically. As far as the arrangement and vocal, neither this video, the Skynyrd version, nor the Clapton versions are like the original by Robert Johnson, so I think the song is subject to different interpretations, which is okay.
nolasludge Finally someone who gets "it". Zakk has become a "character" of himself. That has made him lazy. He needs a new look and a new vibe. He needs to push himself.
TAYLOR: who are you talking to about Clapton writing crossroads? If it's me, I said nowhere that he did, only that he is widely known and praised for his version. And I would bet I was listening to Robert jhnson before you were born!! Hell Hounds on yer trail brutha! :)
***** Its a blues originally. Robert Johnson wrote it. This is a Freddie King tribute concert why is this Wylde dork even allowed in. Let alone on stage. He's a dick and you are easily pleased!
endrizo Or you could just realize that music can be anything you want it to be and the canned expectations of others aren't worth the 4kb it takes to store their comment.
It's kinda funny,if you consider how these 2 guys evolved as guitarplayers over the years.Zakk use to write melodic solos, like on ''No More Tears'' and had a powerfull tone.Nowadays,he just plays superfast pentatonics, without sense for phrasing or melody, his tone is horrible, overcompressed and with shitloads of effects and his constand use of pinch harmonics has become a frequent joke.Bonamassa on the other hand, use to overplay and show off, when he was younger but now he has matured. He knows when to hold back and when to go into full ''shred-mode' and his solos are always very tasteful'.The contrast between the 2 of them,on this performance couldn't be more great.
daniel moore Playing superfast pentatonics up and down the neck, with a crapton of distortion and a dozen pedals like Zakk does nowadays,is neither difficult nor anything special. I would give away both of my nuts though,in order to be able to play like Gary Moore or Rory Gallagher. Rory could wipe the floor with both these guys here and he was using a beat up Strat,a Vox combo and a tube screamer, analog delay and chorus, that was it.
+greekfreak1980 I have no retort to that my friend. I just love Zakk. He's the reason I picked up an axe. We all have our heroes. He's mine. While he plays pentatoncis fast all over the neck, he does it well. Thanks for the response and have a stellar evening.
What 12 pedals is Zakk running? I only know of maybe 4-6? Half of those are his signatures. Father Dunlop wouldn't endorse someone who isn't a guitar god. Just saying. Thanks again.
people make me laugh saying this and that about how players play the same thing over and over etc! isnt that what music is about, if one person did everything then would there be any point in having music genre's? its funny becuase joe did the egsact licks as he usually does and zakk did the same licks as he usually does over jammin to something. just the people that sit at home playing call of duty eating pizza doing fuck all with there lifes who cant scratch the surface of these two guys like to post hate which is funny!! LOL!
God Damn! All the Critics! Do you understand you're judging Zakk on an Ad libbed guitar solo, without rehearsal? Do you even know how difficult it is to just pop in with a rig that normally isn't in the mix? You can tell just by how Joe's sound is set perfectly, while Zakk's isn't in the mix as well! I'm not taking away from Joe Bonamassa by any means. He's Great, plain and simple! I hate how some of you talk of Zakk Wylde as though you are in the same league as him! Zakk has done more to date than most All the guitar players out there! With the exception of a few he's at the top of the hill. Besides, Zakk Wylde wasn't there to "School" Joe Bonamassa! He's not the type of person who looks at playing like some kind of contest! Ridiculous !!!!
Forget about the tone, his licks were totally inappropriate. If he played the same thing on his own set, it would have sounded just as horrible. I don't know much about metal but playing mindlessly fast is childish and shows lack of understanding of the blues genre.
Good on you Aaron... It doesn't really matter all these haters will never know what it is to be out of the bedroom.. Both these blokes are having a great time doing what they do...
why the hell is Joe sharing the stage with Zakk? Zakk is a disgrace, and plays with no feeling at all. He lives by the whole "fast is better" motto. Joe, plays with style and soul and grace. Bravo, Joe. Looking forward to seeing you again soon
***** Boy? I watched your crap too! Please Zakk isn't a slouch, you dipshit! Two different guitar players and it isn't a competition, You need to practice a bit before you talk shit!
Zakk plays with a lot of feeling. Go watch his Pride and Glory stuff. Joe is sharing the stage with Zakk because he is a true musician. You have to appreciate all styles for what they are. Zakk is an amazing blues guitarist when he wants to be. All you're doing is proving you know nothing about Zakk past his BLS stuff.
***** how the hell can you say that there is no difference between a guitar player or another? All guitar players are different. Yeah they may take ideas from others, but they are still their own unique player. you are a fool
It's called playing outside the box. Slipping into a modal scale. LOL And then most likely wasn't looking at the neck and his fingers were in the wrong place. Don't think he was out of it. I read he had to quit drinking, doctor's orders. Then again he might have fell off the wagon.
jim jameson At 1:45 Zakk is playing in the wrong key for a few seconds, and he realizes it and finds the key again. there may be more but who can tell?
I love them both, but I have to say Joe's tone sounded so much cleaner and clearer. His sound was amazing. Zakk, on the other hand sounded rather sloppy and his first solo sounded kinda random, nothing compared to Joe.
I'd have to go with Joe on this one... I listen to many players who stand in with other musicians and improvise unrehearsed all the time. A standard like Crossroads does not need to be rehearsed. Joe incorporates improvisation in his music all the time where as Zakk Wylde plays mostly the same sets and solos from gig to gig(at least when he was with Ozzy, but I have not kept up with Zakk since then). Yes, some tweaking of the front-of-house mix could have improved his overall sound, but he was using his tone from his fingers and amps which to me sounded not nearly as articulate and clear as Joe's. I'm not trying to be negative towards Zakk here, but if you really watch and listen when Zakk starts speed picking, the notes become jumbled, sloppy, and his timing between his picking hand and fretting hand are off. I can't hear the notes clearly and he plays out of key. How fast someone plays does not impress. It is what they play, accuracy, and the feeling behind it that matters. When Joe speed picks, it is very articulate and you can here every note and an actual melody. There is no sloppiness, or out of key playing. Joe has more feeling in his playing as well. When they duel back and forth, Zakk has a hard time keeping up with Joe's speed picking and goes for a more laid back approach. Just being honest with what I see and hear.
Well put. You didn't destroy Zakk, as most viewers did. However these two players shouldn't have been on the same stage, and I feel sorry for Zakk. Unfortunately that doesn't change, they don't belong in the same league
Music is life. Love isn't a competition, neither is life. We are alive together on this weird journey only once(as far as I know), and together we stand. Playing guitar poorly as long as I have, the connection during moments like these playing music together, etches it's mark on my soul with a feeling I cannot describe with words, forever. Life is tough without music for me, and I want to savor every moment I can experience it's joy. For me, savoring each moment is an extremely difficult achievement on a good day. So at this moment I am grateful to live, or have lived at a time when the blues, electric guitars, and a few exceptional people have allowed us to listen to their souls.
1:45 fail (Is a blues in A not in A-sharp :-)) )... JB is one of the best.. Love his sound on a Gibson.. Amazing tone..A few licks from Eric Johnson ¡¡
I did not even notice that, but looking at the video, it seem's he was playing it on the 18th fret. I couldn't even tell, because his playing really does not fit the underlying music IMHO. His solo was so random...
Zakk's inability to phrase is exposed here. No substance. This isn't "genre" thing, every city has local guitar players who are further developed than him. #truth
