One of the best fight scenes in movie history. Beautifully shot and choreographed down the finest detail. I always find it amazing that foreign films can do such a great job of showcasing strong (yet feminine) women while Hollywood continues to be so clumsy and hamfisted with their attempts.

No negative comparison intended, it's just that The Green Destiny is ungodly sharp and indestructible in the lore. Literally every weapon is scrap metal if faced head on. That way any warrior who possessed it, whether a rookie or a veteran, would gain a crazy amount of of power in record time. That said, it would've been fun to see a teenage Anakin armed with a lightsaber being defeated by Qui Gon armed with a Tuskan Raider's Gaffi stick. Edit: Y'know just to show that just having a lightsaber isn't the end-all to every martial arts. (I'm looking at you Disney trilogy)

Outskilled her pretty hard, too. You can tell her main difficulty in the fight was that she was still unwilling to hurt Zhang Ziyi's character but she wouldn't listen to reason and the only tools left were deadly weapons. The final exchange with the big sword makes it as obvious as possible but she still doesn't get the hint.

Still, Yeoh's character seems to go through a subtle decline in confidence (or increase in panic) as she changes weapons. She goes from confidently grabbing the spear without even looking to running for the club as she is being pursued. It's reflected in her fighting too: going from a poised and elegant set of swords, to a precise and powerful spear, to the hooks that she's using to contain the Green Destiny as much as attack her opponent, to going absolutely caveman with the club. Their little banter after the club is destroyed gives her a chance to not only find her next weapon but to find her center again, which leads to her effectively winning the fight. Really good stuff!

Okay, what I'm about to say has ALREADY been said in some of the comments down below(more than likely😊). Looking at Yeoh's & Ziyi's characters and we see the contrasts: Old vs. Young, Experience vs. Inexperience, Lower/Middle Class vs. Upper Class. Yet with those differences, so to speak, we see two ladies throw down in an awesome fight scene. Side Note: If my math is correct, this movie is twenty years old and it doesn't look it. Another reason to love this scene is that BOTH Yu and Lien hold their own against each other. While Yu has the green sword of destiny that doesn't automatically favor her, in the same way having age & experience doesn't favor Lien either. I view the fight as a draw. Yes, technically, Yu does "beat" Lien...but not by much. I look at Yu's immense skill and talent and wonder where she could've gone if trained under the guidance of Li Mu Bai. She surpassed(easily) her master, Jade Fox. Damn, freaking great movie!
