Watch this crow help a deer get rid of ticks! This is an amazing symbiotic relationship between two animals that helps them to survive and thrive.
Did you know that crows are one of the most intelligent bird species? They are known for their intelligence, tool use, and ability to form symbiotic relationships with other creatures. This video shows how a crow helps a deer get rid of ticks, a symbiotic relationship that helps both of them survive and thrive.
Symbiosis is any type of close and long-term biological interaction between two different biological organisms, be it mutualistic, commensalistic, or parasitic. Commensalism describes a relationship between two living organisms where one benefits and the other is not significantly harmed or helped. It is derived from the English word commensal, used of human social interaction.

Crows can make and use tools. They remember patterns and quickly learn puzzles. They can be taught to speak. They are incredible learners and I'm certain we're only scratching the surface on how far a symbiosis would go if we researched that relationship. Crows are probably the most intelligent and most developed bird on the planet, and we often completely overlook them.

I misread - I thought you meant there were no ticks on otherparts of the deer's body. So I wrote a long reply questioning your reasoning. Then I re-read your comment and realised it was me being a tit, not you. However . . . . perhaps the crow doesn't know the ticks aren't part of the deer. I think people even with all the evidence still believe birds are just birds and not as intelligent as they truly are. There are crows everywhere around me because some nest in the siding of my roof and everyday I catch the same exact group sitting on the same wire above the back yard all talking and squeaking together and then they always literally all dart off at the same exact time toward wherever they are going as if they literally just had a meeting and planned what they are about to do for the day. Shit is fascinating

Growing up in the US midwest, we'd always check the dog's ears for ticks on return from some forest or field jaunt; kinda like cleaning up the boat after a cruise. Lots of blood close to the surface there, and it seems the ticks could find it.

Some studies on oxpeckers have actually revealed that this relationship isn’t always very symbiotic. Its often in the bird’s best interest to allow ticks to swell up very large before plucking, and at that size they would have probably fallen off soon anyway. Furthermore tick wounds picked by birds take longer to heal. Idk about deer, but with large mammals like rhinos the prevailing theory is that ox-peckers and other birds like them are tolerated because they provide an early warning system for predators.
