Hi a while ago I asked if you could react to tangerine by Led Zeppelin and Mona Lisa’s and mad hatters. You hearted the comment. Are you planning on doing that video??
Thanks Jamel for playing my request, the song came out in 1987. Please check out some of their other classic songs too. I love the song 'better be home soon' too
If you haven't heard it yet, here's great old one: Harry Nillson "Put the Lime in the Coconut" : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VQ0hrHx4Zkc.html
You cant underestimate the nostalgia this song produces in all Australians and Kiwis around the world :) Shout out to my peeps across the Tasman lol. We'll see you again soon!
So true, this is why I am often disappointed when people doing reactions don't look up the info about bands and where they come from or where they were formed. That feeling of nostalgia and pride (plus a little sadness) is "something so strong". Thanks for your comment! From an Aussie
One the greatest love songs ever written. Lucky enough to have seen them live 3 times. Gifted musicians all yet self deprecating and funny! Neil Finn is one the greatest ever
RIP Paul Hester. If you feel like life is getting too much for you, reach out, talk to someone, don't try to carry it all by yourself. You are loved. You'd be surprised by how much you are loved.
Sadly, there are many out here who get left on read and whose phone calls are ignored, whose pain is dismissed as "playing the victim," who do not have supportive family or friends. Life can really hand you your a$$. But yours is a nice comment for sure. Namaste
Still remember Neil Finn's incredible tribute to him at the 2005 Aria awards where he came on stage and sang better be home soon in his memory. Still brings a tear to the eye.
Every time I hear this song, I can't help but think of Crowded House's drummer, Paul Hester and his long, futile fight against the black dog of depression. RIP Paul
Every time I hear that song I get the exact feelings I had at the time, during a turbulent relationship with the love of my life. It didn’t work out, in the end. Not everyone gets to live happily ever after. But I’ve had a good fulfilling life, in any case and I’m content. But this song gave me such strength in the day. It still does. But I can’t listen to it too often.
A few months ago, I was going through a really bad depression and I was on the point of giving up. Suddenly, my MP3 player kept playing this song. It gave me enough hope to keep going.
Glad to see you Didn’t Give Up!!! There is a REASON your MP3 player kept playing this song over and over. You have someone watching over you and didn’t even realize it!!! Trust me, I’ve dealt with depression for over 20 years now.Your still here because your needed!! Always remember that:)🙏🙏
I was on a tour for ANZAC Day. On the way back from the Dawn Service at Gallipoli one of the Kiwis pulled out the Best Of album. Perfect end to a sombre and reflective day with our cross Tasman brethren.
I had no idea that this band was Australian! I grew up hearing this song and just automatically assumed they were British (because they sound British in the song which was always being played in the UK). Still learning new things every day!
Yes! If you need help with Aussie suggestions I'm a minefield of randomness from Easybeats through to the tea party. Love our music scene. And yes NZ ain't no slouch. Headless Chickens Gascrankin station still is a car karaoke fave
Neil, was asked, before COVID, of all the artists in the world, to join Fleetwood Mac, which he agreed to. Would also like to send a shout out to Crowded House's drummer, Paul Hester, who sadly took his own life. R.I.P. Paul
Seeing Neil play with Fleetwood Mac was incredible - one of the best gigs I’ve ever seen. RIP Paul, such a light with such a troubled soul gone far to soon
This song means home to me, I legitimately get just a bit choked up whenever I sit to really listen to it. Aussies and Kiwis completely unite over this band, they made so much incredible music.
They're still making it! There's a different lineup now (Neil Finn, Nick Seymour the original bassist, Mitchell Froom on keyboards - he produced the first 3 Crowded House albums & played keyboards on them, and Neil's sons Liam on guitar & backing vocs & Elroy on drums. And their NEW ALBUM called Dreamers Are Waiting comes out JUNE 4: depending where you live that's either TOMORROW or THE NEXT DAY! They toured New Zealand a couple months ago. They were also scheduled to tour more countries but those were postponed due to coronavirus. If you want to hear some really fantastic (aka finntastic) music, Neil did a lot of livestreams (for a while he did them every day!) during coronavirus - his songs, covers, answering listener questions, once he took a call from Mick Fleetwood (I'm not a fan of FM but it's cool for their fans), botany/gardening, his 4 yr old grandson Buddy making appearances talking & playing trumpet - sometimes Neil alone (those were my favorite) sometimes assisted by his sons, and post-quarantine Nick & Mitchell (Nick is wonderful). They're archived on neilfinn.com: click on FANGRADIO.
American here, saw these guys live in San Francisco, 1987, in a small club, with a girl who ended up being my girlfriend for almost 7 years. A lot of nostalgia for this song, and the whole album. Amazing concert
Neil Finn and Crowded House have provided the soundtrack to my life for over 30 years. Beautiful, joyful, inspiring, heartfelt... I'm so glad you liked it, and I hope you check out more of their songs.
Here's another one. Imagine someone writing this for you, and singing it to you. "Tie my hands behind my back Put a gag on top of my mouth But I won't give you up Till silverware's covered in dust And my shoes fall apart And the tumbleweed runs Over my desert heart So turn and run You cold killers of innocence Against us there's no defence Your flash and your wickedness Will surely bring you down again Somehow we must stay afloat Won't give in to the undertow Something's you will never know You can't break our love You can pull us down But you can't break our love" (Turn and Run by Neil Finn)
Neil Finn is the main songwriter for Crowded House. Years ago an interviewer asked Paul McCartney what it was like to be the best songwriter of all time and he said "I'm not. Neil Finn is". Gave me goosebumps. Better Be Home Soon is my favorite.
@@geekchick4859 - maybe you dreamt it then because no such interview exists! If it did, you’d be able to find some evidence via our friends at Google. If you check out any of the Crowded House/Finn forums, such as Frenz.com, you’ll find this has come up plenty of times and been comprehensively debunked. Macca’s even been asked about it. Edit: Maybe you need to hear it directly from Macca? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6tjAo3v4Fis.html
@@thomasm195 I stumbled onto "don't dream it's over" with Neil Finn on acoustic guitar accompanied by a string section and it got me through the lockdowns of last year. That rendition of this song is just so beautiful.
Neil did a solo performance of Better be Home soon at the ARIA awards dedicated to Paul after he died. The video is on you tube just search Paul Hester tribute. So sad. You could tell on his face he as trying so hard not to cry.
I totally agree Depression is hideous disease RIP Paul. The concert they had on the opera house steps was their best ever live performance without a doubt.
yea his suicide was sad for sure. But the band is still up and playing they even have new music ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lDFi1mmZcC0.html
New Zealander here, that song is iconic in New Zealand. I watched your face the whole time, with a huge smile on mine!!! I love how you appreciated it the way we do :D If I can recommend another Neil Finn song, Message to my girl. This was written while he was in Split Enz with his brother, Tim. Its possibly the perfect song :D
"There's a battle ahead.. many battles are lost.. but you'll never see the end of the road while you're traveling with me" This has always struck me so deep~ what an amazing way to tell someone you're there for them #gotyour6
Neil Finn is such an amazing singer. I’ve loved him since he was with Split Enz through his solo career and now he’s with Fleetwood Mac. This song came out around the time my uncle died, a Vietnam vet. It always reminds me that despite it all people stay with us. Thank you Jamal. ❤️
That's coincidental because I also lost an uncle around that time who also was a Vietnam veteran. Cancer caused by agent orange exposure took its toll.
Paul Stanley once said that someone isn't a songwriter if a song doesn't rhyme. I wish someone would tell him that Paul McCartney and Neil Finn are the 2 greatest songwriters alive. There are rhymes in this song, and there aren't and it's one of the greatest songs ever written. This opinion comes from a heavy metal lover. My favorite bands are AIC and Megadeth. Crowded House is one of the greatest bands of all time!
@@dannybaldridge3529 I’m sorry for your loss. The agent orange caused heart damage to my uncle. He sought help from the VA so many times and didn’t receive it in time. I’m not badmouthing the VA as every male member of my paternal side has served this great country.
Neil wrote this for his wife when they were struggling in life. One of my life flexes is the Finns are my cousins and ive heard covers of their songs from around the world and its so nice to see. Thanks for show casing this
My dad played bass in local bands for fifty years. One of his favorites. Glad you mentioned that bass line. Something inside me expands when I hear this one. 💗
I just love the absolute joy on your face when you hear these songs for the first time. As we have just grown up hearing artists like Crowded House and John Farnham we dont really appreciate how deep their messages were. Keep up the great work and the positive vibes you are bringing to people. Don't under estimate the joy you are bringing to people and opening up their minds.
Agreed. I'm a huge fan of Neil & Crowded House and this song never fails to move me no matter how many times I hear it, BUT watching this video made me feel even more emotional about it than I usually do. I was very choked up. Plus I LOVED his reaction to Nick on bass because to me he's kind of an unsung hero of the band. I love his personality and I think he brings out some wonderful qualities in Neil on stage. :D
A real tear jerker is Neil Finn performing “Better Be Home Soon” at the 2005 Aria Awards in memory of Crowded House drummer Paul Hester, who took his own life on 26 March 2005.
I saw Crowded House a couple of weeks ago at their concert in Auckland, New Zealand. Fantastic, and the magic is still here after 30+ years of their music. Thanks for playing this.
I saw their "Farewell to the World" concert on November 24, 1996 on the forecourt of the Sydney Opera House. One of the best concerts I've ever experienced.
R.I.P Paul Hester!! Don't Dream It's Over still gives me goosebumps whenever I hear it now just like when I was child, and the inspirational message in the lyrics helped me get through a lot of tough times.
I can't think of any bands I dislike more than FM. I hope they decide to retire so he's done with that. I'd be happy if he stayed with Crowdies, or did more solo albums, or Finn Bros, or 7 Worlds Collide, or something he hasn't done yet - a duo with Don McGlashan.
It kinda hurts now, we all thought Paul was the joker, happy guy.... and well, he was overcompensating. Still a fave, but like better be home soon, so different now
Neil Finn is from my hometown. I remember being a kid maybe 8 or 9 sitting in my bedroom window listening to them play their farwell tour as Split Enz at Albert Park before going on to form Crowded House. Needless to say their music has always had a special place in my life, formative even. Te Awamutu, NZ's Rosetown, in Waipa Distlrict, The Home Of Champions.
With darn good reason. They invaded the music scene with their fresh sound and beautiful lyrics. I saw them twice, once in a stadium and once in an acoustically perfect theater. Still one of my favourite performances of all time because of their pure, intimate stage presence.
Now I’m walking again, to the beat of a drum, and I’m counting the steps to the door of your heart....just a great lyric. One of my favorite songs from the 80s
@@scottboswell6406 Even though I'd heard this song probably hundreds of times, I never picked up that that line was a nod to Across the Universe ("words are flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup...") An interviewer mentioned it in conversation with Neil. Definite Doh! moment for me ha ha. Neil said Across the Universe is the song he most wishes he'd written.
Their farewell concert was one of the most special moments of my teens. Such a wonderful vibe, so bittersweet and such a community feeling. The love was huge.
I’m a bass player and I learned this song about a year ago for my cover band. It blew me away how powerful the bass was underneath such a beautiful melody. First comment by Jamel; “that bass!”
@@DreamsSketcher I understand that because the lyrics are hopeful but the tone of the song and pace always made me sad as a kid. The song reminds me when a bad period of time is brand new and thats when uncertainty, change is at its highest and you have no hope at the time so you say "don't dreams it over." to keep you going in a era of your life. The Beach Boy's "Wouldn't it be nice." Is actually one of the saddest songs around even though it sounds like a light hearted love song. It's about how he could wish he was in a long lasting and loving relationship that's probably never going to happen. Songs of hopefulness can carry sadness to it as well but I love "Don't dream its over." for the emotions it triggers in me.
Brothers Tim and Neil Finn are incredible song writers/musicians. Neil is currently a touring member of Fleetwood Mac. He took over from Lindsey. ❤️Four Seasons In One Day is another beauty from Crowded House.
Fleetwood Mac has gone thru numerous changes while I was growing up. They were all good...at the time, but the original is my favorite, this many years later. My first ever experience getting caught up in a riot is when the police pulled the plug on them, right in the middle of a song.! NOT COOL, TEAR GAS IS UNPLEASANT!! C'mon man, let there be rock 😎 or we will voice our grievances ! 1972 Stockton, Ca
Man, more classic 80's memories...miss those days! I think the saying was, "you've got to go through 'hell' before you get to 'heaven' ". Steve Miller on "Jet Airliner" references this!
I remember buying this LP at the record store right after it came out. I’d have friends to my house (1980s) getting high and drunk, while most of us were sitting on the floor, with my pups, listening to this album on repeat. Sometimes we’d sing along. Good times. Thanks for the reminder Jamal and whoever made the request.
definite second on ALL of those: WEATHER WITH YOU, IT'S ONLY NATURAL i have to be in the right mood for Four Seasons in One Day--it tends to get to me--but it is a great song
FSIOD is my favorite song. DDIO & Weather are up there too. I like It's Only Natural a lot too but there are so many great and good songs by NF they can't all be favorites! :D
My favourite group of all time, singing my favourite song of all time, this song saved me from a very dark place once upon a time, glad you enjoyed it too..
Couldn’t agree more. Though they only had one other big hit with “Something So Strong” from the same album. Having lived in New Zealand in the early 90’s I was exposed to all of their music. It’s all great! My personal favorite album is Together Alone.
Their farewell and return concerts at the Sydney Opera House were second to none. Absolute perfection. Bass player is Nick Seymour, brother of Mark Seymour, lead singer of Hunters & Collectors. Another criminally underrated Aussie band.
Thanks for mentioning H&C. I met Mark and John Archer briefly, after a gig in a small club here in Hollywood around the time of The Jaws of Life. After that, I'd see them play in small clubs. I wore a black chauffeur's cap and stood in the front row. Mark Seymour would grab it off my head and wear it for about three songs, then put it back. This happened at two different shows. Lots of fun. It was insane to be interacting with Hunters and Collectors while they were playing, but I realized he is one of those guys who always looks soooo serious, but is actually quite funny. When they did Say Goodbye, Mark leaned over and screamed the line "You don't make me feel like a woman anymore!" right in my face. I think he was wearing my hat at the time. Those were the days.
Bro - you should hear this song live. It literally fills your heart with joy and you can see the smiles on the faces on the people around you. Lyrically, an absolute masterpiece and what music should be.
Truly one of the finest pop songs ever recorded. Contains one of my all-time favorite lyrics: "In the paper today, tales of war and of waste... but you turn right over to the TV page." Great choice, Jamel.
National treasures for us New Zealanders! Brilliant musicians and Neil Finn is an outstanding songwriter. Thanks for appreciating this and bringing back soo many memories for me. Peace.
The precursor to Crowded House was Split Enz, another worthy band with the Finn Brothers. Ghost Girl, I Got You, or One Step Ahead are good songs to react to.
Considering they transitioned from their Split Enz identity days into Crowded House...for me it fascinates and so powerful and I love both. Thanks for experiencing this heart deep power ballad💕"hey now" forever💗
Crowded House was my first concert and I was so overwhelmed being part of huge amount, all there because we love the same thing. Nothing beats being part of a concert. Thank you for listening to this song, such wonderful memories for me. Take care of yourself please, Mate
What a great song! Thank you Jamel, you have such a great spirit to you, we are all brothers in music. Music is the lubricant of Humanity. Merci from Canada
The first time I've clicked 'like' before I watched the video. How many other Kiwis here? Lots more amazing songs by Crowded House. Hope you'll do some more. Weather With You, Better Be Home Soon, Four Seasons in One Day...
Neil Finn is a master song writer. Better Be Home Soon is a unofficial anthem here in NZ. Split Enz and Crowded House were my first concerts. The CH were always fun and emotional. Rip Paul Hester, you gave teenage me a love of not just music but especially live music. The Finns are kiwi music royalty. Both have sons who have music out, Liam had a band Betchadupa and Harper has a song getting a lot of radio play at the moment.
Crowded House have been one of my favorites forever, I would see them in concert whenever possible and Neil Finn on his own as well......absolutely love their music!
They just toured NZ this spring and will be touring more countries when coronavirus permits. Their new album called Dreamers Are Waiting comes out JUNE 4!
As an Aussie who's had the pleasure of seeing these guys live in Perth, Thank You for bringing it to a greater audience. Amazing song, amazing band, epic channel!
