Bloodstained. An entire episode could be dedicated to it, to be honest. Especially when you take into consideration the 8bit game they made prior to the main game. And the upcoming sequel. I daresay it deserves the Crowd-Fund Crown.
Hi friend, wanna buy some ginsu laser knives ? Just for you and just for a short time. And you can do some may useful things with it. Cutting things or sticking it in your enemies, or cutting things or sticking them into your friends or use it as a spoon, so that you don't need spoons any more and can use those to stick them in your wife. And that's not all, if you buy them know from me, I'll provide you with a ton of hired enemies, you can use to stick your ginsu laser knives in. What do you say ? Deal ?
So, Yooka Laylee has a character named TROUSER, who is a SNAKE? And there was no joke about it? Where's Dave when we need him? EDIT: Apparently he's running the camera.
Paprium is one of best brawlers with the best gameplay on any system, I love the great soundtrack, the artwork and the futuristic cyberpunk-atmosphtheere of this huge 80meg-masterpiece!
I lost my money on PAPRIUM as well. At the time I requested a refund several times during the update process, but they never replied anywhere. It was too late for me to back out. A PayPal employee revealed to me Watermelon's PP Business account never got frozen in the first place after he looked into it. I don't know if this is true or not. However.. it's a shame Fonzie rammed thos project into the ground. I was truely hyped and excited for this game. Everything looked and sound too promising to be true.
Ya, I even bought the Switch version just to have a physical copy because I loved it so much. Although the switch version has a bug during the shooter level where it ignores your control settings just does default button layout...
that hilarious post credits short video though... a take on all those Nintendo Switch coverage channels that they only do it for the clicks and views, they know themselves really well 😂
Rain World in my opinion is one of the best examples of crowdfunding a video game done right! Ups and Downs throughout but they kept backers up to date all the way through! great game and OST too :D
11:41 "There are many many cutscene back to back. And you need to skip each and every segment." The option to go to the next stage is literally right below the one you are selecting...
It's nice to see Freedom Planet and Timespinner (because I saw Lunais from the game in the thumbnail) in this episode though. I remember playing those games months ago on PC actually.
Bloodstained. 'Nuff said. Seriously that's all that does need to be said, however, to expand upon that, the Kickstarter generated an 8bit spin off which was excellent, and a sequel. A freakin' sequel!
I paused this ep halfway through to go buy TimeSpinner on Steam and ended up playing for over an hour before I came back to finish the video. Thanks for the recommendation!
I absolutely love Yooka Laylee. I got the Platinum trophy and I'm sad there's no DLC. Impossible Lair is a good game too but I'd love a fully blown sequel.
As someone who's enjoyed their time with Symphony of the Night, thanks for letting me know about Timespinner Another crowdfunded game I greatly enjoyed was CrossCode! It's an action RPG, similar to 2D Zelda titles but much more mechanically complex and with a deep engaging story - hope you get to check it out someday
Cross Code comes out on consoles this week. I'm excited for that. It's been such a long wait. Seeing how Major Lee swooned over the game is what sold me on it.
I got one for you Joe, kinda pre-Kickstarter, gaming hardware, the Atari 7800 XM add-on. Crowdfunded on Atariage since 2010 I believe, still isn’t out although some devs received an almost finished product these past few months.
Agree. I bought it last month on PS4 and it's really good. Didn't play the original as I don't like Banjo-Kazooie, but this new game is great, it's almost like playing DKC4
You're actually the first person that still neutral when he have to talk about Paprium Gg we know it wasn't easy at all and I give you a thumb up for that (thing that I do very rarely)
If you like Paper Mario, you gotta check out Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling. It's a spiritual successor to the first two Paper Mario Games, and it's amazing!
Fight N' Rage was made by a single person (plus musician) in a third world country with no budget. Paprium might never come out, despite the funding and talent behind it. I can't help but think there's a bunch of behind the scenes shenanigans with Paypal and fundraisers plus the endless superfluous extra tiers that have developers focusing on rewards rather then the game itself. And let's not pretend there's not a whole industry of predators who approach people who luck into money to "manage" or "invest" their newfound wealth.
Fight N Rage is actually better than Streets of Rage 4, whcih is crazy to me. SOR4 is good, but Fight N Rage feels like a full blown Capcom beat em up that continues from where Streets of Rage 3 left off.
Man did I ever love Road Rash back in the day. Me and my best friend were absolutely obsessed with it. I hesitate to go back and play it these days though as I'm not sure it would feel the same and might taint those great memories
Okay, so coming from a huge Rare/Banjo-Kazooie fan (even played the GBA game) I absolutely love Yooka-Laylee. The game still has the Rare charm and appeal. I feel this game doesn't really appeal to people who don't enjoy collectathons or Metroidvania style games. The music is fantastic and I feel as if you didn't understand it the genius behind it. The transitions behind the music and many variations that it can give you within the same world is superb! The only thing I do agree is that the camera needs some work. Its not awful but it feels like last PS2 early PS3 camera. The dialogue between characters is great and charming and has the infamous Rare innuendos. The game isn't ground breaking like Super Mario 64 and I definitely don't think that was the creators aim. Its more of modern take on 3D platforming. Is the game 10/10, no not at all. I do give it a solid 8 though. I think the major disappointment from fans is that they expected this game to redefine 3D platforming and be revolutionary like 90's Rare. I think thats why fans of BK felt so disappointed and Im sure that wasn't Playtonics goal.
I love 3D collectathons but I just found Yooka Laylee quite boring and the levels felt really empty. I'd never played Banjo before, I had a Playstation growing up, so maybe I wouldn't like those two games or Conker's Bad Fur Day either, I'll have to emulate them and find out. I do really really like the Yooka Laylee 2D platformer though. It's an absolute instant classic, if you love the Donkey Kong Country games then you'll love this too. It's as good as if not better than DKC Tropical Freeze, which is also a fantastic game. I am gonna give the original Yooka Laylee another proper try however. I'll probably buy it again for Switch and see how I feel because I tend to play my switch almost exclusively now, I barely touch my gaming PC anymore, so I'll give it another good shot that way. But yeah there's tons of 3D platformer collectathon games for the Switch now so I'm having a lot of fun with them, like obviously Mario Odyssey which is incredible, Super Lucky's Tale which is really charming, the best 3D platformer ever Spyro 3 (plus the first 2 which are also great), A Hat In Time, the Spongebob one that was just remastered and released, the Crash Bandicoot trilogy (if that counts, it's a 3D platformer with stuff to collect and the ability to 100% it if you want), . And we can hope and pray that Nintendo will release some of the other Mario games like 64 and Sunshine, the rumours of that aren't going away. And hey, be patient, and we may very well see the Rare Replay collection come out for Switch eventually anyway, with the Banjo games and Conker's Bad Fur Day on it, seeing as Nintendo and Microsoft have a partnership now and have already released a bunch of games that originally were exclusive to the Xbox (+PC) like Cuphead and Ori and the Blind Forest. And we got Banjo in Smash Ultimate already.
I have recently picked up both Yooka-Laylee and Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair on sale on PSN, only £15 GBP for both so was happy to give the games a try for that price. I am currently playing YL and am enjoying it. I never played Banjo Kazooie up until a few years ago after picking it up for N64 and really enjoyed that, so this game is great for the nostalgia. It's got a few little issues but I don't mind. Also the dialogue is actually pretty funny!! 8/10
You get extremely bored when playing Banjo Kazooie type games but you can play repetitive shooters like Gradius or Space Harrier all day long and not get bored. Makes total sense.
Nice episode. Here 2 years in the future *spoiler* looks like Paprium actually came out. Now it goes for $1000. Crazy. I now can look forward to that episode that Joe promised if it ever came out.
@@DanielDangerous Ben Judd has a tendency to "exaggerate" his translations. It makes me suspect his translations for Koji Igarashi as well, which is interesting because eventually IGA got a new translator in Mana... Who also did the Bloodstained's cover art.
uh, Joe, in Freedom Planet, there's an option called Next Stage right below the Skip Scene so you don't have to skip each and every scene before going to the next level, also, if you want to play without cutscenes at all, there's the Arcade Mode in the main menu too.
Yeah, someone else pointed that out and I'm sure more will in the future. The thing is my brain sees "skip cutscene" or whatnot which is exactly what it's looking for, so it doesn't feel the need to look at the rest of the text. Kind of like if I lose my keys, I don't keep looking for them after I found them. I hope that makes sense.
Well, Joe has still convinced me to purchase the game anyway. So Joe missing the "Next Stage" button really doesn't effect his review of the game negatively in my opinion. So I wouldn't worry about it, Freedom Planet looks like a great game and thanks to Joe I will be picking it up today.
I'm pretty sure he gets the joke. It's not exactly subtle. Then again, he doesn't seem very familiar with Rare, so he probably doesn't know that their games are littered with innuendos.
You said Yooka-Laylee had a funding goal of 175 pounds. I assume you meant 175,000 £? Nvm: saw it in the screenshots you showed. Gawd i hope Paprium gets released.
I've seen Timespinner show up in my Steam recommendations but thought it was more like another Indie Metroidvania game Luna Nights which isn't bad, but it just didn't do it for me. I also had made the mistake of trying that one right after Hollow Knight so I deemed it unfairly worse than it is by comparison and therefore deemed all that seemed like it as equally not worth my time. I had no idea Timespinner was closer to Symphony Of The Night. I need to play that now and rectify this mistake.
I've been getting more enjoyment from indie gems such as these than from uber-hyped AAA titles. Thanks for sharing. Can't wait to check out Timespinner!!!!
Crowedfunded games I recommend: -A Hat In Time (highly recommended) -Shantae Half Genie Hero (best one in the series imo) -Mighty No 9 (I believe you already covered this one) -Shinmue 3 (disappointing imo)
@@MegaDeox Probably because they were expecting quite a bit more than what they got. Hype can be good, but can also be bad when they can't live up to it.
I've heard a Ghost Dog reference on a retro video game show. I don't know why, but it just made me happy. This movie has the best soundtrack in the history of media, fite me irl. WU TANG!
Yooka Laylee surprisingly failed to understand and reintroduce many of the design aspects of Banjo-Kazooie, and therefore was not received favourably by the fans at all. There are several detailed analisys videos on the youtube that compare the mechanics and details and explain exactly where YL missed the point.
@@Blueflag04 Theres a separate new YL game that is alright, but its a different genre. The problems with original however are rather fundamental and can't be easily fixed with a patch..
Hey Joe, just wanted to thank you for recommending Timespinner. I absolutely love it! Theres so many indies these days its easy to miss a few gems in the crowd.
Yooka-Laylee 2 the Impossible Lair is perhaps the better game. The first Yooka-Laylee was based on the Banjo Kazooie type of 3D Platform Gameplay while the second game the Impossible Lair is based on the Donkey Kong Country 2D Platform Gameplay. So if you get around to playing that game, you might be surprised how the second game is much more loved than the first which may be the getting back to form from the former RARE developers.
I gave up on Impossible Lair and its rare for me to do that with something I invested time in. I just didn't find anything fun or interesting about the gameplay, after playing a million 2D platformers over the years. I'll take Retros DKC games over that any day. However, I enjoyed the original Yooka Laylee. It was an awful lot like Banjo Kazooie, just as promised. Obviously not as good but it was a solid 3D platformer to me.
Awesome, thanks for the new episode Joe. I will be picking up quite a few new games thanks to this episode. And I will be starting with "Timespinner", love me some SOTN. But "Freedom Planet" and the Road Rash type clone also look great. I will likely pick up "Paprium" as well, if it is ever released, and I hope it does eventually get released. So thanks again Joe, great episode and I will have some new decent games to add to my collection.
I really appreciate Joe's honest and sincere testimony about the switch!! Glad I am not the only one who has a problem getting the damn switch games in and out!!🤣🤣🤣
FINALLY! Some love for Timespinner! Back in like 2015, I used to watch the creator live stream himself on Twitch working on the game and taking input for the game from Chat. Really cool guy
Hi Joe thanks for the content - quality as usual! It would be great if you could list the games featured in the episode within the video description. You could also include time code links to jump straight to where the game is featured. Keep up the great work.
Hello Joe Redifer, I'm a long time viewer/fan of all of you amazing videos and content and of the hard work that you ( and Davie, back when ) have and continue to put into your them. Always super informative, well paced, fun and funny. I honestly look forward to your videos every other Sunday. Your awesome and we love you... And anyone who says they dont is lying, and the probably love you even more than we do. 😏
Just FYI, Kickstarted games rarely cost the amount that was kickstarted, it's usually way more. I've seen titles get tens of thousands through KS, but then cost millions financed through other means. It's not uncommon for bigger titles (and I'm not even talking Shenmue big, more indie than that).
I actually backed Watermelon's Project N (which was their Super Nintendo game) to the tune of like 200$. I wonder how far along that thing got before Watermelon basically vanished. :(
Man I remember Ghost Dog! Cool movie. I never heard anybody else reference it besides the friend who showed it to me long time ago. Leave it ti the Sack.
If you liked Battle Princess Madelyn you should also give their previous game a try, Insanity's Blade. It's pretty good too. Also, Odallus: The Dark Call (different studio, just as amazing).
Great video joe - thanks. Paprium looks amazing - I hope it does come out. Making video games is real hard and even veterans can face hurdles they never knew existed that delay games massively - I still have hope :)
