While I personally would not recommend crowdstrike to anyone (after having experienced massive issues with it in the past), it must be said, that while the root-cause of the problem was crowdstrikes faulty sw-update, the massive outages worldwide are also the responsibility of the IT-departments of the large companies that experience these outages. Many years ago, those comanies would not take an update and install it on all their systems directly. Rather than that, this update would have been tested on a number of systems that are representative to the installed base (in that company) before this update could be copied into the companies own update servers. With that, this faulty update had bricked some testsystems and had then never seen the companies update servers and had never been installed on any important productive system. But, 'cut-down-cost-is-king' ... most companies do not do it the oldfashioned way anymore. At least, for all companies that have experienced outages now, you really can tell, how careless they are.

I'm an old fart who knows just enough tech that I can REALLY screw up MY computer, and I was wondering; why, (if you're a big, important industry, like an airline/s), why wouldn't you have, like, a "dummy" system that gets the updates first and emulates the main system, so you can save the day, instead of pooping your pants. Sorry about the 'run on' sentence. That's just how it comes out, sometimes.
@drewnewby
@drewnewby Месяц назад

Very good question. Responsible enterprises will have a robust IT “change” process that may take days or even weeks to get through. But this kind of update involves cyberthreat protection which needs to be done NOW. These kinds of changes (updates) are likely automated.
@drewnewby
@drewnewby Месяц назад
@robertbutsch1802 Release management doesn't always take days or weeks. Often, it can be done in minutes. Even automated updates are to be vetted. Not a good excuse for this situation.
@Sylvan_dB
@Sylvan_dB Месяц назад
Crowdstrike pushed the update. Customers typically do not control updates like this. I expect Crowdstrike did test the update, as it does not affect every system they did not find the problem before pushing out the update. I hope they can identify a flaw in their testing, but the universe of windows systems is incredibly diverse and it is literally impossible to test every variant. Given the widespread nature of this problem, I expect they will be able to identify additional testing to be performed before future deployments.

Because this is deliberate to get people to accept "the solution" ,, computers and laptops were so much more robust 10 or so years ago,, I bought a laptop in 2006 that was already 3 years old and it was still going in 2012 when i wanted "an upgrade " ,, now i buy a brand new one i absolutely dread doing updates because any update can absolutely fook your hardware up and knackers your computer within 3 to 6 months. Laptops barely last a year now before they slow down and get cluttered with none stop "updates" from the Internet and Microsoft or Linux.

Now Earth's magnetosphere is weak, and becoming more so daily, due to the 1859 Carrington Event, we can expect spaceweather from our star, the Sun, to impact our biosphere and cause very pretty low-latitude aurorae and worldwide grid outages that will not be so readily fixed but instead will send us back to the Stone-Age. No amount of legal cases will help, either.

@drewdam8871
@drewdam8871 Месяц назад
@@lamontjames8156 it is not so much the strength of the solar flares that count, rather its the vulnerability of Earth because of the weakened magnetosphere which would otherwise deflect the incoming spaceweather...

I would love to blame Microsoft for this, they have made some really crappy things but you can’ release a product that’ suppose to cover where MS fails in security and then blame MS for failing in security. They have saved money on testing when they should know that testing is essential. Linux/Mac fan boy here, on MS side.

So now it's Saturday after the worst global IT outage in history and many are saying it could take weeks for every system to be restored to normal working. We are hearing on the news that some end of the month payroll systems may not be able to pay salaries, with the knock-on effect of lots of workers going into default on things like rent, car payments, and mortgage payments. So then i thought, whenever I am notified by a piece of trusted software that an update is available, the first thing I do is create a restore point. I haven't checked, but my Windows 10 PC probably has accumulated many restore points by now. Thankfully, I've never needed to use a restore point to reverse an update. Could it not be made the default, certainly for business computers, to insist on a restore point being created _before_ any update is made? If every affected PC yesterday had had a salient restore point available, maybe the glitch wouldn't have had so many repercussions.

the most surprising fact following from all the news is that a lot of critical infrastructure relies on M$ products. So they were doomed for a success like this ) PS in India eg only airports were reported subjected to this failure, France was not hit that hard cause these countries don't rely much on M$ products in government and critical infrastructure, similar for China, Russia, and other states, you name it ) And well not only linux, and not only fanboys, may celebrate this event ) many bad people may consider this as an opportunity. And also any unix, BSD, apple, android, whatever competitors on the market are, and of course direct competitors like AV and IT security companies may be happy to use this opportunity )

Never a dull day Brian and it always amazes me to find out about companies that seem to breed like rabbits and one never even knows they exist. I have never heard of Crowdstrike and well if it is their input is important to the Microsoft Windows software surely Microsoft has a duty to first make it fail-safe seeing what chaos breakdowns in that particular part of their software can do to whoever is using Windows as their operating system. Plus I gather it was attributed to an update of some sort but I stand to be corrected on that something that you have warned us about many times in the past.
@Paul_Wetor

"The outage stemmed from a recent update to CrowdStrike Falcon Sensor software, according to Microsoft, which affected Windows 365 Cloud PCs. Microsoft is urging customers affected to conduct point-in-time restore for Windows 365 Business and Enterprise." So it sounds like most home users are not affected. P.S. This is a perfect example of why cloud-based software is not always a good idea.

I wouldn't touch the cloud with a bargepole. I'm trying to remove or disable all the intrusive Microsoft spyware and phone home crap, but it's a mammoth task. Britec has shown us the way in a number of videos, and I have a feeling they're going to be called upon to release further videos over the next few weeks. What we need is a minimally invasive installation.

So, when you do a security update, why wouldn't a company run a test run on a room full of the different operating systems they protect that are isolated from the internet to make sure there are no problems with the update before sending the update out. Might save a lot of problems.

That's what you get for using Windows. Windows 11 has a lot of problems though I am not sure if all companies are using 11. Because many won't upgrade and some are still on Windows 10. I use Linux so it does not effect me but I am a bit worried about what will happen if I have to go to the shops. Since their systems may depend on the computers and they probably have Windows. With all the problems that are going on with Windows one would think more people would get the message and switch to Linux by now.

The question I have is, How did this even get out to the cooperate World without some sort of Quality check are they rushing these updates for security reasons are they no Test Benches to run the Update before it goes public, Help me Understand Thanks Brian for your help I'm sure you save a few hundred headaches P.S. In my opinion this is what separates the actual I.T. guys and the coders writing code and not testing it, More collaboration with real world scenario should be in place.

This crowdstrike crapware is mostly enterprise business antivirus not generally for home users. Ironically it's worse than any malware it probably wouldn't have detected in the first place.

Luckily I have taken today off work and so I haven’t had to deal with this. There is always something to catch you out with software. I’m not sure what the fix is if you are using virtual machines. We usually have a test system that is 24 hours in advance of our main systems, but we don’t use automatic updates directly from the network so we may not be impacted. Good update as usual.
