Perhaps it would be better to say exactly what they are. Personally I loathe the manner in which this hymn more than any other has been savaged by inappropriate arrangement and sung in the wrong way and sometimes verging on cheap irreverence. I dont like it any more and no matter what they do to it I think these performances dishonour Christ and make Him something that He is not. Its such a common problem with modern hymns and modern singers trying to sing the words of ancient writers They are not up to it and we will have to live with it after many complaints similar to your own and mine. Crown Him with Many Crowns works on a symbol from the Book of Revelation and it really does not work as anything else especially when you consider what Jesus did when the people tried to make Him king after the miracle. The same goes for the cloying chorus from a modern writer Jesus we enthrone you. That is not the duty of any Christian and until the end of time I do not think anyone will thank us for it . So that's why maybe this hymn and anything else about Jesus as King are so theologically uncertain. His kingdom is not of this world and attempts to make it so before time are doomed. There is no Servant King either except in Kendricks imagination and that said his mind produces in his cliched verses so incongruous an image of Jesus that I think he should sit down and work out exactly who Christ is and what we know about Him from Scripture before launching into the fantastically inaccurate ideas that lace this song and others from his pen. I think we should finally note hymnology is not theology but unfortunately the people behind Contemporary Christian Music do not respect this
