This is an detailed review of the Crown Reef Resort and our most current stay with them. We have been staying at this resort on and off since the early 2000's. Both summer trips and winter trips. The rooms have been remodeled. But I would call this a minor remodel. The kitchen has been remodeled. Most of the furniture has changed, not all for the good. The bathroom area is the same as before. If you have more than 2 people in your room then storage is an issue. Plan on living out of your suitcase. The pools could use some basic maintenance like cleaning tile, emptying the water trap regularly and painting. While we were there one of the out door pools was closed so that only left one outdoor pool for 2 towers worth of people. The hotel has a lot of Jacuzzi's. Unfortunately while we were there 50% of them were closed. They are adding at small water park with flumes. But they appear to be used and old. Pool side chairs and space are an issue. Either get up early at 7am and get your chairs or go without for the day.Even with the maintenance issue's the pool area is still one of the best in Myrtle, when everything is working. They added a really nice bar and restuarant, game room and ice cream shop. So I was confused on how you can spend money on a water park, restaurant, game room and ice cream shop, but not take care of maintenance issue's. The lighting at nigh around the pool is aweful. Most of the lights are out, which can lead to crime. We had a bag stolen from our chair at night, with 2 cell phones and a wallet. The police were not shocked about it because of the poor lighting and no camera's in that area. Rooms are fairly clean, but heard some horror stories from other guest about old food found in their rooms. Hallways are not very clean. Elevators are aweful. Their is a good chance you will get stuck on one like we did. Be prepared to wait 10 minutes or more each time for an elevator. Room maintenance was an issue for us. We had a toilet over flow twice because the valve was bad. It took twice till they decided to change the internal valves. Maintenance was slow to get to the room for the problem and the first maintenance guy who showed appeared to be intoxicated. They hire DJ's for the pool area. The music is played way too loud. And there is no consideration for age appropriate music. Overall, the clientele of the hotel seems to have changed and it doesn't seem to be that friendly of a family environment. We had to keep our patio door closed for a few days because the smell of marijuana was so strong it was coming into our room.
All of that being said. Supposedly there is new management and ownership. I can't tell if that is a good thing or a bad thing. I can you this the onsite management of the facility doesn't show much concern for the guest.
I have spent well over $10,000 at this hotel over the years and we have no plans on returning. Which is an absolute shame because we have so many family memories of this place. It was like a second home to us over the years. I hope they make it better.
