Croydon's lost Canal (1809 -1836) 

That was brilliant......I grew up in Norwood and had no idea about ANY of this..... Always wondered what that small stretch of water was in Betts park......and Norwood lakes!!!! WOW....I had no idea! Thank you for this video...... Makes me want to go back to my old neighborhood and rediscover it 👍

3:16: “In 1866, architect, J.W. Penfold, was commissioned to design a new standardised pillar box. These hexagonal boxes, with the top decorated by acanthus leaves, bud and decorative balls, were produced in three sizes by Cochrane, Grove & Co of Dudley, and were named after its designer. After complaints that letters were getting stuck in the top, the aperture was moved further down in later designs. These hexagonal boxes were issued between 1866 and 1879, with various design changes in this time.” (Liverpool Museums)

We organised a walk/pub crawl along the route of the canal...it was fun but there was tantalisingly little to see...a wall alleged to be part of the canal lock at New X Gate station was demolished when the Overground was extended towards West Croydon around 2010...
