SO true! It really is amazing to see it after having been on modern TVs for so many years. I watched through most of GOT on the Widescreen CRT and it was so great.
I have a quality oled and 4k movies look holographic and 3-dimensional but run a 2d sprite game thru it even with a CRT filter and it looks flat and lifeless.
You don't have to go with a Trini set, Panasonic TAU, JVC I'Art, Toshiba A-Series, are all just as good, if not better in some cases, don't sleep on RCA (Thomson) either, or Hitachi, Sharp, all the Japan made CRTs are crem'da'la'crem, your main concern is getting one with as low hours as possible, if you are ok with a smaller set, PC monitor CRTs are a great option, a 17 or 18 incher can be had for a reasonable amount, and lastly, look into plasmas, they are not by any means a bad alternative to CRTs if you are after a bigger screen for your retro games, keep in mind a plasma will need an OSSC or RetroTink for the quality integer scaling they have to keep 240p games looking crispy.
@@Wobble2007 I would like to add that the Korean ones are good too, mainly LG and Samsung and even Daewoo, especially later models are comparable to Sonys, I have a 2008 Samsung that is my best CRT for sure in terms of picture quality and probably one of the last ever made and a 36inch LG FLATRON from 2006 that is great. Honestly all CRTs are good and an improvement over LCDs for retro games, if the tube is in good shape and not too dim or defective then you're good.
@Wobble2007 hi got a biggish toshiba vintage retro tv of ebay 2 years ago. It's about 32 inch...,...its definitely an upgrade from the smaller toshiba tv. The bigger one looks great on splinter cell 1 on first xbox and chaos theory. Not sure if it's a series or af or some thing.
I found a 32 inch Sony Trinitron on the curb someone was throwing away, its plugged in in my garage with a Super Nes atm where the kids are playing Super Mario World and Donkey Kong Country (don't own many games atm cuz I sold all mine as a kid before they were even born), but man do those games look amazing on that thing. I think its more of a flat screen and the scanlines look incredible, even on a Composite cable the picture is so much clearer than I remember as a kid.
No motion blur is the greatest advantage CRTs have over modern displays at this point in my opinion. I have many options to play my retro consoles, but the CRT is still king.
Well that's just it. CRT's are still king in the motion clarity department, simply because they have no motion blur. And there's zero latency, although games running at 120-144fps on QD-OLED drops input lag down to 5ms, which is good enough imo. Plus 120-144fps cuts down 50-60% of OLED motion blur, which gets you into plasma motion clarity territory. The best you can do with 60fps gaming on QD-OLED like with those HD Clone FPGA consoles like Super Nt, Mega Sg, Duo(etc) or even the original consoles, is by pairing them with an expensive scaler via HDMI or component(HD Retrovision)like the RetroTINK4K, and using it's 60hz BFI(plus HDR to SDR brightness boosting trick to compensate for the 50% drop in brightness by using BFI), which will wipe out 50% of OLED motion blur. Supposedly the TINK4K adds 2ms of lag on it's own, it's 60hz BFI adds another 8ms, and you'll get a few more ms of latency from that HDR SDR brightness booster setting. So probably less than 15ms total that you'll be dealing with. Sure, QD-OLED + Tink4K has perfect blacks, higher brightness and progressive scan for retro gaming, but CRT still has zero lag & zero motion blur. ;) The problem is, finding something like a 27" Sony WEGA Trinitron CRT these days with low hours is becoming extremely difficult. These are 15 year old TV's. They won't look as bright as they once did, black levels will be lighter and the colours won't be quite as good either. A QD-OLED(Think Samsung S90D) + RetroTINK4K is the next best alternative. ;)
@@IIIISai I just rechecked my post, and holy crap that was frikkin long. That's what can happen when you're on a total caffeine kick. ;) Ramble ramble. But thanks for taking the time out of your day with a useless 'OK'. lol ;)
@@NeonPizza80s Funny enough I have both the RetroTINK4k and the 27" Sony WEGA Trinitron CRT you mentioned. Both are amazing, and I move my MiSTer between the two. For the TINK the LG OLED BFI does a good job of addressing motion blur, but the nits aren't high enough on my set, and increasing them too high on the TINK I seem to lose detail and the colors look off - which is not the TINKs fault it's the modern TV. It's worth noting that motion blur only bothers me in fast paced 2D games, so N64, PSX, GameCube and other 3D console I leave BFI off and it looks close to CRT quality to me. The CRT looks great, and I know it's not as good as it was new, but I honestly can't see any color or other issues, and I accept that nothing in the analog world is perfect. I have the TINK4k because it's awesome, and while I'll never part with my CRT for as long as I live, when modern TVs improve or my CRT dies I hope to get a comparable experience on modern TVs with the TINK.
@@NeonPizza80sI loved reading your ramble, ignore people who have nothing meaningful to contribute. I read that the pixelFX Morph 4K is basically a $275 alternative to the RetroTink 4K but for it's digital HDMI part. I'm on the fence of buying one and comparing it with my 19" JVC PVM. CHOICES......
Hell yeah man, nothing like being in the right place at the right time. I may have to get something like a pi3 or something similar set up on the little PVM for the basement.
One of my top #10 reasons for wanting to move out of my apartment and get a house is to have more room for CRTs. My 36" Trinitron is stored safely at my parents house but that thing is going to need a custom built crate for it without handles as I never want to carry it up/down stairs again without that. I do like it's flat screen for 3D gaming but for 3D/Sprite games I actually prefer my curved screens.
Yea I found a 32 inch Trinitron on the curb and I almost didn't take it as it sat there for a few days because it was so heavy, I needed to have help to lift it into my suv, and it took up the entire trunk space. A 36 inch I couldn't imagine lifting.
4:40 really like this one, Man I miss the old Crt my family used to have when I was a child, can't even remember the brand. I don't know why, I simply like Crt.
Great collection! I had the 13", 20", and 32" kv-##fs trinitrons. 32" had the matching stand. I kind of wish I kept them all but I only have the 13" now since I wanted to simplify my setup. I think the 20" was the sweet spot but the 13 fits in my office space better. Just have to sit close lol. But yeah, now I can't find them in my area at all. I started buying them in 2015. Paid $60 for the 13", $40 for the 20" and free for the 32" and it had a Sony 5 disc DVD player with it.
Very cool, personally I have 3 set up (woodgrain for my atari and intelevision, component input for 6th generation, and my childhood crt for everything else). The other 15 or so I have in storage, because as you said they aren't getting younger and once they're dead they're dead. I got most of mine for real cheap as well, most people were "free, just take it." Fun story, when my grandma-in-law moved into assisted living she had a component input 100 pound CRT in her basement. My mother-in-law was all frustrated that she'd have to pay someone to move it (because she didn't want anyone in her family getting hurt carrying it up the stairs) and then pay to dispose it. I turned it on and said "tube looks good and has the uncommon component inputs, put it on craigslist as 'free you just have to move it.'" She was skeptical that someone would want it but it was gone the next day. If it wasn't for "you are not getting another TV, you have enough already" I would have taken it.
Oh man, I am jealous that you have so many stocked away, that is awesome. I would love to get more, but they certainly take ip a ton of space. That’s nice you were able to save that CRT from going away, and helping out a fellow enthusiast at the same time. Too many being thrown away and recycled, always a sad thing to see!
@@JebberGamingJaws dare to dream. Before I got married they were all stacked up behind a false wall, after I got married they occupy half a storage locker, so yeah the space is definitely a concern.
If you play retro games you NEED this!! I have two CRT TV's myself... One of them weighed more than Hitlers bunker, but I got it in. Picture is amazing and sound likewise! Only way to play Sega Saturn and PSX.
Great collection man, thanks for sharing. I can't imagine the battle that took place getting that 36" Sony to where it is now haha. The crt I'm currently using is a sony kv-32fv15 from 1999. It has svideo, component and composite inputs, and weighs in at 176lb. Boy do I have a story about how it got in my basement, but it was totally worth the struggle!
I hear ya man! Not fun moving them, but so nice once they are in their place. Sounds like an excellent TV too, having Svideo and Component is def a must!
The warm glow you refer to is the natural incandescence CRTs have, from the phosphors and electron gun, plasmas have it to a certain degree too, the phosphors get excited a different way, but it's not too far from a CRT, nothing can replace that almost three-dimensional depth of the image though imo, unless we are talking the new 16K OLED light-field displays, but there is more to it than that with CRTs, it's the natural dynamic motion they have, the greyscale performance, the shadow-detail that makes games like Doom 3 or Resident Evil pop, I think when eQD is readily available, and an 8K or even 16K RetroTink to use with it, at that point, there may be a genuine option to replace the big screen CRTs with at least, replacing PVM/BVM/PCM CRTs will be a tall order though.
Very cool. About your "get them for free" comment. Good luck trying that today, at least where I live (Bay Area California). These kinds of CRTs almost never pop up for free and if they do they're gone in minutes. Word has been out for at least 2-3 years now that gamers want them, so people are typically asking $100 or more for them.
Yeah no kidding. I remember 10 years ago you couldn’t give these things away, I’d see them left in alleyways all the time. Now they’re sold as “retro gaming monitors” for pretty high prices. Same with old games themselves, it’s become a collectors market and the prices of everything have become nuts.
You have all my favorite games on. I still have my Trinitron from like 99 I think. And a flat screen Samsung plus some other small CRT. I had one of those HD widescreen CRTs; I find those kind to be impossibly heavy. It was really great playing GameCube and Wii in widescreen at the time on that thing; plus with a Dolby surround sound system. Yeah, baby! I'm glad I kept a few of my old TVs. The new HDs don't always look good with the old systems.
Man brings back memories i got that Sony 36 inch flat screen.....i use to play nes and Playstation 2 on it.....Sony was cool cuz there tvs back then in the 2000 would come as a package deal tv and sony stand...the picture on the tv was the best.....
Nice setup there, nothing beats the look of a CRT when it comes to retro gaming. And honestly, I even connected my Switch to one (standard, not some fancy 16:9 one) with a very cheap HMDI2AV adaptor. And lo and behold: It's awesome, at least I think so. Moreover, playing retro games on the Switch via the CRT feels even better. Good stuff all around! Hope these things will last some more decades - I keep my fingers crossed :)
This is an insane collection. I actually started getting back into crts when I found a Sony 34XS955. HD crts are perfect for ps360 era stuff as well as switch and movies/anime. The only downside is the INSANE weight. I never want to move mine again lol
Beautiful collection of big screen CRTs, I feel you on e the FD Trini being heavy AF, I have a 36" Panasonic SR Acuity, and it takes me and 3 of my neighbours to lift and move it, and I have to slip them a fiver each time lol, it's in the shed at the moment, so will need to call on them all again to get it into its final spot when I've got a heavy-duty stand for it.
I wish i had the Place for CRTs i have just Few and only 3 of 5 are Displayed. The Philips raffael Color 636 from 1976, and the SABA M4006 from 1992 and a non Wotking Philips 1956 TV in a cabinet. I never had the money for a PVM.. Thanl you for Sharing.
I was never huge on how NTSC CRTs are so square as opposed to the 3:2/16:10 PAL CRTs, but I really do miss those big old things. Modern TVs and monitors just don't hit the same. Like compared to ours, US models look more like a 1:1 than a 4:3. We still have ours from the late 90's, their longevity is always understated in favour of newer tech for some reason.
My Memorex just died (constantly power cycling), thinking about getting a Sony, Pansonic, or RCA. I have a backup Toshiba but it has a discolored spot on the screen, where degaussing it has failed. Edit: Ended up getting a JVC D-Series, similar to what you have but it's 32 inches. Love it! Best crt I ever bought.
That’s a nice collection there man! I’m rocking a 2004 hd 32” Sony wega trinitron crt.. a decent TV but I regret selling the hd 36” Toshiba crt I used to have that is impossible to find nowadays.. the reason I get the progressive scan models is because I actually don’t like scan lines and prefer to old school game with emulation running in 480p
Amazing collection, Jaws ! Amazing tv this Panasonic in 480p. I once owned a 14l5 but the tube died, now i am in a search for something capable of 480p lagless.
That guy that fixed that Panasonic Tau took it apart, did some cleaning, replaced some capacitors and tested it. Steve from Retro Tech has worked on a ton of CRTs: consumer, computer monitors, and PVMs/BVMs.
I have these TVs also I don’t play or watch on them anymore when I have better TVs like the 4K and 8K that costed $14,000 looks amazing with my PC gaming games in 8K nothing beats that
Well I like your enthusiasm for CRT's but I would never ever buy one today I had a 36" Phillips which I sold in 2003 so I could buy an LCD one. It weighed a ton (took two strong guys to move it out of my house) and took up so much space as had about 12 built in speakers. I now have a 65" 4K that sits on the wall. I couldn't imagine going back to a bulky CRT in the room with its tiny picture!
Wow man those big TVs look superb ! At some point i owned 7 CRTs but i had to reduced to just 2 because they were breaking my back and gave me an hernia. Nowadays i own a 24" Phillips a little Magnavox 14" and one Sony 32" Plasma. I still browse CL and FB market looking for a good deal so maybe i'm addicted to these monsters. LoL
dang i think the hd retrovision cable finally came out, didn't it? AND the Retrotink 4k was back in stock but that's $750, ooof. I found a 32 inch Sony Trinitron on the curb just a few weeks ago (along with an RCA truflat and a Toshiba CRT) and it was made in 2006, it is beautiful. The Trinitron is definitely beat up and has some dirt but it works great. I found all 3 of these during a small town Recycling event in Wisconsin while driving my school bus route, so I got super lucky. All 3 came from nice little neighborhoods where old people just didn't want them anymore, sadly. There were SO many CRT's that were being recycled and were in hauling away boxes at the local town hall, most of them were just RF or Composite only inpuits, the ones I got all have S-Video and Component, which is awesome. Now I just need the dang consoles again, I had everything prior to 2010 but sold everything before 'retro gaming collecting' got really big. I wish I had a PVM or BVM but it seems those are still very hard to find or they're expensive. The only thing I don't like about CRT's is the whine or noise they make, but I miss the look and glow that they have, it feels like they're alive compared to flat LCD's that are lifeless and too bright.
Sweet setup! I had a D Series but it had a billion hours on it and had issues. I got a 36XBR200 that is my go to 240p/480i content. Also have a 4:3 HDCRT Sony CRT that I can't recall the model number but I use it for 480P stuff and it looks GREAT. Gotta get a 16:9 one like you have though
I had quite an addiction (and still do) to Televisions in the mid to late 90’s through the early 00’s. Aside from the PVM’s I literally owned every TV in your room at one time or another (and several others 🤣) I’d love to get a singular 27” CRT For my game room, but I can never find one in good shape.
These tvs are impossible to carry because of the uneven weight distribution and shape. I carried a 27" Trinitron down the stairs without gloves and felt like my back was gonna break even though I think it's only 80lbs. With a 40" I think you would need 4 people and it's maybe 150lbs. If you carried a 36" by yourself you are a beast!
I have a 32 inch Sony Wega non hd but has component and s video. A 24 JVC musee i art flat screen that has component and s video. Then my childhood 19 Magnavox that is rf only. I love them.
I grew up with crt’s and gigantic projection tv’s! Around 2004 I was rewarded a brand spankin’ new black Sharp crt tv because my mom, step dad and I lived at our apartment for one whole year lol. It must’ve been a 20 incher. I played a lifetime of PS2 on that thing. We also had a silver/gray flat teen sony Trintron crt in our living room at that time. Unfortunately I threw the Sharp tv away when I was in my mid twenties ( what a moron). I have no clue what happened to that grey sony Trintron. I believe my step pops recycled it 😥 Fast forward to today and I have slowly been growing my cathode ray tube collection 📺 I have two 20” Sony Trinitrons, a 19” Trintron, a 13” Trintron, a tiny Panasonic w/built in vcr and a big ole 27” Trintron that’s currently in a repair shop. They’re all black with rounded tube screen. That’s my ideal crt. Not a fan of the silver/gray ones. Happy hunting y’all
All the current state of the art 4k oled monitors, all the new $2K GPUs cannot recreate the happiness of these games and monitors when you were a kid ..
I've been trying to find an old crt tv with hdmi and widescreen but everytime I find one they cost 5xs more than the retrotink 5x so I think I'm gonna get a retrotink 5x lol.
@@JebberGamingJaws I would hold off just a bit though. TakiUdon on RU-vid is coming out with a DE-10 Nano clone board for about half the price. That should cut down the cost quite a bit.
Awesome collection! Any recommendations on strong stands to hold these CRTs up? I’m definitely in need of new stands but am struggling to find something strong and nice looking.
Hi, I've just subscribed and I'd like to know if those CRT TVs are connected from RGB out from consoles and through a RGBS (or SCART) to Component (YPbPr) inputs. I'm wondering about this because here in the western hemisphere (both North and South America) TV maximum resolution support is through component inputs and TVs don't come with SCART inputs as in Europe. Great video and great content! 😉 I hope you're doing well, here I'm trying to cope with winter 🥶 in Chile 🇨🇱, South America (currently July 28th 2024)
Having CRT's to close to each other can be bad in the long term, especially if speakers are on the side like your wide-screen. The magnets in the speakers will over time start to stretch the picture of the screen sat next to it. While both screens are there you won't see the distortion, but 5-10 years from now and if one dies and is moved having been stood next to each other that long the image will slowly pull towards where the magnets were on the removed screen... Try to get 1/2 a meter gap between CRT's. Move the wide-screen slightly away more from the other screen, and think about moving the white, and smaller black one on top of the other screen.
Good info, thanks. I actually don’t usually have them as close as in the video, was just trying to have everything together and on for easy filming. I am glad to know this though, and will def try to spread my regular set up a little more than I generally have it. Thanks!
Wow, thats so cool! One question though, does your M series PVM only have RF? Mine does but i really want to use it for classic games its just collecting dust :(
I had a sony 36xbr800 I got from Craigslist NY a few years back for 40 bucks with remote ..manuals etc..them my power bill went up so I got rid of it in about 3 months...it didn't worth the extra money going into con edison.
So I want to know, what would the theoretical highest resolution be that a CRT could go up to if there was still innovation in the production of CRTs? They can indeed do 1080i and higher with decent refresh rates, but what could they get to and would they still be able to have high refresh rates, maybe even higher than CRTs normally are? And also I know the monitors had to be higher resolutions to display text nicely, but why didn't they make the TVs high definition when they clearly had the technology for it?
Hell yeah man, that is definitely a bit more reasonable than this madness 😆. I really do love it though, so it is worth it for me, but I can def see how it is not for everyone. Thanks for stopping by 🤙.
Big crt don’t necessarily look good compared to flat screens tv’s but there’s no denying retro games look and play best on them. We had a very good jvc crt with rgb input and my big brother gave it away free to his girlfriend. Pissed off till this day!
Guess what? I actually have the bigger version of that widescreen Sony TV. Not sure if I am going to keep it. My apartment is really small now so it's just collecting dust out side.
You have to find them outside on the curb. Drive around neighbourhoods and you'll see. A lot of that generation is dying off, older people in their 70s who have had them since the 90s and early 2000s and never moved on to flat screens. I got one a few months ago, 28 inch Trinetron, great shape from a clean house, probably old Italians or Greeks, non-smokers. I found a 32 inch Trinetron on the same street 2 months later in much worse condition from 1996 but the house it came out of was disgusting and I didn't want to deal with a mess so I left it and someone else picked it up. I also don't have the space for these things to be honest. Forget Ebay. Go outside and get one. But you need a car of course.
