Cruel Intentions Star Lauren Zakrin Performs Three Dream Roles Off Her Broadway Bucket List

After slaying audiences in Rock of Ages and Great Comet, Lauren Zakrin gives another knockout performance as the manipulative UES monster Kathryn Merteuil in the hit off-Broadway musical adaptation of Cruel Intentions. Lauren dropped by the BroadwayBox studio to perform 16 bars (or so) from the top three dream roles on her Broadway bucket list-and get ready because she is serving it all from legit soprano to Broadway belt. It's everything, and to see the rock star side of her huge voice singing all your favorite '90s tunes, get down to (le) Poisson Rouge before March 16.

@@maevab2923 The role of Elle Woods would technically be a mezzo-soprano. I think alanna p. was referring to the fact that they are used to hearing her sing with a belt rather then a classical soprano tone.

I've always thought that Laurent is great but It is SO crazy how far she has come since the search of the next Elle Woods, her voice is much more mature and stronger than ever. ( I loved when she played Elle in Sacramento in 2016, she truly killed it that time ).

She killed at Elle, I didn’t know she has this voice with all this range. Her voice reminds me of a Sierra bogess but her look has an edginess to it. Her character list has really opened after this. She can play so many roles and I want her too. Wow she impressed me. She’s came so far . I’m a fan

Her voice is amazing! And has matured wonderfully, I do miss the belt style of her voice though like it was back in 2007 (legally blonde mtv era though). But her soprano voice is fantastic too! With a great head voice, and you can tell she's been training her voice. Hopefully she continues to do broadway shows. And the Bonnie & Clyde song was great too, nice job Lauren

That head voice is do pretty!!! I think she has improved by leaps and bounds, even in the last few years. Great training. She still over-sings a little when she emotes in her high register, but I bet she will get over that very soon.

She has two interesting vocal tics. The vocalized “uh” of air when she cuts offa note, and her ooo vowel is more forward eeeew. Instead of rounded lipped youuuuu. I see her do it in her performance in “ hopelessly devoted to you”. Stunning voice. But strange habits?

Not a fan of her Clara. The light in the piazza should be sang by a sweet soprano, not being belted like that. If you want to see a good Clara go the the bucket list video of Carrie st. Louis. She’s really good and actually graduated in opera.

I agree. Not a fan of her Clara vocal choices. The voice doesn't necessarily have to be sweet, but it needs to sound vulnerable so that the audience has empathy for Clara's situation. And her Christine is also too raw sounding, the vowels too spread. Christine also has to make strong legit vowel color choices and the nasal has to be super reduced for that role. Her Elle and Bonnie are a good fit, definitely some superb singing in those roles.

She obviously has a lovely soprano but her technique is lacking and she still sounds like a pop singer. Also claras role should not be belted like that it should be softer and more beautiful sounding. Love her as Elle though!

Her voice is too harsh for these roles except for Bonnie. Although she has amazing acting skills, her voice is too forceful and strong for the loving and gentle parts.

Fortunately, there's plenty of powerful roles out there she could kick ass at. I like the idea of her doing Clara and Christine, different than the ones we know but that's what acting is.
