Is it possible to send a donation for this servers tip? I’m not talking about starting a “go fund me” or anything, but I would love to give the server a tip- if you could see that he gets it? Is that even allowed? Lol. How about this; I’ll send you guys $20, and you give the server $10?

I think it is appropriate to publically praise the staff and voice support. That is non- confrontational but clear, and models to others how to be positive in a negative situation.

As a former crew member (and officer) I can guarantee you there were reports filed and it's gone up to the Captain and Head of Security as well as Shoreside. There will be consequences even if you don't personally see them. What I would do as a guest is find the servers name if you don't already know it, write a glowing review as it really does make a huge difference on their pay, promotions, bonuses and other benefits. Also, at the end of the cruise give them a little extra and make sure they know why and how much you appreciate them. You can certainly find the F&B Manager and express your frustrations to them and see what they say but they will most likely say "It's been handled" and that's that. It could be as little as a reprimanding letter sent to the guests cabin or all the way to disembarked at the next port. Let us know what you hear and hope you continue to enjoy the rest of the cruise.

No one has the right to treat anyone with verbal abuse like that. 😕 Man needed to be removed from restaurant. Yes someone should of stood up and told the man he's behavior is unacceptable. Security should be notified as well in case he does it again.

OMG! I can't believe that this passenger was able to get away with this despicable behavior to a crew member and in front of other passengers trying to enjoy their meal & cruise! This type of behavior on a cruise ( or anywhere for that matter) should not be allowed. Security should have been called immediately by the management and this person should have been escorted out of the BLU dining room. Because nothing negative was done to him, he will continue exhibiting this type of deplorable behavior. A crew member should not have to deal with this type of behavior from a passenger! If everyone says nothing, then you are silently condoning this type of behavior. I would not suggest dealing with this passenger directly, but I would most definitely complain to the management of the cruise line. This is just my personal opinion on what I would have done if in the same situation.

This really hurts my heart for that crew member. I think going to the manager and voicing concern for the server might help. I would ask for that servers name and make sure to put in a good word for him/her on the cruise survey. Also have a special envelope for him/her at the end of the cruise.

I would talk to the food and beverage manager to just let them know you were appalled by this passengers behavior and hope the cruise line will not cater to it. I think for way too long people have been doing the “throw a temper tantrum and get what I want”. I think it is time for there to be consequences- otherwise it will only get worse over time. When you talk to the manager let him/her know that in no way do you want to make their job harder- you just want them aware so that they can protect the crew from this horrible man. BTW - I am “old” and age does not give one the right to be mean to people. I am super proud of the guy at the next table over that turned his back on the passenger. Honestly- that type response is the best possible.

I live in Texas, so you can imagine the few situations I have seen. As my kids have gotten older and have been with us in these situations it has changed my reaction. Younger me always wanted to rush in to stand up for anyone being picked on. Now, I tend to take a beat and see how staff react, but if the offending individual isn’t pretty quickly put in their place I can’t help but calmly walk over and let them know what’s up with quiet (albeit possibly slightly intimidating) words, lots of eye contact, and refusing to walk away until they apologize or leave. I don’t want to live in a world where people don’t stand up for each other.

I would have asked the maitre de to call security and ask that he be removed. He not only offended the server (severely) but also offended every single person in that restaurant by his outburst. How many of those diners walked away from there at the end of their meal satisfied that they had a great time? You guys do a great job and good luck on your journey to 30K!

I think there are cameras in all public areas of the ship including all the dining rooms. I'm sure that the higher-ups know what happened. I think the most important thing is to diffuse the situation and let security.handle.it.
@delightfullaw344

Totally agree, do not get involved, that's exactly what security is for. It might not be over, the man could still get backlash over his behavior. You have a good heart, but getting involved is not the wise thing to do. I like the idea of giving the server a tip at the end of the cruise, speaking to the manager of the server letting them know how well the server handled the situation, but someone who acts like that has issues, in my opinion. That's how I see this.

I feel bad for his wife. How embarrassing to have to continue to sit with him. I am happy to hear that the man at the next table turned his back to him. Actually pissed off at his wife or any other person in his party. I would never let anyone talk to a server that way no matter what. Best to let the crew and managers handle situations like that in the moment, but yes, you totally have the right to have discussions with them after the fact. I’d also like to add that as one of your elders (58 years old and from Elkhart btw), you do not owe them respect because of their age. My dad is 90 and has more class than this guy. Age is not an excuse for bad behavior in public.

If I were in that situation I would speak to the Maitre D, and then guest services to see what the appropriate chain of escalation is to make sure that person is not eating with my son at the same time for the rest of the cruise. If I wasn't with kids, I'd still speak to someone, the more people that mention it the more likely the guy will be held accountable for his actions in my opinion.

I feel so sorry for the hard working crew. As a public school principal of young children, I cannot count how many times I have been cursed at by parents. People like this could care less about who is around and are throwing an adult temper tantrum. The crew was just in survival mode, I’m sure, and trying to quiet the man and address his concerns. When things like this happen, it is so shocking that good people don’t know what to do. If I were you, if it happens again, I’d stand up and say let’s all acknowledge how hard the crew are working and what a wonderful job they’re doing. Start clapping. That way, you’re not confrontational with the a**hole, are supporting the staff, and hopefully putting him in his place. What do you think?

I had my mom live with me for 2 years with dementia. She went from a nice to hateful . You dont know what problems people have. If this old guy had been okay to this point then maybe he had been having a bad day. it might not happen again but it sounds like the staff are equipped to handle the situation and probably dont need passenger involvement. I have been on at least ten cruises and never saw someone behave like that. I also worked as a waitress years ago. Some people just feel entitled or perhaps as this was an older man he may have dementia. You were right not to intervene but perhaps visit customer service and tell them about the incident and how you feel. You could leave a note for the dining staff thanking them for their patience in the matter. I bet that waiter felt humiliated. What a disgrace.

So sorry to hear this, people can be so selfish, being so far from home and dealing with unthankful persons can lead to burnout very quickly, as a nurse I can totally empathize with this crew member. You should report it and let your crew member know that he shouldn't be treated that way. When my patients have spoken up for me or my fellow nurses, after such an outburst from an irate patient, it has really meant a lot to us.

Hi guys, love your videos! What this guy did to the crew member is definitely not cool. First thing that crossed my mind was maybe dementia or alzheimer's which does cause mood swings and behavioural issues. I worked in the service industry and there was once an instance where I was yelled at and called names by an elderly gentleman for no reason! It was like a Jykell and Hyde moment! Later on the man's wife came to apologize to me and let me know that her husband suffered from Alzheimer"s disease. It's a tough situation to know exactly what went on here. A mix-up about wine doesn't explain this over-the-top reaction. Unfortunately, there are going to be people who feel so badly about themselves, the only way they can lift themselves up is to abuse others. You mention the offending passenger was elderly. As a silver-haired cruiser myself, I suspect there may be some kind of dementia or other cognitive difficulty going on with him. That's the most charitable view I can take of this incident. That said, I'd make sure the hotel/restaurant officer knows the crew members were not at fault. Emphasize the way they responded with tact and attention so no one loses their job over this horrible moment. In fact, when I hear someone complaining about a crew member to a supervisor, if I've had experience with that crewmember, I make it a point to share my positive take on their work.

I don't know for sure what I would do in this situation, but, I think that the crew should not have had to put up with someone like this and he should have been asked to leave the restaurant and banned from cruising with that line in the future, There is absolutely no excuse for what the man did. I have been on 35 cruises and occasionally I have been brought the wrong wine, it's no big deal, you just say that you had asked for "xyz" wine and they will go back ang get it. For what you can do for the rest of your 9 days, I would suggest going to Guest Relations or the Staff Captain and telling them that you want to be able to go to the Blu restaurant every night, but, you feel very uncomfortable that this guy may do this again and ruin your evening as well as others, You can then ask them to ban him from the restaurant for the remainder of the cruise.

I’m sure others have expressed the same. As mentioned giving a complement on how the crewmember that was being screamed that handled the situation as well as the rest of the crew. I understand your concern regarding confronting this man, it may have escalated and then you all may have been put ashore. It's a hard call to make. In regard to the staffing, that is on the cruise lines in my opinion. I understand that they are struggling to get fully staffed, but if they know that, then the right thing to do for us, their customers, is to not book a ship to capacity. Book only as many guests as you can comfortably handle and provide and excellent experience.

NO ONE should be spoken to like that, especially under their working circumstances. I would contact the head of BLU and ask what was done and that you will get up and leave if it happens again. In fact, this man should have been asked to leave!!! Try to contact the crew member (spoken or note) and just give him some kind words. And it's so important to respect the one who do show up! They are hard workers and do their best to help. Also, people need to understand that screaming or yelling at someone is never an option. It never help to get better services or anything. But then, just like we are seeing online (with comments), sadly some people seems to forget that respect and open dialogue is always the key! This seems to be a theme no matter the location and it’s so disheartening. We live in a tourist driven area and my husband and I both work second jobs at a locally owned restaurant. I had an older gentleman yell at me this evening and told me to “save it” as I explained to him it would be a 10 minute (10 MINUTE) wait before I could seat him and his wife as we were short staffed. Age be damned. We love cruising and we have always loved every crew member we have had the pleasure of meeting. I am so thankful for each and every one of them and for everything they do to make sure we have a wonderful vacation. I was also taught to respect my elders but I do believe there comes a point when age is just an excuse for bad behavior. I hope the crew member gets hundreds of rave reviews!

I would try to find out who that crew member was and show appreciation to him for all his hard work and patience with people like that. AND, I would ask other people who may have been in the dining room that evening (yourselves included) to mention him by name to his superiors on board or even by a letter to RCC so that his employer will recognize how hard he works and the patience he exhibits. At the very least, he will gain some encouragement and drive to want to continue to be the best he can be at his job, regardless of embarrassing and insulting that experience was. Poor fellow.

We were once on a cruise where a pax was berating rather loudly a waiter in the buffet for no good reason. We and several other folks walked up to them and said nothing but it diffused the situation. Afterwards we gave the waiter our name and told her that if the pax complained to give her boss our name and we would explain the waiter did nothing wrong. That made her very relieved. And then just tp make sure we told the first officer we saw what had happened.

No excuse here for that sort of behavior but being that it was an elderly person fits of rage are quite common with dementia. They get worse in the late afternoon and early evening. It's hard to confront someone in this case as it only makes their agitation worse and they'd probably continue to take it out on the servers. I had a family member with dementia and 10 minutes later they wouldn't remember what they had said and/or were angry about. As a caregiver I learned how to calm her and also apologize if she offended someone else. It's a very complex situation for sure 😥

Me personally, when I’ve seen “Karen’s”, act like assholes & I have, although I’m shy, I say something because I know the staff can’t say what they want to, and almost apologize for a strangers lack of human decency & treating people well and to be kind & patient. I heard they have cruise ship “jail”. I think he owes the staff person an apology & a warning. We never know what causes people to erupt. It’s a 24 day cruise; I personally would give him a chance to show he’s not an ahole after apologizing but only if it’s a true apology. You mentioned older gentlemen. Any chance it was an outburst of dimentia? I guess I try to see too much good in people. I just want all mankind to treat each other well. :)

I'm following Jim and Ian's live blog on Cruise Critic. Someone mentioned you guys talking about the incident. My wife and I will be on Reflection in 2 weeks, our first time in a suite. We've always sailed in AQ and ate in Blu exclusively. My wife just retired from a large law enforcement agency, she might have went over to try and diffuse the situation.

I have to agree with the observation that ships might be going back to full capacity too quickly. My last cruise (early June) was a good example. What normally takes about 30 minutes for embarkation turned into two hours, then we had to stand in another line for half an hour to get something to eat, and these long waits continued throughout the cruise. Luckily, many of the cruisers were first timers so they didn't know that this was an unusual situation, although quite a few said that would be their first and last cruise.

This incident is so beyond unacceptable!!! My last cruise in May I was waiting for the bartender to fill a large order. The interaction between the customer and bartender seemed very pleasant. Once the customer was back with the group , drinks in hand, a woman from this group yells out a phrase with a purposeful 1960’s Asian stereotypical accent. As I turned to look in their direction she then yells out she just had to do it! The bartender, Filipino, didn’t even have a strong accent, they just went with his looks. I have to admit over the years I’d say something but as you referenced, I’d have to be on the ship with them for 6 more days and didn’t want any escalation of tensions. Instead I offered my support and empathy to the bartender who amazingly took it in stride. In your case, I believe approaching the Maitre’d discreetly and asking him to be banned would be appropriate. I worked public facing airline positions at the airport snd the F bomb was my threshold. 2 cops and a nice K-9 German Shepherd showed up and “surprised” them for a little chat. After I consulted the crew, they were not boarded as a security/safety issue could escalate in the air. I treat the staff like they’re the customer. I address as sir/ma’am, please, thank you etc. I’m interested in hearing how the rest of the cruise goes and if he shows up again.

I rarely comment on videos but I must on this one. First off you two are amazing I love your videos I’m new to your channel and have been enjoying it so much. My advise to you would be first to find that crew member if you can and give him positive feedback, so he will not take it to much to heart, then I would find his manager and give him positive feedback on this crew member. If this man has any class at all he will and should apologize to the crew member but after hearing about his actions I don’t think he has any class at all. Keep up the good work guys. Happy sailing

I would stand up, go directly to that particular crew member, and let them know they're appreciated for all the hard work they do, right in front of that SHAMEFUL act by this cruiser. There is absolutely no need to even acknowledge that this person exists.

I believe that you sure give respect to get respect. My heart go out to the crew. They work so hard. I was on the Royal Caribbean eating at chops. I saw a crewmember working on 10 table and I saw how hard he was working so I felt compelled to at least give him a $20 tip because he deserved it and it was very appreciate it have fun they’re on. I always look at the crew with consideration and compassion. Americans will not work as hard and long hours like these people do so we have to take a consideration for a lot of strains of stress and as we consider them is treated with respect they will give us the proper service we deserve thank you for this information JJ crew. See you in January. God bless you

Besides the crew, the people I really feel bad for are the people sailing with him (wife, kids, etc.). If he blows his top over something as trivial as a bottle of wine, I can only imagine how he treats his family. I would have walked right up to the server, gave him a crisp $20 bill, and told him he didn't deserve that kind of treatment. I would do this right in front of the jerk, not even acknowledging him.

I would not talk to the yelling old man. You do not need a confrontation that could get you boys in trouble with the ship. I would tell the management how polite and professional the crew member was even when being attacked (fill out one of the cards for crew doing well and on your post cruise survey) . I'd also go and talk to the server the next night and tell him he handled things well, maybe tip him even though he is not your server.

Ugh. Over wine? How privileged is he?! I love that the man seated next to him turned his chair! Great move! As someone not involved in the conversation, I don’t feel it would be my place to intervene in the moment. I don’t find anything wrong with speaking with a manager after the fact and voicing my concerns. I’m also someone who would find the person who was yelled at and wish him well and let him know that he didn’t deserve any of that, and that as a fellow passenger, I found that yelling man’s reaction to be absolutely unacceptable. As someone formerly in the service industry (not a cruise), sometimes it’s nice to hear kind words and a reminder that the real person at fault is the one doing the yelling.

I’m hearing a lot of things like that. It’s not just on cruise ships. There is something seriously wrong with all the anger issues. It’s really scary. I’ve had someone yell at me like that to the point that I thought they would hurt me. The only excuse I could have for that man is if he is suffering from Alzheimers. I don’t know what your definition of elderly is, so it’s hard to know. A lot of young people call people in their sixties elderly. I think of elderly as someone who is at least 80, or maybe someone in their mid to late 70s who is feeble.

The older we get, the farther off elderly seems to be. I get you though. I'm picturing someone in their 70s or older, but they could be in their 50s and these kids think that is old. I know when I was a teen 30 seemed ancient. Now I'm thinking 80 seems old. lol

That older man probably has dementia. I grew up in a retirement community and worked at a country club that was filled with older people just like this. We put up with that all the time. It's unfortunate, but one has to be tolerant and forgiving. The old man could also have had a few to many drinks before he even came into the restaurant. The lesson I learned at an early age was how not to behave when you get older. Older people who don't behave like this are truly precious people that are deserving of our respect.

Let it go. It's not your job to police other passengers behavior. Besides, you don't want to confront and potentially start an altercation that could lead to some serious consequences. Mgmt, on the other hand, should have escorted them out of BLU and delivered a letter to his stateroom banning him from that dining venue for duration of the cruise. If he's gonna act like a child treat him like a child.

If I had just sat down, would have got up, told him politely he had no right to scream, swear and ruin everyone’s dinner. He is in public, disrespecting all the other paying passengers in the room, there are children present. I would have then left the restaurant and eaten elsewhere. The cruise line was wrong! The staff should have told him to leave. That is unacceptable behavior. Please speak up! Thank you both! Love your videos!

I agree the man behaved abominably!! It is unacceptable for anyone to be treated that way. My heart hurts for the cruise staff that had to deal with this man. You mentioned the man was older. There are neurological disorders that can exacerbate and negatively impact temperaments. This man should be limited from interacting with others until he can control himself better.

J & J, another great video. Totally unacceptable behavior. I agree that the shock was there for everyone and it was an OMG moment for most of the diners. Mistakes happen in life and if you can't control your emotions to a simple mistake with a hardworking crew member (especially in these trying times), maybe you should be staying home. That is abuse of the staff and shouldn't be tolerated. Regardless of age, that would have been off at the next port. This person was looking for buy-in by explaining his actions to the closest table. I applaud the gentleman next to him for turning his back. I am not sure how I would have re-acted but I would hope I would have told him he was out of line and owed that young man an apology as well as an apology to the other crew members and fellow diners. It is one thing if there was a legitimate gripe but It is another thing if a mistake occurs and the team bends over backwards to make your vacation memorable. J & J, I have been on 25 cruises and I have yet to have a bad cruise. Why? I know I am going to have a good time before I go. This guy looks for a problem before he leaves and found it while having dinner. BTW, subscribed and liked 🙃

Do not engage! Let the crew do what they do best in diffusing the situation. I would definitely get the server's name and send KUDOS. I would first tell the customer service desk that I felt the crew member acted outstandingly under duress. Then I would make it my business to reiterate how well he handled himself when it came time for the cruise survey and also leave him a special tip with a note to let him know you care.

I am one of your “elders”. I am in my 70’s. I think you should do what you did. Let the staff handle it in this case. If you aren’t in the dining room, in a public area you might try saying something but know it probably won’t help much. I personally would walk up to him and ask “ is there something I can help you with”? If the person has decreased cognition that may be helpful. It if you start with a critical statement I can promise it will probably escalate the situation. Truthfully there is no right answer. But it is very hard to stand by and do nothing. I’m sorry you and everyone else had to witness this it is upsetting. ❤

I do think you should speak up. If only so they know how this situation made not only the waiter feel but also other passengers as well. I think they need to know the crew members did handle the situation in the most professional way. And how uncomfortable and unacceptable this persons behavior was to EVERYONE. And because you have 9 more nights on board that it is a privilege to dine in certain restaurants not a right. I would suggest that they un-invite him to that dining room (blu) because he not only offended the crew but the other passengers find this behavior unacceptable. I think people need to speak up to not only back the crew because it’s the right thing to do but because this behavior should not be tolerated. Period. Thanks for sharing. And my heart goes out to the server. Very upsetting.

I would find and tip the drink server generously , explain that it was clear that he’d been mistreated, but that you were thankful for his restraint in not escalating the situation further. If the passenger does anything else, it might be a good thing to ask to speak to the head server, explain that you feel unsafe as a passenger cruising with this person- it may be the tipping point to have him removed if enough guests respectfully complain, strength in numbers etc.
