CRUISE SHIP HITS DOCK, MULTIPLE PEOPLE INJURED GETTING OFF TOUR BOAT, CRUISE NEWS 

Hi, Don, we were on the Queen Victoria when she hit the dock in Valletta. A lady and her husband were standing in the stern, she said to her husband, ‘We aren’t going to stop ‘ ‘ Of course we are, they know what they are doing’ he said rather scornfully, they have, ‘------- as he said that she hit the dock! You could see that there had been some damage just above the water line where the plates were buckled. We had to stay over night for a thorough inspection, they filled the damage with concrete until we got to where a proper repair was done! No one was hurt but it did cause a bit of a jolt! There was of course a Pilot on board, but they said the throttle stuck, so who knows ! It caused a bit of excitement. A short time later we stayed in Valletta at the Phoenicia Hotel and we mentioned this, and the young man we were speaking to said ruefully ‘That’s my Uncle’s dock’!

Same problem here in BVI. SOMETIMES THEY DIVIDE THEM INTO GROUPS OF TWENTY. BUT OUR ROADS ARE NARROW.

Hi Don I live in Scottish Highlands mainland. Yes the roads are narrow especially single track and cyclists are extremely frustrating. Often there’s few places to overtake and big bunches of them drive us nuts! Small groups single file please

Party boat equals alcohol cruise. Given the neighborhood and clientele these boats attract, it is not your typical cruise disembarkation. I'm from NY and there has been tons of details in our local NYC newspapers

We stopped at Lerwick, Shetland on our Regal Princess cruise. It was a Sunday, but all the shops opened especially for the passengers. Everyone was very nice and happy to have us there. It is beautiful island and a lovely town.

What’s with ships hitting docks, and barge ships breaking lose and last cargo ships hitting bridges? 😢

Having the anchors cleared away ready for use is standard operating procedure when entering or leaving port on any ship. The reason? It’s the ships last resort in the event of a propulsion failure which leaves them unable to stop.

Don, you just got off of Keto... when on a cruise, in some ways, going to the buffet can give lots of choices for people on Keto.

We have the same problem in Toronto with running groups. Huge groups all trying to run at the same time.

Im guessing the roads in Shetland are similar to our ones in Cornwall. These can be one car wide with high hedges with few straight lines in many places. It can be very frustrating when any type of road user blocks others. Sometimes it can't be helped (farm vehicles for example) but it sounds like they could and should do something to improve the situation in Shetland.

As much as I hate to see councils put restrictions on cruise ships, I do think restricting the number of bikes in a group to less than a dozen would be more manageable.

I’ve seen someone get hit by a car while they was riding their bike. It was not pretty. The car was right in front of me and the bicycle turned right in front of them. I kinda freak every time I see someone riding a bike now.

My Aunt Sylvia had the same problem parking her Cadillac in the garage, oftentimes going through the back wall into the kitchen. My Uncle Saul finally fixed the problem by bubble wrapping her front bumper . . . just saying.

Regarding bikes, it makes sense to only allow single file cycling, to go side by side is dangerous and selfish, as bike riders are untracable they seem to do whatever they like , Not just from cruise ships, many cyclist ignore traffic lights and ride very dangerously as well.. Perhaps they should be banned from areas such as this for the benefit of local people who need to get on with their day? I'm not from Shetland but can see it's a problem, we need to keep the locals happy before cruise ships are banned from there altogether. Some European ports don't like cruisers as it is!

We had bike tours in that area but I think the groups were smaller than 20 in a group. I’d think if you are pedaling faster than others you might get bunched up! I wouldn’t know because everyone would outpedal me! In Sin Martin our crew was not allowed a shore day because of how many people were there, there had to be at least 50 bikes off one ship. Yes, this was at the end of COVID but masks were still being used. On one Caribbean cruise there was a motorcycle group. The leader had arranged with each island for the group to tour the island. Very well organized and repeated every year!

Too many accidents for cruisers. Too many people going overboard. Are cruise lines so busy growing their fleets that their staff is unprepared to handle to handle their ships?

Thats what i thought a pilot takes the ship in to port..

The captain is not responsible for docking the ship at port. It’s the port’s pilot who actually docks the ship

I don't know about the Shetland Islands, but in the US bicycles have the same rights to the roads as anyone else. I know its frustrating to be stuck behind a slow group, but it doesn't make sense to endanger anyone's life to get ahead. It would be smarter to reduce the size of the groups.

Don, the problem with the cyclist is not going to stop. I live at the beach in Southern California and occasionally these yahoos will take over part of Pacific Coast Highway because they don’t wanna stay within the bike lane and they want to block wind and whatever from each other I don’t know what the hell they’re doing, but it’s totally flipping annoying. They have no regard for cars. I had a group try to pull out in front of me when they did not have the right away and I just kept moving and they had to stop short. Cruise ports need to handle this and let them know these big groups of bicycles are not allowed. nobody is used to this and it may not end well!

Don, the cycling video shows all the cyclists on the right hand side of the road which would be disastrous in the Shetland Islands as they drive on the left there. No wonder the local residents are worried.
